Return to the familiar fold

Hi guys,

I'm based in Farnborough in Hampshire, and glad to be joining the forum. I used to have a Hotshot II back in the 90's (traded for it with a mate for a pair of Air Max 90s😂). My little bro used to have a Black Foot.

I stumbled across Tamiya again on the weekend somehow and and I'm now set on getting a car again, going to visit a localish store tomorrow. I'm looking for a bit of nostalgia, so really glad to see all the re re's that have come out over the last couple of decades.

I'm looking for something to build and to play with my son, and he's gonna like jumping it, so thinking of a Mad Bull or perhaps a Blitzer Beetle. Are those durable? Well for a Tamiya anyway

Any advice would be very welcome, in particular on the selection of a first purchase back into the RC world. Also, I see there have been advances with motors to brushless and Ni-cad batteries are a thing of the past now! 🤔

Cheers!

Welcome aboard.

Can't beat a Tamiya for a good fun kit to build together ~ durability wise though lots beat them as you know but no RC is invincible.

I think of the two you mentioned I'd go for the Blitzer Beetle.
Start there and see where it leads you both. :good:

If its for yourself go with the re-release you want. If your son is going to do most of the driving I'd look at the more modern Tamiya option such as the tt02b (4wd),  dt03 (2wd) or comical buggy series. You still get the fun of a tamiya kit but the designs are 20 years more up to date which gives you more durability and performance for almost the same price. More time driving, less time repairing.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys🙂

Yes Bajadre, it was a great swap for an old pair of Nike's and gave me my first ownership of a genuine Tamyia, as opposed to the ready to race £30 jobbies from Argos! Big Homer I think it was called. A midi hi-fi is also a fair trade!😆

Thanks for the links Larry. I've gone with the Mad Bull for a few reasons, detailed in link to my build thread below, but I think that if I get the RC bug badly then I'll be picking up a Neo Scorcher next, it seems like a real bargain for a 4WD buggy.

welcome to the forum 🙂

i see you have decided on the mad bull and it looks pretty kool, i might buy one some day as im itching to build another kit 🙂

the tt-02b chassis is a decent platform but it is a touring car chassis hence the b for buggy i have a tt-01 its predecesor and it is decent but unsure how it would hold up to been a buggy 🙂

heres my tt-01 next to a re-re grasshopper 🙂

for the price you could try a https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/tamiya-sand-viper-dt-02--25688

it is one of my favourites but only 2 wheel drive or just get a re re lunch box to race against the mad bull 🙂

enough drunken shenanigans from me 😛
