I am growing my own runner beans this year and planted them in the garden this morning.I know the slugs are going to be on there way but has anyone got any tips on how to stop them?I have a dog so i cant put pellets down.Someone said i should try putting sand around them which i have but was wandering if there is anything else i could do other than stand down there with a gun :P .

You can get pet/children friendly pellets. They are like broken shells or pebbles and work a treat. There is a trick with a shallow pot and beer, not sure how it works but I guess the slugs/snails are drawn to the smell of the beer. You can also get slug rings which you put around the base of the plant, that might be an expensive way of doing it though.

A few options for you......

Here, here and here.

The best tip I heard for this and it works 100% is to do the beer trap, slugs are heavilt attracted to the smell of Hops in beer,if you put a few beers traps around where the plants are, they can't help but to go and have a butchers and they end up drowning in beer.Sounds a bit like Merlin at a weekend....

I've wondered that aswell, Lager, Ale, Bitter? and are they fussy or would Tesco value do the trick?

If the slugs are brave enough to try and drink the tesco value stuff they are braver than me :P

Well i havent resorted to beer yet for the slugs but have had 5 stellas myself and its only 6 o'clock. If i find a guy on the floor next to my runners in the morning i will know it is Merlin :P .So far so good tho but i was a bit worried earlier because the sun was hot and they started to droop but they have picked up a bit now.I will keep an eye on them and i have about another 25 potted in my room waiting to spout.I know that this sounds sad but it is prity satisfying growing something that you can eat :) .Now wheres Penelope Keith? :P

whenever i catch a snail i lob it onto my roof :P slugs just get splattered!
