Kinda looks like a F1 or Formula E, but what’s with the TC name and 4x4?

That rear shot looks to be basically the spitting image of a Formula E car.

 

 

 

 

 

Colour me interested. As much as I really don't care for electric cars and the anti-combustion-engine movement, F-E cars do look cool.

Tamiya 58681 1/10 RC Formula E Gen2 Car TC-01 Chassis

In times of climate change, the automotive industry is constantly pushing the development of electric vehicles. The manufacturers gain many important insights into this from motor sports. Formula E has now established itself as a major global racing series and from 2020 has achieved official FIA world champion status. The series exclusively uses electric cars and is therefore an ideal topic for Tamiya, which as a well-known manufacturer has been relying almost exclusively on electric R/C models for decades.
We are happy to present the championship version of the Gen2 car design as used in this series this and last season. The basis for this model is the exciting, all-new TC-01 chassis, which features an extremely flat design to achieve the maximum effect of this and other formula car bodies.

Information about the model

This is a kit for a 1/10 scale R/C model, length: 430 mm, width: 188 mm, height: 99 mm.
The stylish, slim Formula E Gen2 body with covered wheels is precisely and elegantly reproduced in Polycarbonate. Separate add-on components reproduce further details such as rear wings and side panels.
Halo and mirror components are cast in white ABS. Decals are included to replicate the paint scheme of the championship car.
The new TC-01 chassis is an extremely adaptable, flat design.

Detailed information about the TC-01 chassis

In addition to the unique Formula E Gen2 body, this chassis is compatible with standard touring car bodies. The wheelbase is 257 mm.
A hybrid combination of monocoque and upper frame reminds of the TA07 and other modern Tamiya chassis. It offers superior stiffness and the potential for a whole range of bodywork.
The completely new front and rear internal suspension uses identical long left and right wishbones and spars for optimum leverage and efficient maintenance.
Embedded centrally in the monocoque area is the drive engine with internal front and rear suspension.
The oil-pressure dampers are operated by push rods and rocker arms. The use of different spacers allows the camber, caster and toe angles to be changed for maximum adjustment freedom.
Change the bumper and body mounts to choose between formula and touring car layouts.
The shaft-driven 4WD layout uses oil-filled TB-05 design transmission differentials for smooth, efficient drive.
Compatible with IFMAR battery packs with standard dimensions.
Many hop-up parts are planned in the near future to spice up the chassis even more!

Nothing yet. It should appear on Modelsport for pre-order in the near future. I suspect it won't be that cheap

Interestingly, the wheelbase is the same as a touring car so guess we can expect a lot more variants using their back catalogue of shells.

A standard touring car body could fit, although I'm not sure on the body posts.

Their higher end kits are very competitive, we have Tamiya classes over here but are far and few between. In Asia, Tamiya are very popular. Admittedly, Tamiya aren't for everyone, most see them as plastic models.   £249 for this kind of spec chassis is quite reasonable. Not all their chassis's are £99 plastic toys.

 

 

I'd definitely have to run it without that front bumper.

a lot of people think that tamiya cars are cheap plastic cars that  are weak, I have a lot of tamiya cars and some of them are a lot tougher then people think ,and I had a lot of other brands to that where worse then a tamiya, a lot praise arrma I had a typhon 3s blx and I found that car I piece of **** compare to my tamiya cars.

I just came looking to see if this was mentioned on here as I spotted it a few days ago and love the shape/design. Something more unique.

 

The only thing I don't like, well apart from the price tag  , is that the space on the chassis looks to limit what you could actually do with it regarding fitting longer motor cans and lipo, brushless set ups. 

 

Still looks great though imho.

Yeah it has a high price tage, but it is an upper end kit.

 

 

It does look pretty tight in there, not sure if it will use a standard size servo or a smaller type.

 

 

Also, does appear to be able to take lipo?

Oh don't get me wrong I understand the price tag as like you said it is going to be one of Tamiya's "upper" (higher) end model kits but I just want it cheaper like everything else.   😉

 

I found these pics that show the two different chassis set ups with body posts for the standard set up as well as using 4 posts for touring car shells etc.

 

On the set up on the right though with 4 body post mounts it does look like something is missing behind the motor, ...not sure it would mean fitting a 550 or similar is possible but it did get me curious.

Circled in red below is the mystery part. Does anyone know what it is?

 

Wondered if maybe it was a Tamiya ESC??

 

Could either be an ESC or RX.  Tamiya tend to use their own electronics for catalogue/brochure pics. Saying that though, looking at other pics I can make out another electronic device, just a servo and the device you've circled.

 

Good to see the adaption for 4 body posts, that means were not limited to just the FE shells.
