OHOs OG SCX10 gets rebuilt, '46 power wagon!

Recommended Posts

I thought I would start a fresh thread for this, the old one is messy, with weird posts and lots of photos/information missing, since I have decided to give the truck a good rebuild, I thought a fresh thread was in order too.

I'll include a few photos of the original truck and a few random shots that were on the old thread but this will mostly be progress from now on.

So, below are some photos from how it started out life and some progress shots of it over time.

And how it's sat right now, I have put some SSD D60 axle housings on her, with fresh Axial HD gears and Overdrive in the front, first time trying that so it hopefully improves things.

New chassis rails, new skid, rebuilt transmission with Axial HD gears.

Vanquish stage one, SSD links all round.

I am also doing a new body for it, while it's only lexan, I still want to do a good job of it, so it's a work in progress.

Hope you like so far.

Yup she is my old faithful :D

Thought she deserved a treat, although she's now a bit like Triggers broom, seeing as the body, chassis, skid and a few other bits have been removed, not much of the original actually remains, perhaps just the axle shafts now, everything else is upgraded or removed.

Switched over to 32dp gearing, 58t spur, 10t pinion, should be good for low control on 3s.

SSD driveshafts, SSD shocks fitted.

I need to find another chassis brace or two, just bodged this (neatly) for now, but they are plastic, I want all alloy for the chassis to make it as rigid as possible, currently searching eBay for those.

This is how she sits right now.

Decided instead of trying to find a shorter top shaft, to just cut it down, works well for body clearance, it now has a good cm or so of clearance, before it was about 2mm.

Very happy with the progress on this and overall happy with how the chassis layout looks.

Moved the CoG way down, the battery is lower and closer to the front now, the ESC is evening out the weight distribution, the RX box and ESC are also now much lower, the wires are neatened up, everything is now well below the tops of the shock towers.

Hopefully everything stays put, now to finally decide on a body colour and figure out a mounting system.

Making a little more progress, some days off work and rain has meant I have some free time.

This is the first time I've made anything like this and it's still early stages, but the bed overall will be quite minimalistic, so be kind lol.

Not sure if I will do any actual sides on the bed or maybe just a small bead around the edge.

Just the initial tabs.

Basic layout.

48511952482_10e618d8fb_b.jpg

To my surprise I actually got these lined up both sides perfectly first time, not often my measurements are 100% lol.

You'll also notice the cab actually slides into the bed, originally I was going to have a tilting bed, but it's really no use tilting anyway so this way made much more sense and solved my problem of 'locking' the cab at a certain height, with some Velcro on the front, I think that should work best for quick battery changes and such.

I could just bolt the cab to the bed now, but I don't want to have to take out all these bolts from the bed either, so overall I think this way works well.

I am also still undecided on colour, I did think I was going blue for the cab, so I ordered some blue beadlock rings and blue scale locking hubs, but like a fool I now think I just want it red, I already have lots of red to hand and although it won't be a 100% match, it will at least blend with the Vanquish stage one kit.

Might still put the blue bits on though, just to see how it all blends together.

Well some more progress :D

Rad fully finished, 'hoses' routed, not the most creative routing, but quite realistic and made the most sense for keeping bed space free.

Little overview, very happy with it for my first attempt.

Yellow lenses definitely needed!

48560899806_c3b700588a_b.jpg

Always helps to outline what you're cutting out from the outside and use a lightbox, my paint jobs would be even worse without those.

48561039422_772f248072_b.jpg

This tool from SSD is so neat!

48561039167_d8599db4e6_b.jpg

New beadlock rings and scale hubs on.

48561039092_79c364a577_b.jpg

Some colour on the body, I am so glad I did indeed decide with the red/blue theme, it would have been too much blue.

Overview shots, definitely making progress, let me know what you think so far? :)

I've not seen many red Power Wagon. It looks great. Any plans for a rear cage of some sort?

Thanks Neil, yeah I wasn't sure on colour, especially since my shocks have blue on and I'd already ordered the blue beadlock rings and scale hubs, to in my mind it works lol.

And I do and don't, I know someone who will do it, he does superb work, but I just don't know if I want to add weight, once I am finished up adding more bits and pieces to the bed, it also might look a bit cluttered with a cage.

I do however fancy getting some cage work without the bed and then I could potentially run it both ways depending on my mood, basically the bed removes in 4 bolts, so if I did get a cage made I could just switch and change.

Not 100% set yet.

This looks like its built to perform! Really like the look of it, and as always, excellent photography skills.

Thanks very much :D yep, built to perform, but also look semi-decent :P that being said, the first roll will probably rip the bed off lol, so I think I will go fairly easy on it.

Fairly small update, custom rear bumper is on and looks great in my opinion, exactly what I wanted.

I've now dropped the body a bit too, it hides the esc/battery trays better.

I also went a bit brave and chopped the fenders/steps off a bit too, felt like doing this from the day I opened the bodyshell package but finally done it, I was going to go fully chopped, but then decided I'd like some lights, so needs must and some of them has to stay.

But now it's looking more like a proper rock truck, I am questioning the use of the plate on the rear, would it really be road registered... Nope, so might remove that and put a nice lightbar across the rear instead.

Small update, nothing too spectacular, fitted a nicer bumper, but I am having trouble finding one I actually like, they either sit too far forwards, like the one above, or like the one below, they are a tad on the small side.

Suppose the best option is to buy the Wertymade Power wagon specific bumper, with that being said, I have already damaged the bed and body in a roll over, so I am seriously considering buying a Pro-line Hilux SR5 body for this now, to keep the weight down and lower as possible.

And maybe put this on a spare chassis and just have it as a shelf queen... Or maybe sell it, I am undecided.

Anyway for now, here's a few pictures from the last run out, I am going to be uploading some footage very soon, just been busy with work and no time to edit.

@CarlC  - thanks very much :)

Some photos from a recent trail and crawl at a new location, I have found my body is getting caught on a lot of stuff and my bed has taken some quite severe damage, mostly to where the body sits in the slots of the bed.

My options moving forward are to get a new body (looking at the SR5 Hilux) to save this one from being totally destroyed... Drive the truck more gently, which kinda goes against setting up such a well performing chassis in the first place or just remove the 'bed' as it is and have a very basic set up just to hide some stuff, I'm still undecided on what to do.

Myself, my Dad, my nephew and brother-in-law, really good day was had, hope you enjoy the pictures.

My SSD front bumper is well scratched up now!

So I kept damaging the mounts sadly and the bottom of the body, plus it bounced around a bit and I desperately don't want to add body posts and clips.

So I've now added the proper bed to the truck.

Chopped the arches to suit.

Inner fenders still to be added.

Going to add a few scale items to the bed I think.

Interior is also now in, with a driver coming soon, more exterior details to come too.

I can now swap between the full bed and my custom bed relatively easily.

She is also now named.
