Popular Post Shergar
As its halloween, I though what better name to give this cobbled together crawler/trailer 😁 Earlier this year i bough a RTR Maverick Scout to mess about with, and bar grenading the gearbox with a Holmes Hobbies and wet grass moment of excitement, found it a tough old truck. So I collected a few spares just incase.... and a couple of Radshape old stock chassis.... and you can guess the rest 🤣 Currently its all Scout/RGT/Mauler bits bar the back axle which is a higher ratio in (I think) a RGT crusher axle casing (hence the messy link attachment, but it was cheap) with Mauler lockouts, a set of beadlocks I bought from @Hell horn. You might notice Tamiya CVA’s! I’m waiting for softer rear springs hence the ballast on the load bed, but they seem ok and smooth enough for me. Power is a HH Crawlmaster sport 540/20 and a Hobbywing 1080. I’m trying to get the right ride height, but I think a nibble on the arches at the front or all the shocks raising a notch. I might just run it and let the tyres chew the arches to fit 🤐😉 Any thoughts on the tyre shell interface? The Shell is a Proline GMC with absolute sods of wheel arches.... Hell horn.
Cool build. I'd get ride hight right first. Then see how much the wheels catch body. Then cut to fit. Apart from that. Looking good. I stated with a super cheap massively abused maverick scout with slowly became a Scx10 type build.
Shergar
So I’ve masked better, but I have the middle sorted - just the rest left now. I’m hoping once the films off it looks good from 10 yards! Note how high the bed is with those springs. PS57 Pearl white over PS63 bright gunmetal - or better known as half full cans in the “some still left” box 😂
Popular Post Shergar
So weathering finished, I’m not sure if it needs more off or more on, however I’m gonna wedge in a hedge then roll it down a hill on its first outing so it’s really irrelevant 😂 It needs a bed cover, still deciding what so far. Undecided on mirrors and wipers.

Stormbringer
That looks pretty good and does look like real rust
stimpy
Looking fun!! With regards: Mirrors - though not cheap I would thoroughly recommend the LC70 mirror - they look fantastic, and also swing out of the way when bashing through stuff!.. If not then id say stick with the generic rubber Yota options.. Bed - I'd be tempted to cut the bed out, form a drop bed of sorts maybe?. If not you could just make a tarp out of vinyl with fake poppers on and stick in position... Have fun!
Shergar
Stimpy I think a tarp cover is the way to go, stapled to some ply, though I will probably silicon the lot to the bed. Off to google how terrifying £££ those mirrors are 😁
stimpy
Sadly nowt is cheap!!! The generic rubber options you can get from china for like a £5 or so.... I'd just glue a bit of tarp direct, save the wight of the ply and will also give it that saggy look with time! If you're into saggy Ofcourse 😂
Shergar
So maiden voyage today of the Frankenscout and I'm quite happy, nothing fell off and it didn’t break! I might go for a higher pinon or a faster motor for the trail, but for crawling I reckon it will be spot on (I hope!). Obviously wet leaves and drizzle is not exactly optimum trail combination either. Body is a little high for my liking but not rubbing anywhere bar the corners of the front arches when on lock, so the scissors are probably coming out to remedy this too. A little video in action, note the lovely transmission whine, but that’s the nature of these clone gearboxes I guess. Shergar
Been out again this afternoon in the Frankenscout, so a few more impressions. The Hobbywing 1080 is fabulous, superb control and the 100% reverse is great for rocking back and forward out of ruts, a bigger jump from a HW1060 than I anticipated. It could do with a little more speed however - maybe an increase in wheel radius from 100mm or a higher pinion size. I'm running a 540 20 turn Holmes Crawlmaster, I might put in the 540 35 turn trail master I have to see what happens. The centre of gravity is a million times better than a regular Scout, and the approach angles plenty acceptable still. The 20kg Power HD servo seems upto the job too. However the main disaster is the magnetic body mounts, there fine unless you decide squeeze through gaps you shouldn't 😁 so I think rear bodypins or a hinge at the rear at least are on the cards.
stimpy
Cool man! The 35T motor will be a bit quicker but at the cost of less smooth lower revs and off idle. Depends how you drive it really. I guess try and see! As you suggest, bigger pinion or tyres will up the gearing also... Have fun!
Shergar
Now the Frankenscout’s sibling is a regular scout, however the factory servo failed last week after probably to much submersible action 🤐 so I thought I’d give the axle a strip down and service. Anyway, where was I? Oh yes earlier in the year I gave the axle a grease with Red ‘N’ Tacky grease, and put some rubber shielded RC Bearings on the 3 exterior facing outputs. Well here is the outcome. Now bearing in mind the Scouts been submerged at least 20+ times and probably used for 50/60+ hour long runs with just a hose down and GT85 afterwards, this is the result. I thought some of you might be interested 👍 The pinion bearings were rusty, but still functional if very noisy, however all the other bearings and the shafts and main gear were moving surprisingly smoothly and freely. So for a well abused swamp buggy 🤣 I can reccomend Red ‘N’ Tacky and RC Bearings.
stimpy
That's a lot of grease! 1
Shergar
Finally got round to swapping the servo and adding a Outback high rock servo and steering links. Scalpel on the new hub carriers and for few pence over £10 I have some very improved steering lock. Yes, the stupid/surprisingly good mud plugging tyres kiss the links on full lock… I’m not sure if the Savox has the power needed but it was in a draw in the workshop 😂
Shergar
Went for a stroll yesterday with my youngest to test the rejuvenated SCX, and make everything filthy 🤣 Both are running the same Holmes 540/20T and 16T pinions but it’s surprising just how much speed difference larger radius tyres make (not that either these go very quick with that set up!). If you do then rotate them backwards a few splines, this will help with the arc of your steering and improve ledge climbing ... You may have to rework the drag link no doubt..
Shergar
Nothing so sophisticated as splines sadly Stimpy! Just a screw and a prayer!

Popular Post Shergar
Took an antique design and fitted an antique Parma body, both so old HPI are considering bringing the combo out as a new model 🤣 I have to take a diamond tipped cane down the woods now I’m an Escalade owner 😎 Edited February 5, 2022 by Shergar 2

Popular Post Shergar
I got a parcel from Modelsport earlier in the week…. some Fastrax Cutter soft crawler tyres. https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/fastrax-cutter-supersoft-tyre-with-memory-foam-inserts-118mm-dia-2-19in-scale-tyre-441982 Chesp as chips at just over a £10 a pair, and quite large for 1.9’s - think TRX4 sized tyres. However the extra 15/20mm over the previous 100mm tyres has made a noticeable difference in capability and speed, even if the rolled sidewall shape means they rubbish side stepping at 45 degrees, as they slide downwards. (Bearing in mind however the Frankenscout weighs as much as a Scammel and handles like one too). Now the innocent incline pictured below raised about 20 metres in height and was fully of best Essex clay and very fresh hoof prints - who knows who was hacking ponies up the hill but they will sleep well tonight! Now this illustrates the limitation of the tyre - great for clay clogged wheelspin, but not great for clay clogged traction. But to be fair, popped in reverse and given a bit of speed and different line it pushed through. The ramblers who watched it progress were impressed it got up the hill without the hand (or boot) of god giving it nudge, so much they wandered down rather than go the long way. It was only when I walked/slid/swore my way back down hill myself I realised what a bugger it was, and figured the ramblers must have be uttering every swear word under the sun at me 🤣 A quick clay rinse and I headed back home, when just 2 minutes from the car I lost a wheel nut, first time I’d ever done that, but almost 2 hours of being a big kid can’t be bad can it 👍 Overal for the money you can’t go wrong for a trail tyre, they look much better in the flesh too than the Fastrax images where they look donut shaped.
