HobbyWing joins the push for brushless tech in the world of scale RC, after a recent drive by some companies also releasing a brushless crawler/rock racer, HobbyWing enters the foray with this.....

Hobbywing have introduced the XeRun AXE Brushless System. The FOC (Field-oriented Control) is the name of this new tech, and is something all new to the scale trail, rock racing,and rc world in-general. This new style of sensor allows extremely accurate control and sensing of the motor while maintaining extreme performance and reliability. The motor and ESC are able to match the RPM of the motor to your throttle position under all driving conditions. This greatly improves down hill driving giving this system the ability to drive down hill under complete control.
FOC technology also makes the whole system extremly silent, the motor doesn’t create the annoying PWM noise when it is running.

 

The new FOC sensors, combined with Intelligent Torque output and closed loop speed control mean the ESC and motor will maintain the motor’s Torque level and RPM as the vehicles conditions change. Uphill, down hill, under load, you name it, your Axe system will do what you’re telling it to do.

 

The new Axe motor not only has a new sensor design, but compared to other rock crawler design motors uses an improved staggered pole rotor design.

 

What does this mean?

Smoother operation with no cogging, and very clean and consistent deceleration. Smoother brakes, smoother power, and transitions between each are improved. This is specific to trail and rock crawling and allows extremely precise throttle control under any load conditions.

The IP-67 waterproof has been taken to a new level with the AXE System. Completely sealed ESC design with robust heatsink case design ensure the ESC is ready for anything you throw at it. The motor as well, is sealed, and combines a completely new sensor harness. No messy extra steps to make your system water proof.

 

Extremely efficient design comes from the combination of new methods. The FOC sensors provided significant improvements to overall motor performance when compared to standard brushless setups. Runtime is increased dramatically while maintaining exceptional levels of power and response.

 

Drag brake rate, and drag brake tuning allows scalers to adjust not only the hill/hold/drag brake, but how quickly the brake applies. This allows high speed driving without sudden jerks or stops when releasing the throttle. The drag brake itself is super charged, and able to be run at extremely high levels. Compared to a standard crawling brushless setup, the drag brake in the Axe System can be rated at 200% in comparison.

If this finally allows fixed RPM driving, including descends then this could be awesome.  3S support and a decent spec BEC too.

I had a read through earlier today hoping for input from John Holmes and wasn't disappointed.  Thread descended into cell count and scale speed arguments after a bit; no surprise!  ESC / Motor combo looks promising.  Modelsport have it listed for ~£120 for ESC which isn't too bad.. but the motor is the same.  A combo is ~£200

Hmm, I’ve held of replying as yet.

specs look great but it does mean your tied to that esc/limited motor options with that sensor lead, and I know Bluetooth is the way forward and all that but a program card compatibility would be nice.

 

never say never though, other than those little points, could well be a winner, at the right price of course....

It's a much better solution than those damn sensor wires and the archaic port from the 70s. Standards are cool and everything but they need up dating. I hope HW did not patent this but put it on a public license. That way it can actually take off.

If they have designed it I wouldn't blame them if they did. I mean if others patent waterproof boxes and cantilever suspension you can hardly blame them for patenting something they actually design.

You can patent but make it available to all and sundry. The connector is not that much different from existing types used in other applications though.
