Durability upgrades for HPI Mini Recon

Mr Wolf

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to make this truck as durable as possible without going crazy on the expenditure.

My priority is to try and find a wider, more rigid front bumper. The stock one is about as rigid as a wet noodle and it's a question of time before frontal impacts destroy the shocks and arms.

I see that T-Bone in the US make a direct replacement for about $14. Does anyone have any experience of these? If so, are they worth it? I will be running more than one MR together at the same time and am concerned that truck on truck impacts might be worse with such a bumper.

I also see that RPM make a front bumper for the RC18T/MT for $7. Has anyone modded the MR for this to fit it?

I'm new to this truck so if there are any "must have" durability mods/upgrades for the MR you know of please post them up. The stock drivetrain hopefully won't be an issue as I'll only be running the stock motor and with throttle EPA turned right down. The truck still scoots along at a reasonable pace though and certainly enough to destroy those flimsy shocks.

I'm OK with the whole speed thing now with the stock battery - the EPA adjustment gets them slow enough for my needs even on 7.2V.

I've got the tbone on mine, it's a worthwhile upgrade and stops the front end taking a beating nicely..

+1 on the team associated wheels also..

I got a tbone for the Recon.

The screws holding it on worked loose. I will (at some point) replace with longer screws and put a nut on them.

T bones are a must! You can also fit steel diff gears, and steel spur gear if you want! I destroyed my stock gears. But I run twin motors! Wheels and tyres are worth the upgrade as the stock wheels are pretty rubbish! You could swap out the shocks, stock ones are pants but I have not found any thing worth changing them too, the rc18t standard ones are what I run as they last the longest before dumping there oil!
