Derka's HPI Savage X F4.1

I saw this come up on Gumtree reasonably local to me and dismissed it as it was Nitro and I didn't know what it was. The Advert just said "Nitro 1/8th Buggy".

After a Google I came to the conclusion it was some form of HPI Savage. I posted on here and it was, which was great news. Its a Savage X F4.1 (https://www.hpiracing.com/en/kit/859)

It was advertised at £100 and he took £80 for it since it needed some work as the glow plug had stripped the threads in the underhead button and as such, the glow plug kept popping out.

I thought it may need work (hopefully the engine actually runs!?) but its something new for me to learn being my first Nitro. It came boxed with manual, spares and other random odds and ends.

Ive not done much apart from taken all the shocks off and cleaned the bodies and springs and checked them over. 2 of the 8 have bents shafts which I have straightened enough but some new shocks will be needed. 2 of 8 had good oil, the rest are low and full of bubbles.

Ive noticed the spur is stripped but a new spur is included.

I carefully set about removing the cooling fin and checking what was underneath as a member pointed out there should be swarf somewhere. There was! The underhead button is completely stripped - I can only assume from brute force and/or removing/inserting the plug when the underhead button was hot and stripped the threads. Similar to a real car engine when changing spark plugs I guess?

How does the cylinder bore look to you guys? Is it supposed to be so dirty? Think it will run? It turns over when I rotate the clutch bell(?) and makes a honk type sound so hopefully has some compression.

One of the wheel nuts was so tight and previous rounded off I had to use heat and brute force to get it off. Are they metal or tough plastic?

List of bits that need to replaced so far

2 Shock Shafts
Shock Oil all round (What weight?)
Replace spur gear
Underhead button (I have 3 glow plugs, 2 work so should be OK on that front as their threads are good)
4 New wheel nuts (Upgrade alloy/metal parts available?)
1x Rear Axle shaft (Heat has knackered threads, might be salvageable)
Upgrade to 2.4GHz Radio Gear

Thanks. I'll take a look again at the engine tomorrow and clean some more.

The low speed and high speed needles do seem to be screwed in quite far. I'll reset them both flush once I'm at a point to start the engine and tune. I hope the engine is ok... Had a look and replacements are more than I paid for it... That's the risk I took though.

Could always convert to leccy should it come to that.

Is the engine hard to remove? It looks like 4 hex screws from the underside?

Yup I've had the engine out and taken off what I can. Got stuck at the 3 clutch shoes though. Left them alone and just cleaned the low speed needle out and slide. Cleaned up the plastic exhaust too.

Are the aluminum ones much better or just for looks?

I added some drops of after oil and cycled the engine a few turns and left it at BDC.

Front diff was all good.

Just gotta buy the underhead button and axle stub along with some wheel nuts and hopefully it will start!

Ordered some parts so I will hopefully know if the engine will run this weekend!

HPI# 86121 http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86121 - The current washer is elipictal and well worn on the end of crankshaft

HPI# 1448 http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/1448 - Current one has stripped threads

HPI# Z680 http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/z680 - One was rounded off and the others are well worn

HPI# 86065 http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/86065 - I damaged the threads on one stub axle removing the rounded off lock nut
