Oh, decisions decisions, RW do 10t to 14t…. What shall I choose for Krystal?

Any pointers?

Not sure how small a pinion you can get away with. You're using a larger 550 size, correct? 48dp have quite small teeth, so the tooth engagement won't be fantastic, if you decide to go much smaller.

14, down from 16, is a very decent 12.5% decrease.

13 is an 18.75% decrease.

Surely you can't need much more than that?

You’ve seen the original crawling vid where she climbs a 45° dirt incline and descends through a rock garden….   that was on a 540 can.

The recent vids where she’s climbing kerbs and being flung around is on the 550 can.

I don’t know that she needs a gear down for performance as so far she’s not failed me in any challenge I’ve set, but I’m thinking about reducing the load for longevity as the chassis is geared for a plastic truck shell not the steel behemoth and the motor was warming up, however I didn’t test the actual temp so all could be fine - I need to take her on a long trail walk with my temp gun next and see what’s what…

Ye I'm keeping the original gearing there's nothing wrong with. Just had to order a new pinion  to fit the 5mm shank on new motor I think 5mm is a overkill for crawling though.

Absolutely, ordinarily It’s fine - I just happen to be running a bodyshell that weighs nearly 5kg on its own …   😂

Decided to bite the bullet and get the (overpriced) "high-clearance skid", from Bowhouse RC. This is to replace the standard one, which has that lump sticking downwards. The Venture tends to get stuck high-centred... A LOT... so this will go a long way to curing that.

But, yeah, it's overpriced. As in "£56 delivered to the UK" overpriced! However, I figured that since the hang-ups were drastically hurting my enjoyment of this otherwise-fantastic truck, I would just go for it.

The 3D printing is very nice. THANKFULLY!!

I was concerned about this (and had hesitated to pull the trigger), because the advertisement shots look absolutely awful!!!

Anyway, that wasn't the case. It looks great, it's nice and strong and it fits perfectly.

However, it only has a 3/5 rating, on Bowhouse's own website. The reasons soon became obvious...

1- I had to fit it loosely, just for the moment, as although this part is 100% compatible with a standard HPI Venture, it is not compatible with standard Venture hardware. Longer screws are required, but not supplied.

This isn't too bad, as the Shapeways advert does state this, but it also states "Use M3 washers or shims as needed to eliminate play at link mounts".

2- This "play" that I have to "eliminate as needed" is way too much to simply use any washers, or shims... unless you want to start stacking them!

It turns out that the gaps have been designed to fit wider Axial-style rod end balls, not narrower HPI-style rod end balls... on a product designed to fit on an HPI Venture and ONLY an HPI Venture! A bit daft,  really.

You can see how much narrower the ball is.

Thankfully, my spare Gmade GS02 rod end balls are "Axial-style", so they'll solve my issue. Still need to order longer bolts, though!

Thanks to a good deal I got from @Alex97, on a Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport 550 12t 5-slot; I was able to upgrade the motor in my Venture.

The little yeah Racing Hackmoto V2 540 35t is a fine wee motor, but lacks the smoothness and progressive delivery of the HH 5-slot.

I suppose it will also benefit from slightly more weight over the nose.

Anyway, I love this motor in my Komodo and the Venture always felt snatchier on-throttle. Glad it's sorted.

Cheers, Alex! :good:
