Tamiya Monster Beetle pics/vids/banter

Hi all,

Just thought i'd post some vids for fun. One of my cars' (this one, obviously) is a frankenstein Mk1 Tamiya Beetle/Mud Blaster.  It's got pretty much all original parts on the chassis apart from the necessary tie wrap around the back chassis as I got fed-up losing the dog bones!! It also has metal bearings.

It's running a 14 x 2 Mega Motor Dirt Oval brushed motor, a ModelSports Sniper ESC, standard Acoms servo and receiver and a 3500MaH NIMH battery and the all important MIP super  ball differential! Just a fun  basher with a hard shell (don't know what it is but it IS bulletproof. Also have the proper Monster Beetle shell, but don't run it with that as it likes to spend alot of time on its back!

Only get about 15 mins run-time on the NIMH flat out (which is how I always drive), but with multiple batteries (some inherited) it's ok.

Dibs to Stormbringer, who may well recognise the location (... it's changed alot in the past months!). Saw RC tyre marks when I got there, so obviously someone else had been before me!

Johnny 5, as I call this car, did pretty well with the heap of gravel, which was fairly soft, so his tyres dug in. Damages; only had the suspsension pop out and a tie rod to re-screw after bashing like a hoon. Not bad for an ancient car. Toying with the idea of Lipo etc, but think it would just be too much power.

Any pics/vids of yours?

Cheers...and enjoy the fitba!

Haha, I suspected that they might be. Thnaks for the steer, before. The ground is actually better for running now. Do you know what they're building there? Please, god, not more student flats!! Lol. Yeah, was a little bit paranoid that I might be caught. There are usually dog walkers etc., but place was empty...apart from deer!

they are stabilising the cliff faces by putting earth ramps in up the cliffs and the big hole in middle is getting ramped as well according to the guys doing the work

there hasnt been a lot of folks there lately but folk do turn up from time to time when were bashing

i think they will prob knacker it for the dirt bikes but make it better for the rc cars

when were you there ?

Weird they're doing it for safety, when 'No-one is supposed to be there'. I did notice today that they seem to be prepping to lay more concrete, also they've done away with some of the concrete features. It looked alot like they were re-instating the access road...and I'm wondering what for? Most of gorge floor was also flattened and it seemed old industrial copper wiring was being ripped out too (under the top soil). I wonder if it might end up an industrial estate.

If you go to page 1068 of what did i do to my model today Yrkoons posted some vids when we were at quarry

theres that many ways into it and its hard to keep folks out

i just hope it doesnt end up an industrial estate or a building site

we were there Wed and Friday evenings last week there

it looks like they have just cleared the access  road and where they prepped for concrete is going to be a temp shed for heavy machinery

they are also going to ship in topsoil for the ramps up cliffs and according to the workies let nature overgrow the slopes  but will see what happens

True, true. I really appreciate you giving me the word on it. It was alot of fun today, bashing around.

That makes sense, I saw marking on the access road today for concrete. Just concerned about the 'grooming' they've done on what was the flat surface further up, where my vid was posted. It was almost perfectly flat.  No idea what they're going to do, but it's a large space, so developers....

It struck me that there don't seem to be any rc car off road circuits in Scotland, pretty much. There appeared to be one up Aberdeen way and Dumfries, but apart from that....nilch. That sounds weird, as much of the country is wild, but it's hard finding spots!

I'll check out your run (if I can find it here, as not used to navigating the site!). Lol.

Aw ra best (and fingers crossed for tomorrow)!

Just watched the vids, cheers. Good fun. You need an 'ol monster truck for those gravel peaks. I feel better that I broke less than you guys ;-). Very hard to get decent run ups though.

Not had anything out this week as no time, but might try for it tomorrow. Considering getting a Tamiya TT02 buggy style to add to my collection. I'll probably keep the Mutant Monster Beetle, as my 4 year old nephew has got into it now!

I'm going to sell my other Tamiya TT01E, in parts, but full kit (not my speed run car) and my Midnight Pumpkin Chrome (original), while it's still not too beat up! Ridiculously clean for an ancient car.

Anyone got any recommendations?  I'd prefer something Tamiya TT02B based as I bought parts in my novice state that I can't make fit the TT01 (TT02 alu drive shaft) and latterly the TT02 High Speed Gear Set (which I bought on mis-placed reviews and will be too much hassle to fit to the TT01 speed runner). However, I'm still open to a Tamiya TT02 street car, but don't want to drop £100 on it, which seems to be the go during 'lockdown' and the lack of cheaper euro cars on Ebay due to the Brexit postage costs!!

Cheers.

Love the monster Beetle. My buddy had one when we were kids and it looked incredible!!

Mine has been on the shelf awaiting fixing for a few years now sadly..... Have the super ball diff to install, has metal bearings and a decent servo already....

One day👍

Hi Stimpy,

Like your username! They are cool; Monster Beetles. Had the Beetle out the other day and well; lost two suspension springs (found them again after searching for ages!) and noticed the chassis tower was cracked when I got back home. This would explain the shocks popping off everytime i've had the Beetle out recently.  I think my nephew slamming the buggy into a wall repeatedly probably resulted in this! Haha.

Anyhoo, I've decided to sell the Beetle as is (will glue chassis tower first and declare it in my ad), but didn't want to drop another x amount on a parts tree for one part! Plus, only getting about 15mins run-time out of the buggy before i'm switching batteries again. It's running NIMH and I don't want to upgrade to LIPO as it's just not built for it, so will incur alot more repairs, which I'm not up for. Been a blast though, but it will join my Tamiya Midnight Pumkin that I'm currently selling, along with spare parts; motors, shells and ESCs. It's been a labour of love and great fun, but it's someone else's turn now.

So, keeping my speed run TT01 and just bought a 2nd hand Team Associated B6D buggy (for offroad...maybe onroad), which arrived today. So, down to only these two cars soon.

What you running?

Cheers
