Hpi racing Baja 5r 1970 mustang boss 302 RTR

Well well, after unveiling this three years ago, then an unsettlingly long quiet spell .....hpi have just released the much anticipated Baja 5r rtr into many more stockists....

    Large-Scale Muscle Car Excitement!

The Baja 5R On-Road takes the HPI Baja concept to all-new places: right to the streets! With a lowered suspension designed purely for on-road action, the Baja 5R is the perfect way to enjoy large-scale fun while burning up the pavement! The iconic 1970 Ford Boss Mustang is the perfect fit for the rear-wheel drive large scale chassis, and the vintage 8-spoke wheels and Tarmac Buster tires are the ideal match for the Baja 5R's classic muscle car looks! The suspension and drivetrain is based on the extremely tough off-road Baja 5B race buggy, so you know the on-road version will be super-tough in any situation, plus it will be very easy to find spares and upgrades. The Fuelie 23cc engine will give the Baja 5R wheelspinning power and enough top speed to make your pulse race! The Baja 5R On-Road: Baja-tough tarmac performance!

    action_pic_1.jpg

The first thing to hit anyone who watches a radio-controlled car in action is how it looks - how realistic it is, how big it is and how it drives - and in the case of the Baja 5R, it quite simply looks amazing! Its size and speed, combined with the sound of the engine and exhaust smoke, all combine for an experience you must see for yourself. We've taken the classic muscle car styling of the 1970 Ford Boss Mustang and made it 1/5 scale - turning the Baja chassis into an amazing model almost 1 yard/meter long! Matched with satin chrome vintage-style wheels, the overall look is absolutely stunning - this really is a case of "the bigger, the better"!

    On-Road Baja Performance
Large-scale fans immediately took to the Baja line-up from HPI Racing when it was introduced, and RC hobbyists looking for something new and BIG have loved every version of the Baja since it was released. With the Baja 5R dedicated on-road version of our hugely popular Baja 5B off-road buggy, large scale RC fans have a whole new reason to love the Baja! A specialized set of suspension parts lowers the front and rear of the chassis to make it ideal for on-road driving, and the soft rubber of our realistic Tarmac Buster on-road tires enhance the handling and make driving the Baja 5R a total blast!

    action_pic_4.jpg

    New Dedicated On-Road Platform
The Baja 5R isn't a simple conversion - it's not just a buggy with a car body fitted onto it. The 5R features a complete set of all-new on-road specific parts, from the main aluminum chassis to most of the suspension parts, to make it a real performer on any paved surface!
    New On-Road Chassis

To start with, the Baja 5R's 4mm thick aluminum main chassis features zero front kick-up, instead of the angle at the front of the chassis on the buggy and truck versions. Off-road vehicles need a front kick-up angle for optimal performance off-road, but for on-road vehicles a much lower angle is best.

    onroad_comp_1.jpg

    Lowered & Optimized Suspension
The on-road optimization continues with the suspension parts such as the shocks, mounts and hub carriers. The Baja 5R's short rear shocks are shorter than the 5B, 5T and 5SC - in fact, they're the same as the front shocks, so you get equal-length shocks front and rear. Brand new front and rear shock mounts are fitted to the Baja 5R - when paired with the brand new front and rear hub carriers, these parts act together to lower the suspension and provide the best possible handling when you're driving on the road. The Baja 5R is also fitted with front and rear adjustable sway bars to minimize chassis roll in the turns for the best possible performance.

    New Body, Mounts and Bumper
The brand new 1970 Ford Boss Mustang body is molded from a single piece of polycarbonate, professionally painted and stickered, then fitted with a functional rear wing just like the full-size Boss Mustang! To securely fit the body in place, new adjustable front and rear body mounts hold the body in place, plus side mounts from the Baja 5T/SC truck kits are used for extra body rigidity. Finally, the all-new extra-thick, extra-dense front foam bumper is mounted to a super-thick new plastic bumper mount that protects the body when you're racing your friends.

The Baja 5R car is fitted with the powerful HPI Fuelie 23 engine for fantastic power, speed and convenience, and in addition to handfuls of parts made just for the on-road version, it's also fitted with the latest heavy-duty suspension and drivetrain parts, such as 24mm Heavy-Duty front hex hubs and Super HD Driveshafts for increased durability and minimal downtime!

    chassis_callout_1.jpg

Featuring the New TF-45 2.4GHz Radio System!
The Baja 5R also features the new TF-45 radio system - a 3-channel, 2.4GHz radio that has all the most-desired features experienced RC drivers crave. Among its many features are Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) digital 2.4GHz radio technology, end-point adjustments and electronic failsafe protection, plus dual-rate, trim and reversing functions. It's also lightweight and comfortable thanks to its drop-down steering wheel, changeable grip size and padded steering wheel.

    Enclosed Electronics Box
The Baja 5R features protection for its electronics and it's ready to tackle conditions like mud, rain and snow! The 2.4GHz receiver is safely stored in an enclosed receiver box, protecting it from the worst of wet and dirty conditions to ensure glitch-free operation. A large rubber plug provides easy access to the receiver battery. To remove the radio box when you're cleaning the car, just remove a few clips - no tools necessary! Please note: the electronics are not designed for submerged or prolonged wet weather operation. Be sure to rinse off any dirt or salt water with clean water immediately after driving. Check the receiver box to make sure no water is inside and let dry fully before driving again.

    Extra-Thick Aluminum Chassis!
The Baja 5R uses a unique chassis design that has inspired imitators and pretenders that are still trying to dethrone the Baja from the top of the heap. The extra-thick Baja monocoque aluminum chassis is formed from strong 6061 aircraft aluminum for light weight and strength, then bent into shape with computer precision to make it into an extra-rigid and super-strong platform for the engine, suspension and all other components of the Baja.

    Huge 23cc 2-Stroke Engine
The engine fitted in the Baja 5R is the Fuelie 23, a high-power 2-stroke engine using normal pump gasoline and 2-stroke oil. Its huge 23cc size is massively larger than normal nitro engines and the 2-stroke gasoline power is much easier to start and use than any nitro RC engine. Fitted with our High Flow Muffler and 8000 RPM performance clutch, you'll get awesome acceleration combined with amazing top speeds - not to mention a fantastic exhaust note to match the looks of the 1970 Ford Boss Mustang!

    8,000 RPM High Performance Clutch
Formerly an option part, the high performance 8000 RPM Clutch from the Baja SS and 5T is used to give the Baja 5R more punch, or acceleration, off the line. Lightweight clutch shoes and a strong heavy-duty spring are the integral parts of this unit, and you will definitely feel the power out of the turns!

45 Minutes of Driving Time per Tank!
The fuel tank holds 700cc of pre-mixed 2-stroke fuel, using normal pump gasoline and easily available 2-stroke engine oil. This amount of fuel will give you run times of 45 minutes or more and the handy flexible 'clunk' inside allows the engine to keep running even if the car is upside down after a crash. Imagine that - 45 minutes of fun before you have to stop to refuel! Welcome to large scale RC!

    Externally Adjustable VVC/HD Racing Shocks
All four corners of the Baja 5R are fitted with the same top-quality shock dampers that are on the racing-level Baja SS and the bigger (and heavier) Baja 5T. These are race-quality, endurance tested, oil-filled, externally adjustable coilover shocks for fantastic performance and heavy-duty track action! Extra-thick shock shafts provide security from crashes, threaded shock bodies allow instant ride height changes, and the externally adjustable piston design is tailor-made for fast trackside tuning. The new lowered suspension parts are the ideal fit for the Baja 5R, no matter whether you're bashing or racing!

    Durable On-Road Beadlock Tires
The Baja 5R comes standard with on-road tires designed for all-around use on a multitude of paved surfaces, from asphalt and tarmac to concrete and more. Whether you're driving on a prepared racing surface or a dusty vacant lot, the Tarmac Buster tires from HPI Racing not only look great, but they allow the Baja 5R to perform! With a thick heavy-duty black beadlock rim to make sure the tires stay in place, the Tarmac Busters look great mounted to the satin chrome vintage 8-spoke wheels. The retro-style tread pattern is also a great period match for the 1970 Ford Boss Mustang body!

    Extra-Strong Suspension Parts
HPI has always been known for its extremely rugged cars and trucks, starting with our earliest touring cars and carrying on with monster trucks and large-scale machines. The Baja 5R uses many of the same suspension components as the Baja SS and 5T, so you know you've got a tough car at your control. All of the new lowered components are made of the same durable plastic compounds using the same design philosophy as the Baja 5B, making the Baja 5R super tough, so you can bash, race and play with your friends for hours before needing to think about maintenance or repair.

    Protective Front Bumper
Complementing the durable suspension components and protecting the chassis from big crashes and mishaps, the Baja 5R is protected at the front by a massive foam bumper mounted to a thick plastic bumper mount. The foam bumper protects the front end of the huge 1970 Ford Boss Mustang body from major crash damage, helping it last for hours of driving enjoyment. The thick plastic bumper brace also protects the suspension from excessive damage so you can keep driving after almost any driving mishap.

    Powerful Vented Disc Brake
To bring something the size and speed of the Baja 5R to a safe and controlled stop, the brakes need to be extra-strong, reliable and foolproof. This is why we use two steel plates for brake discs, both of which are drilled for lightness. To keep the discs cool under pressure, a fan-shaped spacer is used to blast air through the vent holes drilled in each disc. This helps bring the Baja 5R to a safe, controlled stop.

    scale_version.jpg

    Protective CVD Boots
Helping to keep the Baja 5R running at top speed for hours at a time, the Super Heavy Duty driveshafts are fitted with extra-flexible rubber boots at each end. The boots keep mud, dirt and grass away from the driveshaft and axle joints to maintain efficiency and cut down the time spent on maintenance - and they also keep lubricating grease in place around the spinning joints.

    heavy_duty_panel_1.jpg

    Super Heavy Duty Components
The Baja 5R isn't just loaded with go-fast goodies, either - it's packed with HPI Super Heavy-Duty parts that will keep you bashing and racing all day long. 9mm thick #104966 Super HD dogbones are the starting point of the Baja drivetrain upgrade - these are new, thicker and stronger to outlast the roughest rides and racing action you can find! Extra-wide rubber boots are included to keep the dirt and mud away. Getting the power from the diff gears to the new dogbones is the #104965 wide Super HD Diff Shaft that perfectly fits the increased diameter of the dogbones and at the other end of the dogbones are lowered versions of the One-Piece Rear Hub for extra durability and longevity. At the front of the car is a pair of lowered Heavy-Duty Front Hex Hubs for increased toughness at the front wheels.

I hope it sells well for hpi's sake, but not really into on-road myself. It'll be interesting to hear real world reviews once it's out there, like "does it handle?"

It’s a stunner, but the limitations of use are even greater than an off road gasser in the UK....:ack:

    I think it's awesome, but I doubt it'll sell.

Very few will be comfortable with running a 1/5th petrol-powered RC on the street. Limited to after-hour carpark bashing, really.

It was out 3 years ago but got put on the back burner. Looks like they decided to start advertising it again. As already been said as a limited following and even less places to run one

Very cool. But unless you have access to a deserted tarmac runway there really is no where to use one in the U.K.

I purchased the hpi Baja 5R 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 115123 and it is cool.   That said, I'm not only a RC guy, but I'm a big fan of the Mustang.  The 23cc engine is very good and I have not tuned it yet, so it's still running rich.

Short term mods are to build or buy an exhaust tube to pipe the exhaust out to the body rear bumper area.  Right now the exhaust is over the rear axle and it gets oil all over the rear end and the inside of the body, big mess.  If anyone knows if there is a aftermarket exhaust option for the Mustang, please share.

Long term - I plan to remove the 23cc engine and install a Kingtech Jet Turbine engine :)
