The brief; - Using my own LCG design Scaler chassis but run a narrower skid and chassis to clear for steering and general weight loss. - 4 link suspension with a 13.5/14” wheelbase. - Capra Portal axles ( possibly a straight front in the future but portals for now). Fronts had HR Brass knuckles on already. - Overdriven front axle ( Had TGH Wild 36% gears in already) - Servo on axle. - 2.2 wheels and tyres - spurred by some 2.2 Proline Hyraxs I was sent in error 🤗. these will have Crawler Innovations dual stage foams in.. - DIG function. - Body hood must sit below top of wheels. - To be Sorrca C3 compliant but emphasis on handling to compromise scale.... Got it!?? 😂 So there were other ideas also but those are the essentials... Enough talking right!?... So I started with my own rails and skid... This was something Carl and I worked on last year with a view to a business which sadly never got off the ground for various reasons... That said, I am looking to revive some of this business... I was pretty sure that this rail design would not be suitable for the Capra portals at the height I wanted to run it ( these were designed for C2 rigs and can run scx/trx portals with some playing and straight axles super low). I built up the rails then looked for the axles!!! Where are ya!?? Muhuhahahahahahahaaaaa There we go!!! I then swapped some links about and had a play..... Which gave me this! 1 Hyrax mocked up with other 2.2s on and an old bug body.... And with the body compressed the front wheels looked perfect 👍😎 The only issue as I suspected was that the chassis design though frankly brilliant 🤓😂was not correct for this application!! The end rails sat too low for the ride height I wanted and it could also do with some higher upper link positions.... Hmmmmm..... So in true development fashion I grabbed a set of my old prototype rails with an idea to move forward!! That’s betterer!!! 😂 This would now give me something to work forward with until I get a redesign done and cut.... Oh yeah!!! Also took the springs out of the temporary shocks for now so I could see the lowest setting... Yeah yeah I know, more pics and shut up!?? Flex!! And then Stimpy throws you a hardbody Tamiya flashback! Granted you need a bit of imagination for this one but I reckon it could look great and score me them hardbody points in C3 and still perform brilliantly! Obviously all needs a load of cutting right!!?? Next I messed about a bit more and moved on to the driveline and servos .... I had to redrill the skid so the tranny could sit at a slight angle to allow full access to required link holes... This was also partly as I was running this chassis a good few mm narrower than normal.... Had to make a CF micro servo holder for the dig unit and used an old Hitec unit I’d had in stock for aeons.... At the front I used a Holmes Hobby direct feed unit - love em!!! For those of you that have not seen a DIG unit before, they are used to disconnect or lock the rear driveline. This is particularly useful for sucking the chassis down (with the right spring set up) before a climb or off camber move. They can also help with tightening up the steering and dragging the rear for more grip on decents... The overdriven front I have will also be keeping the axles/chassis permanently stretched / lower. This set up does require more of a throttle for breakovers but nothing that isn't worth it! Next I looked at the sparks... Made a quick “development” battery and sparks tray up! Then got soldering... I’d had a Holmes 1400kv snubnose revolver and a Castle sidewinder micro in stock for a while so thought I’d use them as they’re nice and light and plenty powerful!! Can you see the motor in there!??? 🤗 I didn’t have any ‘regular’ 2.2 beadlocks in stock so ordered some Chanquish units up to test with! They actually came from a U.K. based company ( Noah’s RC Ark) who has stock here and arrived next day much to my surprise!! zzzzzzzzz 😴😴😴 Always soooo dull making up beadlocks!!!.... After what seemed a lifetime!It now sat like this: Some of you will notice the dig servo missing..... Bloody thing smoked itself! To be fair I was running it on my Spektrum system and couldn’t set the end points up properly... 🤬💩🤬💩 Did change it over to my comp Sanwa system after this and ordered up another servo.... Luckily they are cheap as chips!!! 🙈😂👍 Oh, and built up some Traxxas big bore shocks with Losi Mini T springs..... Though I have run out of the ones I feel I need for the rear..... 🤷♂️ Now I’m sure you are all dying to know how it looks now with a body on flexing!!!?? But sadly I forgot to take a pic! 🙈💩 But will do so in a while and update!! And..... So how did it drive!???.... Well... You know me, always room for improvement! But it was certainly amusing and pretty capable! That said I’ve only tried it round the garage but will get it out and about shortly when I get a mo.... What I would say is that I think I may want an 1800/2050kv motor instead, it just lacks a bit of punch for my driving style but I will try a larger pinion first. I also need to change servo horns to something a wee bit longer as I’m losing my full steering capacity - besides all that it needs tuning - and most probably some higher upper rear link mounts..... Body sitting a bit high here tbh.. All that clearance!! Not a massive fan of the wheels currently but they certainly do for now! Might end up spraying parts of the wheel to match body colours in the end 🤷♂️😂 And the pumpkin! Again, sat high at the moment. Will end up trimmed into the rear shock towers.... I bought that Pumpkin body aeons ago but it just didn't work on anything I tried it on - was basically too small. However, on this monster of a truck it really does seem to work! Or in my eyes (and yours) at very least....👍 Only issue is that I will need to trim a considerable amount of it to offer the performance I want... Yeah, as the front of my bonnet essentially sits near the C/L of the wheels I'm hoping I can get away with a bit less than that and leave a bit of the fender shapes in... Luckily the Capra axles are quite wide and what with a decent amount of caster dialled in .... Well....
