Dunno, will have to get a cameraman

Got two possible drivers;

Either 'Marcus' from Terminator Salvation, approx 9 1/2" tall

or Peter Parker 10 1/2"

Leaning towards the Marcus figure but his head doesn't pivot down (nod) so he looks like he's got a stiff neck

Had to do a fair bit of surgery on both figures, Marcus's hip joints allowed his legs to pivot about 15 degrees, so there was no way he was sitting down without modification

Both of them had butt and thigh surgery too

How durable is the final paint finish?

Defo figure 1, the second one looks too big and cartoony, imo

No idea how the paint will fare but that's why it's silver on the inside; any scratches will show silver where the green paint's gone so it'll hopefully gain a bit of 'character'

fantastic job andy, looks perfect!!!

excellent build thread too

Cheers Fella

Thanks, it's been great doing it.

Last post for today, an explanation of the discrete body mounts

First off, the body was masked on the inside where the body-post dimples were molded
sbkvelcr00.jpg

sbkvelcr01.jpg

Then, I had to drill a body-clip hole into 4 caps that Rich (Biggus_Ditchus) had got made for me
They did look fantastic when they arrived, but the 6mm thru hole I thought I measured right shoulda been 1/4" (6.35mm)
Not having a suitable bit, I had to chase 'em through with a masonry bit and a wood bit, so they looked a bit rough by the end of it all (sorry Rich)
sbkvelcr02.jpg

With the cap mounted on the post, the top of the post is cut flush with the cap - hogged off with side-cutters then tidied up with a stanley knife
sbkvelcr03.jpg

The cap forms a 'platform' for 3M SL3540 (think seriously heavy-duty velcro)
It's made of interlocking mushroom shapes protrusions
There's only one 'side' to this, not a hook and a loop side like regular velcro
There's 3540 and 3550 - the difference is the glue on the back I believe - 3540 glue is slightly weaker, but it's adequate for this task
3540 description; Pressure sensitive rubber adhesive
3550 description; Pressure sensitive very high bond acrylic adhesive
sbkvelcr04.jpg

4 more pads inside the shell, sticking to bare, unpainted lexan - the glue's strong enough to take paint off, so a bare surface is critical
sbkvelcr05.jpg

In situ - stack height is around 5.8mm if the foam pads aren't pressed down on (the shell's not heavy enough to do that)
sbkvelcr06.jpg

sbkvelcr07.jpg

And this is how strong it is
Weight of truck is just under 2.1kg (4 5/8 lb)
sbkvelcr08.jpg

Cheers again to Rich for getting 'em made so quick, sorry they're not so pretty now!

Excellent job.

Any 'characters' lined up to permanently drive it?

Al.

Not yet - the choice I had were a bit of a rush to get it running for yesterday as I was taking it to Radshape for a play

  • 2 weeks later...

Found a cheap radio to work with the 3Racing winch - http://www.modelsport.co.uk/carson-reflex-pro-2-lcd-3ch-2.4ghz-fhss-combo/rc-car-products/368278

A lot of 3ch only have a 2 position 3rd, for changing gear on nitros or engaging reverse etc.

This one has a 3 position slide-switch in front of the steering wheel making it perfect for a winch

Branded as Carson, it's called a Reflex Wheel Pro 2 LCD (catchy eh?)
Not sure how you're supposed to realise it's a 3 channel set from that, but there ya go.

It's got end point adjustment on all three channels, so 3rd could also be used for a dig box on a crawler.
Also has;

  • Reverse on all 3 channels
  • ABS on Throttle*
  • Steering and Throttle expo*
  • Steering and Throttle dual-rate*
  • 15 model memory with 3 character model name
  • Stupid looking brake disc and caliper inside steering wheel
  • Charging socket - transmitter runs off 4 AA batteries (not included)
  • France switch - must be set to F if used in France*
  • Throttle rate adjuster switch for nitro (minimizes 'brake' travel on trigger)
  • Blue backlight on LCD screen

(* no idea what they do so don't ask)

As well as Carson's own, the transmitter's also compatible with the Maverick MRX - 242 2.4 GHz 3Ch Receiver

At 35 x 26x 14 the supplied receiver seemed pretty big, but I've mainly had Spektrum gear in the past and their receivers are tiny

First off though, here's the winch :)

And now the radio

The all-important 3rd channel switch

Other stuff it may or may not need
wncrh04.jpg

wncrh05.jpg

wncrh06.jpg

wncrh07.jpg

Definitely needs these
wncrh08.jpg

Probably needs this

Needs one, dunno about the other
