Update on Garry's progress today.

Today has again been a day of ups and downs, just that there have a few more downs.
When we got there they were again slowly reducing the level of sedation and his B/P was again reacting as it has done before, going up at it's highest it was 180/78. we noticed that his breathing was 'laboured' uneven with noticeable movement of he shoulders and chest.

His Oxygen levels were good but he looked uncomfortable.
They stopped the sedation but this only resulted in him trying to move his right hand up to his face as if to try and move the tubes from his mouth and nose and he started to become restless and both mum and dad had to keep taking hold of his hand to try and encourage him to settle.

It was decided that the level of sedation needed to be increased again a) to help reduce his B/P again and B) to reduce the restless movements of his hand.
Following a short break for coffee and a bite to eat we returned with Luke who had arrived to visit. we went back to the ward, the level of sedation was still being increased and but Garry was still restlessly trying to put his right hand up to his face, Garry's B/P had come back down to the 150/70 range.

His nurse, for the day Vicky told us the that Doctor wanted to speak to us which caused us to worry. he took to us to an interview room and explained that he needed to consult with us regarding the current situation with Garry having the ventilator tube through his mouth and down his throat was posing an increased risk of the possibility of a chest infection as well as the fact that when sedation was being lifted Garry seemed to want to pull it out.

The medical opinion is that it may be in Garry's best interests for him to have a tracheotomy (tube placed through his throat) through which the ventilator can be attached. He explained the risks which are always present with any surgical procedure, we seem to keep being given these, but also explained the reasons which include the fact that it would help with the reducing of the level sedation as he would not want to get rid of feel of having something in his mouth. It will reduce the risk of chest infections Although we as his parents can not give consent to it being done or even object to it the medical staff are trying to keep us informed of what they are doing and why. It is not 100% certain that they will do it but we feel it is pretty sure that they will.

Advantages will be that they will be able to start to look at what medications will be effective in lowering his B/P as the drugs being used to sedate him also have a strong effect in lower B/P's with there being more chance of Garry being more awake will also help to see what affects the stroke has had on him.
So today feels like a one step forward, two steps back day.

Thank you everyone for your kind posts and prayers for Garry. <3.

Another update from his family, keep at it Garry!

Today we knew that Garry would be having the tracheotomy but we were not sure at what time.

When dad phoned the hospital this morning he was told that Garry was comfortable and that the procedure would be done later in the day and that the unit would ring after it was over.

At 3:20 this afternoon the unit rang to say that they had started the procedure on the ICU but that Garry had started to bleed and they had quickly transferred him to the operating theater under the care of Ear, Nose and Throat surgeons. They were asked to ring once he came back to the unit......This was one of the risks the consultant had spoken to us about on Wednesday. The waiting was going to be hard.

Dad managed to get off work earlier than planned, Sarah was setting out from home and it turned out Luke was also on his way to the QMC we all arrived within 20 minutes of each other and it turned out that Garry had only just come out of theater.

Garry remains on the ventilator and under sedation, they plan to start reducing that tomorrow.

The consultant spoke to myself, dad and Sarah about today's events and explained what had happened and also why the Tracheotomy had been delayed for 24 hours. he explained that he wanted to see the level of restlessness Garry was showing to make sure that it really was needed, the family understand his reasons and are grateful for his openness. He explained that he does not know what effects the stroke has had on Garry, this is the first time this has been mentioned, he also said that it could be a few months before this is known but he felt that Garry had a 'Strong Team' behind him, he reminded us that we had to make sure that we looked after ourselves...
And told Sarah there were no empty beds.

Garry's B/P was 115/55, they have carried out a chest Xray and are keeping a check on his blood to make sure he hasn't lost too much,
Garry looks more comfortable now that all the tubes are away from his mouth, he remains on various drips.

Hopefully tomorrow we will be able to report even more progress.

Sarah has already given her update and we are please to report that she has eaten well once we arrived home.( just a short while before our meeting poor Sarah fainted at Garry's beside, she is perfectly well now ) <3 .

As with every update on Garry's progress,
We thank everyone for their kind comments and prayers. xx

Update on Garry's progress today...

Garry seems to have had a busy day.....This morning when we rang to see how he had been over night he was getting a daily brush up,

His nurse, called Lovely, said that he had had a comfortable night and that the plan was to keep his sedation going for today to allow him to rest.

We visited this afternoon and we arrived on the unit the doctor was in the process of moving his IV lines as they had now been in place for 7 days and should be re-sited.

Nurse also said that his temperature was a little raised. We were asked to wait outside the unit until the doctor had finished.

We managed to get to see him 2 hours later and he did look comfortable, he had good colour and Dad looked at his chart, he saw that during the night his B/P had been as low 100/55 but it was currently running at 150/60, most of his IV lines were on his left arm with one in the left side of his neck. he was fast asleep (deep sedation), After about 10 minutes they wanted to do an X-Ray so we had to step away from the bed, good distance for safety's sake... we then went back by his bed but were again asked to move while they moved some of the equipment (monitors and the like) around, at this point we felt that it would be better to let them get on, even though we had only been able to sit with Garry for about 15 minutes by his bedside out of the 5 hours the visit took......
Hopefully they will be starting to wake him up tomorrow.....Hopefully!.

Again, many thanks for your prayers and lovely comments <3.

Keep fighting Garry...............

Sunday's Update...
We telephone the ICU at 11:30am to find out how Garry had been over night,
we were pleased to hear that he had, had a comfortable night and that they had just stopped his sedation to start to wake him up........
We were looking forward to seeing him and hopefully him being able to communicate with us by hand squeezes, He is not able to to talk due to the tracheotomy. But sadly yet again his blood pressure had
gone up to 200/130, he had started to become restless, trying to pull his naso-gastric tube out and he had started to run a temperature of 42c so they had to start the sedation again, he had a
cooling blanket on and his temp was down to 38.6c and his B/P was back down to 124/55.

His Nurse for today Claire said that when she had started to wake him up he must have had an itch as he started to scratch himself with his right hand, which she felt was a good sign, she said that
he has been started on antibiotics for a possible chest infection and samples have been sent of to try and find out which one would be most effective.

While we were sitting with him he started to curl his top lip, we started to chuckle as it looked like he was trying to do an Elvis impersonation. Sarah and Mum said that he was fluttering his eye lashes.

We got a shock at one point as it seemed that he was suddenly trying to sit up and move his hand to his face but it was just that he was trying to cough and Claire had to use suction to clear his lungs,
at this dad had hold of his hand and it seemed like he tried to squeeze his thumb as he responded to reassurance and settled back down, his B/P went up to 180/90 but soon settled back down to the 120/50's.
On the whole we feel it was a good day with some positive signs and are hoping that the infection can be quickly brought under control, hopefully they will try to reduce/stop sedation again tomorrow.

We want to thank everyone of you, who make lovely comments to Garry and to those of you that say a little prayer for him and us, Thank you all <3.

4/10/16 Tuesday Update...

When we arrived for today's visit the physiotherapist had just finished a passive session of exercises with him and Garry was now sleeping. His B/P was 160/76 which was fairly good, his level of sedation was very low, his nurse (we didn't catch her name) describing it as 'given he's a big fellow, it's the same as someone having a cup of tea to help them relax'.
We asked about the kidney scan and were told that Garry had been seen by the Renal specialist who wanted a 24 hour urine collection doing and that at the present time the scan was not needed as it seems his kidney functioning is improving so the scan is now on hold.

The ventilator is now only supporting his breathing as he is now mostly breathing for himself.
His naso-gastric feed has increased to 105mls per hour.
Garry's right hand was holding the bed-rail until we took hold of it, we talked to him asking him to squeeze our hand but we got no response.
The nurse switched the sedation off all together and we waited for Garry to become more awake but after half an hour or so, we decided to take a break and have a drink.
When we returned Garry was again holding the bed-rail with his right hand and looked comfortable, we again tried to get him to squeeze our hand but he still wasn't playing........
His nurse told us that while we had been away the doctor had been to see him and that Garry had been communicating with hand squeezes (One for Yes and Two for No) the Doctor had asked him if he had pain, Garry squeezed once, when asked where the pain was he moved his right hand to indicate his head....
He has had some of the staples taken out of his operation site wound, which is healing well. His hair is starting to grow back to cover it.
Garry started to have a coughing bout, he took his hand from dad's hand and grabbed hold of the bed-rail, the nurse used suction to to clear the fluid from his lungs and he began to settle and we again took hold of his hand, we asked him to squeeze our hand to let us know that he knew we were there, he did, Dad asked him to squeeze it again and he did, he then squeezed mums hand and kept hold of it.......
The nurse said that she wanted to change his ventilator tubes so we decided that we would leave, mum told Garry we were going, he squeezed her hand and he kept hold of it, she told him that Sarah would there soon and he squeezed her hand again, we left feeling that progress, although slow, was being made.

Today feels like a two steps forward and none back............
Thank you everyone for your kind posts and prayers for Garry. <3.

We have had another up date from Garry's brother Luke who visited after Sarah left this evening...  "I visited this evening and Garry woke up. I had a different method of communication... I had thumb wiggles... left and right for "no", up and down for "yes"
First question.... "do you feel like crap"...... seemed a very strong yes answer for that one!.... "

I don't know Garry but wish him all the best in his recovery, and for his family / friends to stay strong.

I have first hand experience of a stroke affecting a loved one. It's a long hard battle and at times it won't be easy. A truly horrible experience which I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Great news garry is using the thumb wiggles and he is more able to comunicate with his loved ones , we are all rooting here for you garry so keep strong big man.

some news on the BTCC racing standings ol buddy.

sheddons upfront with 308 points and you have  tordoff trailing in second with 306.
Mat neal is in sixth place holding with 275 points and plato sits in seventh with 256.

poor arron smith is in 16th with a very low 132 point gain.

Gordon sheddon held on to win the BTCC buddy at brands hatch , that 2 point lead was just enough to hold on to the win.

Well chap you keep on fighting and we will keep you updated on motorsport news if you like , when you feel a lot better maybe you will watch the race on youtube it was action packed to,
