ABOUT THE CHASSIS

 

Slickrock is the first true rock crawler from Vaterra. Using a 1/18 scale provide design, this crawler utilizes design elements from real-world rock crawling competitors and like all Vaterra vehicles retains it's scale looks. A multi-link suspension and solid 4mm axles provide the ultimate combination of lightweight agility and strength. The full-time 4WD drivetrain powers all 4 wheels through a centre-mounted 3-gear transmission with a spool and slipper, providing grip and torque at each and every wheel. The positioning of the transmission provides the Slickrock with outstanding balance for tackling the toughest climbs and manoeuvres.

 

To fully achieve the scale look of the full-scale rock crawling machines, the Slickrock comes with a complete cage, authentically replicating the look found crawling rocks around the world. To provide the traction that rock crawling demands, each Slickrock comes with licensed tyres mounted to beadlock-style wheels. The full size (1/10th scale) servo provides extreme torque and added weight to the front axle and in turn provides more than enough power to handle the most brutal of terrain while the added weight helps with front end grip.
 

THE REAL DEAL

From the forests of West Virginia to the deserts of California, wherever steep ravines and axle busting boulders abound, rock crawlers are there. The 4 x 4 equivalent of a mountain goat, these amazing machines can assault brutally uneven terrain without a single wheel leaving the ground. But drivers need more than a rig with long-travel shocks and oversized tyres to make it in this sport. It takes cat-like balance and nerves of steel, too. Any driver lacking these qualities will find himself hanging upside from his seat harness, waiting to get flipped upright... a lot.

Looks top heavy and is this a rear mounted battery ?? .. Looks too much like plastic fantastic and a money pit in the making .. Some good new ideas but only being a 1/18 scale is really going to limit its ability to any thing other than look good or go over pebbles..

Looks good, probably just the right size for someone with a small garden to set up a little crawling course. Of course price is the big question.

Some interesting new products coming from Vaterra....

 

This would be ideal for someone who wants a small crawler for limited space or for climbing back-garden obstacles.

 

Just has to be cheap enough for an impusle purchase....or else the Maverick Scout would win the day.

I am having trouble figuring out where Vaterra sit in the grand scheme of things, and I don;t think I am alone.

 

Horizon Hobby are the people behind them...but is this a competitor for Losi, or complementary to the Losi brand Horizon also have?

 

Their rock racer was aimed to not quite compete with Axial, the crawler here is pricier than the Losi, and the tourers look nice and at

ECX are also owned by Horizon, ECX are the budget range of RTR models.

 

Losi and Team Losi Racing (TLR) are 2 different companies. TLR do all the kits and race spec models such as the new 8ight, 5ive, 22 etc. Losi do RTR models.

 

Losi have pretty much ended most of their range and passed on what is left to TLR. Vaterra is a much more professional and polished image and is probably taking their place!

 

So,

ECX = Budget

TLR = Race Spec / Kits

Vaterra = Everything inbetween

 

It's a slow process but it's slowly coming together. :good:

So...in other words...the Losi Mini Crawler is going to get discontinued sometime soon and this is basically it's successor in Horizon's lineup.

 

Cheers Nick....that does help to actually position them a bit.

 

The tourers would then be a direct match up against the HPI brushed models...which retail around the same price and come with 15T motors and waterproof gear. They retail around the same price point, costing a fraction more...but including everything you actually need to run the car.

Got to be good news for owners of older Losi kit....as well as good news for owners of new Vaterra kit...as existing upgrades may well drop straight on.

 

I have been doing a bit of Vaterra research prior to ordering myself a Kemora....and that seems to be based off the Mini8 running gear just with a longer chassis. Will know more about that when it arrives tomorrow as Modelsport will be posting it out today :)

does that mean losi are giving up on things or are they just devoliping new cars for the future as from what you said above it looks like there giving up to me

Losi is a brand....not an entity as such.

 

Horizon Hobby own the brand, and have decided to reposition it as the 'racing' brand, where the top flight kit will carry it's name. The 8ight buggy and truggy, and the top end stuff developed from it.

 

The 'cooking' Losi stuff appears to have been discontinued, but is popping up under the Vaterra name, with redeveloped and updated models based on the older Losi parts. This would explain how so many new models can just appear in such a short space of time. They were already developed!

 

Then you have ECX, which is Horizon's budget brand. Bit like Maverick is to HPI. Kits sourced from budget end Chinese factories, built to the parent companies specs and supported by their supply chain. People would buy Maverick stuff becuase it's HPI backed, but would turn their noses up if it was branded as Himoto, HSP, Acme etc.

 

Losi isn;t vanishing....it's just got a new name. Like Snickers :)

Hi. Anybody got one of these yet? I'm kinda torn between the Scout and the Slickrock as a cheap crawler. Could be tempted to pick either of them up this weekend...

I've had the slick rock since jut after they were released in the UK. All I have done so far is to move the esc into the battery box. fit a dynamite 1200mah Ni-MH battery crossways in the gap between the front struts and the receiver (having plasti dipped the battery  first), and then customized a front diff guard that comes up as far as the front of the steering servo. This protects the servo and steering assembly as well as the diff.

Ive used it in water (shallow) , mud , grass , sand etc etc and its been faultless so far. For its size its proved to be quite capable.
