Losi 5ive Rally car project(s)

I like the idea of the solid windscreens, but will be interested in your experiences of engine temps with the semi enclosed shell.

I guess high temp will be less of an issue with BL motors, but am concerned about potential overheating on cars fitted with IC motors.

What is the thickness of the (assumed polycarbonate) shell?

I appreciate that you probably won't be able to tell until the protective film is removed, but any evidence of moisture bubbles in the material? or similar thermo moulding defects.

I've seen some alloy wheels listed for Losi on some obscure website in the past, easier (but costly) to get them anodised in gold.

I'll see if I can find the link.

Great idea but I want the car to be a proper Basher, not a shelfer, so I don't think the anodised alloy wheels is a way I want to go mate...

Its a 2mm lexan shell.  The chap making them is the first to admit that they aren't perfect, but TBH, when properly liveried and going sideways with full opposite lock on a RallyX surface, I don't care.

engine temps, I will see how I get on.  I may remove part of the windscreen, or install 1/5th Touring Car holes to aid ventilation.  Not sure yet.  Need to cut out the side for access to kill/stop button and pull start.

I don't think temps will be a problem personally as they're actively cooled and running the shell won't stop the fly wheel from sucking in air :)

my concern is that the ambient temp will be too high under the shell.  Doesn't matter how much airflow you have from the fan if it's like an ever increasing temp under there.  Effectively it will just be a fan assisted oven... :)

Hi Carpmart,

I'm from Melbourne Australia, and 100% interested in your rally shells. When can I buy one of these? I'd be keen to buy with the complete conversion kit.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Chap..

I'm not actually selling these.  Nige at Freeprawn racing will be.  These are some early shells which I'm getting fitted/painted.  Keep an eye on the Freeprawn web site for conversion kits and shell stock...

I will keep posting on here so you can see my progress.

If this awesome shell needs venting stuff cutting holes in it. Ado for some nice vents to nr 3d printed and mount them on. Mayb channels for the inside to carry the air to the hot parts.

The scooby should be simple with bonnet scoop, roof scoops and mayb some rear window side vents. The shell is big enough to pull it off.

3d printer users are everywhere now too very competitive prices.

They look awesome I think the scooby is my favourite tho proportions should look better too. Hatch backs always look puffed up to get the wheelbase right.

If these shells are a success Surley the maker will think about making a mk2 escort that is the golden ticket especially in the European market. Even ken block has a nice mk2 escort but he can't drive it lol. Which is why it's fairly unknown. He pulled another driver in to shoot the escort gymkhana video.  It's on youtube and pretty good.  Much better than the 4x4 mustang tat.

Chop chop....

They are being painted.

Wheels in gold is the gate at present... Anyone want to print me some please?

Although i dont think a printed wheel will be strong enough, if someone wants to work on it with me i could give it a bash. There is gold filament available in PLA.

Only issue is, i dont have a 5ive, i dont have any 5ive wheels to base a design from and ive never had a 5th scale in my life

I was also thinking about doing a rallycross theme. Something similar to this except it'll be a fiesta instead of a 6r4.

Mate...  Sounds like a plan then.... :)

Ive got a wheel or three I can send you up.  The pale gold looks about right colour wise for the wheels.  What makes you think they won't be strong enough?  Too brittle?

The other idea i had was a beadlock bolt on printed cover in gold.  We could then use an existing wheel, but print off covers for the wheels to change the look and colour, kind of like a hub cap... Do you think this could work if printing complete wheels is a non starter?

PM me you address and let me know your PayPal and I will send you the wheels and pay for the gold printer material.

Harvey, hubcap idea sounds like an idea that should be tried before a wheel, tis a proper good idea!

I have filament (although not in the right colour) which im more than willing to use to make sure the idea is a go-er before getting the other stuff

I'll PM you my address and if you could send a wheel up it would be grand, would also let me measure it up and print a prototype too. No rush though as i have my Final uni exams in a week so i'm  a bit pre-occupied with them, after that though im all hobbies! (and a little bit of work)

Cheers Craig...

Uni first bud, get that done!  Then your karting, then when you've nabbed a little time, my wheels would be great.  I will get it in the post tomorrow mate...

I think the hub cap beadlocks are the answer...

Thanks mate, couple of cracking links there....  I'm thinking anodising the alloy, but they appear to be part plastic, so not sure....  Still think printed wheels, in the right material and or beadlock hub caps will be best....
