Foam for DIY battery tray.

Hey guys.

I'm probably being utterly useless and losing my mind but here goes...

I'm after some blocks or thick sheets of foam for making and securing batteries in a 1/5th model.

Until now, I've always had some laying around

Searching on the 'Bay is seemily quite difficult and I'm hoping someone already has one bookmarked or similar.

The stuff I'm coming across so far is nothing like what I'm after.

The kinda foam I'm after is the one on the left, it looks like Neoprene foam, but it's not.

Send help please. ^_^

I've got lots.... but there all cylinders about 1,5" diameter and 3" long.  Come from our local play and recycling centre for work.  They prob have sheets / blocks too but the cylinders suited our need.  If your not in a hurry i'll be visiting again, but probably not till the middle / end of the Summer hols as our membership has lapsed and whilst good value it's not cheap enough to pay for a years access that includes the summer when we don't need it.

Probably not the size you're after and maybe a little too expensive but I've used Hpi foam blocks in some 1/10 cars.

These are very dense, almost solid.

Thats the exact stuff I'm after (Remembering back to my Firestorm times)... But in a much larger scale! :D

Try "closed cell neoprene"

From what I've had in the past with my drones, Neoprene foam is far too soft, and has a memory effect.

Try polyethylene foam as well

This is also one I'm avoiding, far too soft and has a horrible feel about it. Also melts very easily, so hard to use a glue gun on it.

Failing all that, I've mocked something up to try and 3D print in TPU.... Just need to get my printer fixed first as it wont get above 205c -_-

Oasis deteriorates when wet - it's also not very robust.  We use loads of it during spring at preschool - mainly as we needed a little bit for a project but massively over ordered!

Im making a DIY battery tray too. But for traxxas 1/10 i think ive figured it out now with this lot.

Ill glue 4 thumb nuts into the chassis. Shoo goo ans decent footprint to hold to. Plus i can prise them off if needed. With m4x35 grub screws mayb x25mm actually. Then tube spacer then the lipo tray slips on and 4x top thumb nuts fitted to lock it all down. Then just use the lipo straps.

Im hopful it will work lol.

I'm stupid.!!!!!!!!!!!!

I might have something for this application  Lying all over the garden.

Called shock pads that go under artificial grass to make a cushion floor.

Have a bit that's 25mm thick and a bit that's 35mm thick give or take. I over ordered.

Might be worth a try.

That's some good stuff!

Definately worth noting...

I ended up printing this out

IMG_20180520_124625

It fit on first attempt, and did what I wanted. Printed in TPU, with 10% infill, it worked pretty well, and had a nice amount of squish.

However, I totally underestimated how much space I had to play with in the model once it was all together, and can't use it, or any other foam in the area, as I need the space to wiggle the batteries in and out....

Shorty Baja flux. :rc_car:

Just for reference the foam you were after is called plastazote, we use various thickness on car dash boards etc when we retrim them.
