Popular Post m4inbrain
Has been a while for me and a build thread, really just want to document the journey from ordering to building, and eventually (hopefully) to drifting. I did now get all the orders in, most of it is dispatched, likely to arrive between today and the 11th - part of the RC will be coming from the Netherlands. The idea here was to get a capable drift rig, with room to grow, without breaking the bank - but also, not to go all the way to walmart level in cheapness. So the majority of electronics is middle of the road - with a bit of top end sprinkled where it helps. With that, lets see the parts list so far. RMX 2.5 S kit. Comes from the Netherlands, is the "middle spec" version of the kit (comes as the cheapest classic, middle S and top RS). Can be upgraded to the RS version, plenty of hop ups available and in general a capable chassis that is more capable than i'll probably ever be. A few options for motor positioning (in front of the gearbox, behind the gearbox, on top of the gearbox), ESC mount on the back, and well.. It's an MST RMX. Next, motor: Onisiki 10.5t, 3800kv with mechanically adjustable timing, and two slots for the sensor cable (neater wiring). Nothing particularly special, it's a mid-range motor by a company that specialises in mid-range stuff, some of which is well loved (their Gyro, called Daruma, for example). It'll do me well for a while, and leaves room to grow to something higher quality/more expensive. Next, ESC. That would be a XR10 Stock 2s. Again, middle of the road. Does all the things drifters want (which apparently means Turbo and Boost function, i've yet to figure out what that exactly does). There's a few limitations (380A burst maximum etc) - but it'll do me for the first year, until i'll advance to something more tuneable and capable. No reason really to start with a £200+ ESC with all the functions in the world, and then ruining it by faffing about with 30+ settings. This is simple, it'll work. Next, servo: This is on the higher end of servos, while still reasonably priced. It's an 18kg low profile servo, programmable through USB (again, something i have no idea about, gotta figure that out as i go but apparently does make a difference). It's not advertised with speed (it's stupid fast though) - because that's adjustable, apparently. I got no idea to be honest, i saw this being recommended a lot, so on that one i had to go with what "pros" recommended. I do understand that the servo together with the gyro basically make or break your drifter, so yeah. On that one, i've got to figure it out as i go. Next, Gyro: It's a Yokomo DP302-V4. This is probably, comparatively, the most expensive/nicest part in the car. In general, there's two gyros standing out usually: this one, and the Futaba GYD470. Everything else is cheaper, and worse. There's good budget options available (Onisiki Daruma, as mentioned earlier), but these two are just a step above the rest. Not much else to say, this is what makes your RWD drifter work by countersteering, as well as (depending on the settings) slowing down the "return spring action". As in, if you let go of the steering, your servo doesn't just snap back to centre, but it slows it down, making the drift look more realistic as well as easier to control. Next, cap pack. Not really much to say. It's a cap pack. I just chose this because it's aluminium cased and kinda looks cool - same company and "style" as the motor. I did order the MST stealth mounting kit for the shell, don't want body posts sticking out of the body. The plan is to run a "basher shell" for now: Big fan of 86s, but a decade ago my first drifter (that never really worked) was an AE86, so to go with the times.. nah. This one looks good, and it's cheap enough to not care about if it gets dinged up. It's made by Killerbody, so quality will be decent - has light buckets, as well as moulded exhausts etc. It also comes pre-painted, so i all i need to do is to glue some magnets to it, and put it on the chassis. Can't argue for £36. Yes, it's not "homemade", but that also means it's, well, not "homemade by me" which is an important part if you want it to look right. I do have plans for a "shelf-queen" shell too, but we'll get there when we get there. For now, this will do plenty. Also wanted the car to look reasonably stock, not a rocket bunny screaming bosozoku thing with exhausts sticking a few yards out of the roof and whatnot. So far, that's it i think. I'll run the Noble NB4 with it, already got a few ideas of what i want to do with it (lights, remotely controlled fans, different shell etc), but this will get me going in the drift club. I really should stop meeting new people with new RCs, all it took was an hours visit at the local drift track to convince me that i absolutely do need one of those. 🙄 Anyway, more to come within the week.

Felt like 2 minutes, was half an hour blasting through the guys only battery lol. Even got some reasonably good looking drifting done. More importantly though, the people in the local drift club are very different from what i've expected - that's on me though. I thought it's all hip kids with their shiny JDM toys, lots of "bruv", "dude" and "fam" in their sentences. Turns out, 15 people there - all fat, all bearded (like me), all around my age (35+), all in some kind of trade (plumbers, builders, scaffolders etc) - proper lads. Incredibly nice people too - big part as to why i wanted to get further into it, expanding the social circle etc. Indeed the motor comes BNIB from one of the members at half RRP (who's incidentally also the inventor of something called "Clickstart", apparently a big hit with nitro-guys, basically starts any nitro via button on the remote, doesn't even need a glowstick). m4inbrain
And so it begins: some of the most important parts (...) arrived today. I can at least now stealthily mount the body i don't have yet to the chassis that i don't have yet either. I'll solder the cap pack to the TV remote for now. 2
m4inbrain
Well, i went from having no drifter, to waiting for delivery on my new RMX 2.5, to now picking up another RMX 2.0 tomorrow as a swap for my Infraction 3s. m4inbrain
Next charge of "stuff" arrived. The shell: Not perfect, as one can see at the front wheel well, the bumper doesn't sit 100% right (protrudes a little bit) - but very happy for £36, looks way better than anything i could whip up on the cheap/quick. First Killerbody, not disappointed. Next, the world tiniest ESC. And i'm not joking. This is the ESC next to a standard sized servo. That's a sensored ESC, missing the fan but the fan is even dinkier. It's absolutely miniscule, and i'm a bit concerned about it lol - never seen such a tiny ESC, already concerned about the power draw lol. I also picked up a used RMX 2.0 that i can't run because there's an issue with my battery, as you can see here: Yeah. Forgot to order one. 2
m4inbrain
Small test fit. The body height isn't final, it already changed since the photos - it sits lower now than on the picture, probably 5mm from wheel to wheel arch. Built the stealth mount on the RMX 2.0, for one reason: Checking wheels 😄 Got a small assortment with the used RMX 2.0, these and a black chrome set. The shell is missing a few pieces (mirror etc) - not mounted yet. Looking at this, i'll probably go with the golden bois, though have to switch tyres between them.
Lone-wolf
coming together, the killerbodies touring shells are very nice, that Alfa shell i have is sweet, so detailed and surprisingly strong, will be sorry to see it go but it has to

And yes, the material is pretty thick, i've seen far flimsier bodies for more money. Pretty happy with that. The parcel from the netherlands (the RMX 2.5, servo and gyro) got slapped with import duty (expected), so now i gotta wait for that stupid letter instead of just letting me know online so i can pay straight away. Grmbl.

Gives me time to shop around for a light kit, whip up something 3d printer-y for a fan mount etc. If i could be bothered, i'd drive 60 miles to the LHS and pick up a battery to run the RMX 2.0 a bit outside (that's the idea - the 2.5 is going to be the nice, carpet one - the 2.0 will be the asphalt one, rough). I can't, though. I just don't understand why they can't send me a bloody email, they got my email address (got an account), so why not just do it that way. I can immediately pay the dues and get my stuff on tuesday, rather than MAYBE getting a letter on tuesday annoying the living daylight out of me for the £12 extra charge.

Ah well. Technically there's no rush, it's just me being impatient and wanting everything yesterday lol.
froggy8
@m4inbrain would this do: https://www.rcjaz.co.uk/intellect-ipcc2s3500sv1100c-74v-100c-3500mah-lipo-battery-p-90069480.html Edited April 7, 2023 by froggy8
m4inbrain
Technically it'd run the RC (if it's a shorty), but it's a bit on the small side - i don't trust those C ratings (for any of the shorties), so higher capacity gives me some piece of mind in regards to the discharge capability. Further, at 3500mah, i'd likely need multiple ones to get through a meet, my hope is that a 5000-6000mah shorty gets me through the entire evening. Why are you asking? 🙂

I've got till the 28th, by then the rig needs to be complete-ish, so within 3 weeks i'll certainly be able to get something sorted. Weather doesn't really allow for the RMX anyway (floor's damp, the electrics aren't weatherproof and it's stupid low). I've got an eye on a 5800mah 120C pack, could have it wednesday if i'd so desire (modelsport) - but as mentioned.. There's no rush, family stuff over the weekend anyway etc. I do very much appreciate the offer though, thanks.
Lone-wolf
I have a 5000 2s deans shortie 100-120C with pull out wires, kinda thinking could loan it ya but pain posting i got it from banggood and it was only about £19 you may be able to get on in time as they seem pretty quick on shipping might not arrive in time https://uk.banggood.com/ZOP-Power-7_4V-5000mAh-120C-2S-Lipo-Battery-T-Deans-Plug-Hard-Case-for-RC-Car-p-1759249.html?cur_warehouse=CN&rmmds=search

Have you charged it from 0 to 100 or something - what real capacity do they have? The price certainly is appealing. As mentioned to froggy, i'm not in a hurry, so cheers - but no need to get one immediately (especially as a loaner considering the added premium in price for posting LiPos that aren't connected to "a device"). Again, appreciate the offer though.
Lone-wolf
not charged 1-100 but i would say it is a 5000mah, takes about right amount of time to charge if that makes sense, not saying its brilliant but it seems to do the job well for the price
