Help with pinion gear for brushless upgrade? (FTX Bugsta)

Hi guys,

I appeared to have hit a bit of a brick wall after a ton of reading and research across this forum and others.

So, I'm an absolute RC freshman and I've had an FTX bugsta for about a month or so now.

I've been researching my first upgrade; upgrading the motor to brushless. I've decided on a Hobbywing Max10 4000kv or 3300kv combo with 60A ESC.

However, I've heard that this motor has a 5mm shaft and here's where I come totally and utterly unstuck!

It appears that the stock pinion gear will not fit (17T) because I believe the old motor runs a narrower shaft.

So, how would I go about sourcing a plug and play pinion gear that will support the new 5mm shaft and tie in nicely with the stock spur.

There's like a million different pinion specs and it's mind blowing!

For additional info, I'm wanting to use 2s lipo and I'd like to avoid fiddling with gearing for now to keep the upgrade simple.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction to selecting the correct replacement pinion gear? It's been an absolute ball ache for me as I'm clueless..

Thanks in advance!

think the 5mm shafts are M1 matey but wait forers post etc your right though pinion sizes are a nightmare usually measured by M-=mod ie Mod 1 ,mod 2 mod 3 etc

also they come in 32p 48p and 64p the p meaning pitch  ie 32-pitch and 0.8Mod are the same see if gets more complicated haha 🤣

Hey dude,

From looking at modelsport, i think this is the spur gear you're running on your Bugsta. https://www.modelsport.co.uk/ftx-65t-spur-gear-vantage-carnage-banzai-hooligan-bugsta/rc-car-products/365809

The distributor suggests that this is a 0.6 mod spur.

The only place i can find 5mm shaft 0.6 mod pinions is hobbyking, but feel free to second guess me :D It's an odd combo!

As an aside, that brushless combo you mentioned, is it this one? https://www.modelsport.co.uk/hobbywing-ezrun-combo-max10-3652sl-4000kv-brushless-motor/rc-car-products/420923

I think that's got a smaller shaft, it's the SCT motors that tend to have 5mm shafts (or 1/8th gear).

Cheers!

Holy crap! [emoji23]

It's embarrassing how long I've been looking for 5mm bore pinion gear to pair with the stock spur gear. Like hen's teeth!

Thanks so much both for clearing that one up!

So I can simply swap the pinion gear over to the new shaft. Boom!

That is indeed the motor I'm looking for (but I'm swaying towards the 3300kv due to better acceleration albeit a lower top speed.)

Since posting, I've actually watched a couple YouTube vids of swapping out the spur on this model and it doesn't appear as daunting as I'd initially thought.

I started to go down this route as I thought what I was looking for simply didn't exist.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a reinforced 48DP hardened steel pinion and Acetal spur combo once I've made mincemeat of the stock spur, keeping as close to stock gearing as I can for now.

It does appear that the stock pinion gear is 0.6m

Super helpful both of you. Thanks!

The Max 10 you want for the FTX is the same shaft as the standard FTX motor.

I have the Max10 3300kv. It’s fast enough for a FTX. The 4000kv will be faster top end and accelerating but you can gear down. The 3300kv can be geared up better so it’s swings and roundabouts.

If it was me I would chose based on where I would use it. On road go 4000kv. Off road go 3300kv.
