Ford Escort mk1 diorama project

Nick

Recommended Posts

My Dad retires soon and I wanted to make a diorama of his old Ford Escort Mk1 rally car back in the day. Sadly he doesn't have it anymore, he sold it for £50... hind sight is great!

Does anyone know more about this car, such as what version it is or anything, to help me find a diecast/model version? Any help on finding a toy version would be great! I can respray it if needed and plan to get number sticker/numberplate done.

Not sure about the wheels and arches though.

L and L models make an RC body of the MK1 Escort Mexico, but if you want an easier smaller version, Scalextric have made a few MK1 Escorts over the years, the original ones change hands for very little money.

It's not a Mexico, but I think it had these on to look like one as you said, I think it was a 1.6l. Though checking recent tax (which it hasn't been for a while!) it is now white with a 2l! So someone has had fun with it.

I've found a good replica Mexico on eBay, 1:43 diecast so will get that and start playing about with paint. Even has same wheels! So they must of been the standard ones.

Found something at ebay Germany.

Even the wheel arches seem to be matching.

1:18 scale.

Edit: 5 hours left. And he only sends it to Germany. If you are really interested I would need to help with the shipping.

Does anyone know what the 2x beige things are on the front of my Dads car? Near the number plate. Looks like he's wrapped something up in a cloth.

Mounts for a "light bar"?

You know, those four round rally lights? Best guess.

These i mean. The colour makes me think they're definitely "aftermarket" or "homebrew", they appear to usually mount with two metal brackets and a load of screws, might be some homebrew "quickchange" system?

edit: the position of them beige things is definitely in the same position as the "standard mounts:

I bought this one, it's 1:46 scale, not sure really how big that is but it has the exact same arches and even wheels!

So just need to try painting it all and decalling it up.

Looks cool.

But is 1 wiper missing?

Unless it is the "race track" version. They used to take 1 wiper to improve aerodynamics.

I owned an Escort MK1 in my twenties for about 6 months.

I never forget that the steering wheel was not in line with the seats. It was tilting a bit to the left. Very strange.

Thats like driving a pre 996 Porsche 911. It feels like the pedals are in the centre and the steering wheel on the right.

A similarly depressing story to Nicks Dad’s £50 Mexico Sale. My Dad sold his 964 (the one from the film Bad Boys, but red) for probably 20% of what they go for now 😞

Without a doubt Cibie brackets wrapped in foam or something. Absolute shin killers if you walked into one without it on.

In case you did want something bigger. Triple 9 also do a 1/18 scale model that is cheaper than the Minichamps one. It's a good model but does not have opening doors or bonnet. But it does have the big wings you are after.

Aha! You are right, I'm a wiper short. I might of got 2 coming though, so some transplanting can be done. 🙂

That's spot on but wrong wheels, I think I've been lucky finding a model with the same ones, as I doubt they'll be easily transferable between models.

Have you got any close ups of the wheels? I can't seem to figure out what they are. They look like they have four sets of two spokes? Kind of like RS wheels but a bit wider.
