Finally got the snorkel!

Makes ALL the difference!

 

Also, got the metal servo mount and larger, 8mm hexes fitted. But they pale in comparison to the mighty snorkel. :P

Right up to the height of the snorkel-intake, of course!

 

It doesn't matter if your truck has all-waterproof electronics... without a snorkel, it can't go in water!

Fitted a few more upgrades to the Komodo, yesterday. My plan was to upload the photos and type all this afterwards... but, then I found whisky.

 

Anyhoo, here we are! The first upgrade was to fit the Gmade 1904 tyres, to replace the 1903s that come with the Komodo Double Cab. The 1904s are standard on the BOM and are quite a lot taller and wider. I really like the 1903s and have found them to be superb tyres, but they just weren't quite tall enough for the front bumper to clear. Plus, they simply looked a little too small.

Also fitted the Junfac Carbon Steel driveshafts. These are lovely! Even if my phone camera REALLY isn't!!

Stainless steel steering links replace the standard aluminium ones. Nice, easy bit of extra weight, low-down and far-forward. Always good!

Metal motor plate. Hoped to get a better spur/pinion mesh. The plastic one has a tiny bit of movement, so hoped the metal one would remove that. It does.

 

Still, I had to use the 14 holes, for my 13t pinion, because the standard mesh is too tight. The new plate also comes with a new cover.

Today, these brass 8mm wheel hexes arrived. I have the Gmade alloy 8mm hexes fitted, already. I had hoped to add just a wee bit of weight. Not too much, though, as I don't believe in adding a lot of rotational mass.

 

However, they fitted perfect on the rear, but completely locked-up the front. When tightened, they were simply jammed up against the knuckles. Possibly, they would work with the standard Gmade knuckles and just not my SSD ones. Nevertheless, I couldn't use them.

 

So, I'm still running the Gmade hexes, all-round. I might try the brass hexes on the HPI Venture, depending on what the stance looks like. I don't really want the Venture to have as wide as stance as the Komodo.

Also be careful using hexes like those, especially with large heavy tyres, they have no rear collar which is designed to seat against the bearing and take pressure off the pins.

Without that, when you tighten your wheels, all that force it pushing directly into the drive pin, thus making them snap easily.

Might not always be a problem for everyone, but something to consider.

What ecu being used? What bec voltage / amps you putting to the servos, From the video it seems to work but just be slow like its not getting enough power.
Might be worth looking at a high voltage servo one that can do 7.4 - 8v, that way you can volt up rather than having to buy another servo? Just ensure the ecu can do the volts and amps or invest in a BEC.

Yeah, it just seemed to struggle on my Komodo. Same with the Venture, but I've upped the BEC voltage and it seems a bit better.

Running a Hobbywing 1080. I was running 6v and i was reluctant to try 7.4v, as I didn't want to overstress a servo that was already struggling...

buuuut then I thought "screw it" and upped the voltage to 7.4, anyway! Seems better in the HPI Venture, although I already removed another of the same servo from my Komodo.

 

What you don't see in the video, are my frequent efforts to input steering, from the transmitter. Whenever there was load on the wheels, the servo was just not responding.

 

Anyway, I'll run both trucks with 7.4v bec and see how they fare. Certainly, the 25kg DS Servo has WAAAAY more power, than the 21.8kg Etronix.

I like them. The 1903s were good, so I had high hopes for these. I've only run them once, so need to do more, to give a thorough test. However, if they are simply "1903s, but bigger", I would be happy enough. Although, I have the suspicion that they'll be slightly better again, because of the more ahgressive pattern and deeper lugs.
