Everclear1984's Maverick Scout

Here are a few shots from my first outing with the Scout and venture into the world of crawlers. I found it incredibly frustrating at first but the better I got the more I enjoyed it. I'm glad I ran it stock before making and mods, it gave me a good idea of what needs doing and why. The wheels need weighting for sure and the body could do with being mounted a bit lower. It arrived with a leaking shock but I'll be doing the fuel tube mod as soon as the replacement arrives. Other than that I think all I need is a more suitable battery as the 5000mah lipo I'm currently using is way too heavy and there's no way of mounting it lower down.

Anyway, here are the pics -

I got busy making a few improvements last night, just the cheap/free mods for now. I've done the fuel tube mod, 10mm on each shock, took a dremel to the bump stops on the steering knuckles, countersunk the bolt that they stop against and bent out the front bar that catches on the diff case. These small changes have given me so much more steering that I've actually had to dial it back a bit. I've also removed the bumpers and the tabs they mount on and fitted a small 3s lipo on top of the servo. I managed to get out for an hour today and the changes are very noticeable, it now sails over rocks where it was snagging or falling over backwards before! Since getting home I've butchered my spare shell to get it as low as possible, it looks very usable now :)

Next up - wheel weights

Just a couple more updates

I've weighted the tyres with wheel balancing weights, 160g in the front & 100g in the rear. It's made a huge difference when climbing. I've also bent the rear links for extra clearance, not sure how much of a difference that's made yet.

I really need to give my Scout a service and take it to the woods.  Thanks for the motivational photos.

Just a little update. The battery tray has now been removed to lower the COG even more and I've moved the lower links inboard. I didn't do a very tidy job of the links but the improvement is immediately noticeable.

I've not made many changes recently, apart from cutting 3 coils off of each spring. The Scout is still running strong and putting a big grin on my face. I'll be taking it out tomorrow so hopefully I'll have some more recent pics to share :)

Update.

I was having trouble with the front left C hub snapping, to the point where I got through 4 in 2 days! There doesn't seem to be a direct replacement aluminium hub so I picked up a set of cheap scx10 knock offs. A bit of modding and they fit perfectly :)

Oh and I fitted some Hot Bodies Rovers. Testing will have to wait til next week.

I got busy in the garage last night and converted the Scout to 4ws. I already had a spare servo and made a servo plate and mounts from a piece of ally I had laying around. There was no need for extra cables as I have a 4 channel radio with channel mixing.

I gave it a test yesterday and although I really like it I might go back to regular 2ws. I finally got my Scout to the point where it's been 100% reliable for the past dozen or so runs and having 4ws just gives me something else to worry about breaking lol.

Here's a little vid showing how it handles now -

If you countersink that hole and use a matching bolt you'll get a fair bit more steering lock.  With Rovers you'll probably start hitting the tires on body or shocks though.

Still need to get mine out more often...

So the stock plastic rear diff locker finally gave out today and I'm supposed to meeting with a couple of friends this weekend so I had to come up with a quick fix. I had some Axial lockers laying around that I bought a while ago but couldn't be bothered to fit so I decided to give it a go.

First off I removed the moulded plastic from inside of the diff case, this was probably the most difficult part as I was using a dremel and really didn't want to damage the case.

The Axial locker then simply dropped in

Next I had to take the dremel to the Scout axles as they're too thick to fit into the Axial locker

Perfect fit and no more rounded lockers, now I just need to find the energy to do the front!

Have you got a link to those hubs please as I am going to fit weights to my tyres which will no doubt lead to a lot of stress on the c hubs. Also did moving the links inboard require a lot of cutting etc?
