Xray XT2C 21 build thread. Budget stadium truck for racing.

Only done the transmission so far, went together nicely, the diff is much better than my Schumacher buggies and it includes a 3 plate slipper in the box. The top shaft has some scuffs and a bit of sanding was needed on some plastic parts but nothing major. The biggest issue is Xray use different types of bearing in different places (oiled or greased, different seal types) and its not completely clear which one is which.

 

 

Electronics plan is as follows:

• Futaba Rx to go with my current system
• Hobbwing 10bl120
• Banggood surpass 8.5t motor (still waiting on this)
• Xpert RC SI-4431 servo (There aren't many brushless servos designed for 6V so trying one of these out)
• 2S short batteries that I already own

 

I've got a set of xray wheels as I've read Schumacher and Associated ST wheels rub, haven't picked any tyres yet.

Managed to finish this car today, getting any spare time in August is so difficult with family visits etc.

Bodyshell is Tamiya transparent orange over silver, with left over cans for stripes. Really like the metallic effect from the orange, I'll be using this method on other shells in the future. Another negative point for Xray is they don't include masks or stickers for the headlights, hence the painted version. I think they turned out okay.

 

Electronics are all in, pretty snug using a 10bl120 so the rx is on its side, the chassis has a milled out area for the electronics but its smaller than it could be, the '22 model Xray cars have improved this.

 

 

Body shell reinforcements, hoping this will last a while as it was meant to be a cheaper car.

 

 

In this picture you can see my DIY reinforcement for the front body mount, the DIY bumper and velcro pad for the body to stop it rattling.

 

 

All these parts are made from HDPE, very easy to work with and bend with a hair dryer or hair straightners. My own skills let me down when countersinking the holes, if its rips through I'll splash out on some flange head bolts and make a new a new bumper. My only regret is buying a 3mm sheet rather than 2mm or 4mm, it makes finding the correct length screws more difficult.

 

 

Final modification is some extended endstops for the steering knuckles, the kits ones let the steering go too far so the wheels rub on the arms. I didn't fancy relying on EPA of the servo without a servo saver so made these. I've also got Schumacher ball ends on but might swap these back, they were for another solution. The other geometry issues this car has is the camber link hits the top deck at full suspension compression and full steering lock, from looking on Facebook and RCtech this doesn't seem to cause any durability issues but I'm not impressed. To solve it would require a new front shock tower and deck which is a bit beyond me.

 

 

 

I went with JC racing tyres in hard compound for general purpose use, they should be fine for grass and astro. As a bonus they have the classic stadium truck look down.

 

 

 

Overall I'm pleased with the kit for £200 but its put me off buying any other Xray products at full price, I know the truck will always be slightly comprised from the buggy design but there's a few too many issues with this kit to justify the £50 premium over a Schumacher or the £20 over an Associated kit. It'll be next weekend before it gets driven in anger, maybe it'll redeem itself on track.

Gave this a shakedown at Junction16 on Friday night. Really great to drive, made me forget the build issues. The astro setup I've got on it at the moment struggled with some of the jumps but I was surprised how well it corners. Here's a video of the buggy A final to show the track, I only ran the truck during practice.
