XT90 or XT60 ??

Cool thanks, now my next question is what brand? I got some off amazon and the image showed they had Ammas stamped on them but the ones I received were unbranded... are they all the same?

I never had a connector melt, you just need to solder them correctly. More importantly, you need a third/helping hand to solder them correctly. 

 

The collapse issue only appears if you clamp the connector on the pins rather than the housing. And even that can be avoided by just pushing a male and female connector halfway into each other. That's not to say that EC5 isn't a good connector, they are - but XT90s are as easy to solder (and easier if you have to splice a light kit wire in, learned that yesterday). 

 

As a general rule of thumb: bigger is always better, in terms of connectors. There's no downside to using "too big" a connector, there's hazards if you're using one that's too small.
