My Tamiya Egress Black Edition Build

Hello, Ive always admired Tamiya, but more the touring cars. They were just so detailed compared to everything else as a kid! I didnt really have much interest in their off road stuff or the  "legendaries" like the Lunchbox, Grasshopper etc.

 

Recently, Ive started buying  all the 90s touring cars, but truth be told I was getting a bit bored of them all being very similar. Next on my hit list was the Calsonic R34 GTR, in fact there is a NIB on eBay right now which was looking like my next RC. However, As I got pulled further and further in to the Tamiya Black Hole, I read more about the Tamiya Catalogue. The Avante holds a special place at the top of the tree it appears. Now I was around 1 years old when it was released, but from what I gather it was pretty impressive albeit complicated. Then came a cheaper Vanquish, and then an Egress which is apparantly the best of the 3 albeit not as desirable as the original. That said, I decided there was 3x Tamiya's at the top of the tree. Im not bothered about originals etc, but theyll be at least built. The 3 are:

 

Porsche 934 (30th, 45th or Tamico, not fussed)

Avante Black Special

Egress Black Edition

 

Thats my grail list. You dont have to agree, Im sure theres better options. But thats my list. My top 3.

Ive got two Hobbywing Sensored Brushless systems brand new, but decided to go brushed. So Stage 2 (Stage 1 is charge a battery). 
 

 

It went together beautifully. The quality is a complete other level to the other Tamiya's Ive build. Can certainly see why its so highly regarded. That said, the blister packaging as great as it looks, is a bit annoying. Ive stuggled to open it without ripping it, and you find yourself taking bits from a blister pack, then a bag, then another bag etc.

I know I had a BZ motor earlier, but TZ matches the colour scheme so I swapped 😂

Next up, Ball Diffs. I hate Ball Diffs. Ive never ever got them right ever since my HPI Pro 2 and 3 Days. That said, I opened a beer for dutch courage, changed my T Shirt to an old one before I got Tamiya AW Grease on it and on we went:

 

 

Went suprisingly well. 
 

Bag 1 Done. The fit and finish is beautiful. Cant wait for Bag 2, however the Mrs is home now so time to spend some time with her to get me out the dog house from buying this 👍🏻

Got a little bit more done before bed. 
 

I went with the Torque Splitter as I suppose it was a hop up so must be an improvement right? (You get both in the box). Also got the upper deck on which is very nice!

 

I dont know if its just me, or back in the early 90s did Tamiya expect people to have 3 arms and hands? The read stabiliser was a challenge to line up but got there after a few attempts.

 

I then started on the RearA Arms. These are the most bizarre things Ive ever seen! I wanted a different build and thats what I got! Its all so complicated and different. In a good way. I think?!

 

I put a screw in wrong in this pic, rest assured its sorted now:

 

 

I wanted to leave it there but I was so intriuged as to how these mounted. Shock horror it required you to grow a third arm to hold stuff in place but got there in the end. 
 

 

You needed to be a Worlds Strongest Man competitor push the roll bar links on. My poor thumbs!

 

I finished the drive shafts and got them mounted as I didnt wanna stop and leave tiny grub screws a

on the pit mat. So got those mounted. 
 

 

 

One concern...... the motor seems to be at an angle? Is this right? Feels ok but looks wrong!?

Felt awful yesterday, got in from work and went straight to bed, but got a bit more done today, mainly the front end:

 

 

 

The hubs are gorgeous, and the steering is buttery smooth. Not many parts left now so must be getting to the ends 😕

 

Onto the shocks. Nothing special, just basic shocks. Not sure I like the screw adjuster, Id prefer a theaded adjuster. They dont feel AMAZING , but theyll be fine for the amount of run time this will get. Also need to attempt to pick up a BD15 as I think Ive slightly cross theaded one.

 

 

Anyone know if BD15 is avaliable without buying the whole shock set?

I cracked on until the early hours this morning once the Mrs went to bed. Weve got guests the weekend so didnt wanna leave it half built. 
 

I rebuilt the shocks as I wasnt happy with them. I take back what I said, they're fine now:

 

 

I got the rears mounted with the Wing Mount

 

 

And the fronts:

 

 

 

Then it was kinda finished? Not sure Ill run this but I thought why not put some electrics on it anyway?

 

Found a brand new servo and ESC in my parts. What is up with this servo saver? It feel ceramic? Is there an upgraded one? Also not even sure the ESC runs this motor, not that Ive got a Tamiya Connector battery anyway....

 

 

I added the antenna mount and battery strap and mounted the wheels and tyres. 
 

 

 

I think I should have either left the electrics out or gone brushless. I dont think the motor is a 2 minute job to change though now...

 

That said, that was a fully enjoyable build! Now onto the bodyshell.......

 

Im awaiting a phone call to see if Im in work today, if not Ill pop to a modelshop and pick up some PS( Black and start the body.....

Just returned my XV-02RS PRO Chassis kit as I don't see myself building it now and thinking of purchasing the Tamiya Egress Black Edition. How do your rate the overall build, quality and running experience compared to say the Avante?

 

Also... noticed the price has somewhat spiked from the suggested £379 to £499! 😠

 

I have the Top Force Evo and that's a quality kit, but would like something equal if not better to go with it?

Blimey, I paid £299 for my Egress Black Edition. Theres a regular edition ReRe coming soon BTW. Im not sure how much use Ill be to your questions but:

 

The build was very fun and high quality throughout.

 

Ive never ever ran the Egress, and dont intend to

 

Ive not even opened my Avante Black Edition, I dont think Ill ever build it 

 

Im after a Top Force Evo next, from what I know, the Avante & Egress are better quality, high end, but the Top Force Evo performs much better and is more durable etc

Top Force Evo is a very nice build and quality to match. When and where did you purchase that Egress Black Edition from for £299 and I wasn't aware there was another ReRe coming?

SC Models had an offer on. Egress Black for £299, Avante Black for £399. I bought them both at that price then they shot up in price. 
 

Theres a ReRe Egress (not black edition) coming soon (Feb)

I've scoured the internet looking and the price is far too high for this kit however, I've got a few price matches on Kyosho Optima kits that will make a good substitute. Choices, choices...

Your next option is Tamico and play the Customs/VAT Lottery
