Upgraded TT-02 or something else..

Hi All,

Having just bought my sons TT-02 Cars for xmas, I am slightly jealous, and contemplating treating myself.

I was pondering the idea of getting a bare chassis, and adding my own (brushless) ESC and Motor, and doing a host of the usual upgrades to drivetrain, suspension, steering that are available from a number of sources.

So, I could start with TT-02, TT-02S or TT-02R, and add my own bits. (Not sure which works out cheapest/less wasteful)

Or, considering how much that will cost, is there something that might be better value, and maybe better overall, long term.

I'm not looking for a competition car, just a fun tarmac runner.

Eg, I wondered about the HPI Racing RS4 Creator Chassis.

I'd prefer a kit, or at least something I can build myself, rather than full RTR.

Needs to be durable, and easily repaired, including getting spares.

HPI spares can take a while to get in 2 weeks usally, the rs4 looks like a solid bit of kit and if i didnt have a speedie touring car already id get that.
Another consideration whilst not a kit car, the ftx banzai is a decent cheap road / touring car with readily available spares, I've yet to break mine even flipping it at over 100mph.
You should strip it out the box to oil and grease the diffs right, sevo is weak sauce and should be upgraded too so you would be rebuilding it youself so to speak.
Keep in mind you will need some decent wheels and tires as it only comes with hard plastic drift wheels and it doesnt like to take diffrent bodies with ease due to the height of the front shock tower.
If the hpi spares were better stocked i would say the rs4 kit. Better shocks, stronger sealed drive train, more gearing choices etc.

I ticked 2 boxes when I opted for the TT-02. One was owning a Tamiya, as for me it’s the backbone of rc and as a child remember dreaming of owning one. The other, impractical as they are having such limited use (smooth, hard, blemish free surfaces only) they just look superb on the shelf. Tamiya have a good eye for detail and personally I feel they are the best option for this. Another added bonus is readily available cheap parts and plenty of hop up options.

A possible cheaper option (if you want to risk it) is to look at the second hand market. Lots of these cars have only been shelf queens if not had light use and most people can’t resist the shiny blue bling. Second hand could slash the price considerably and get you an already upgraded chassis.

If you’re anything like me, then building it yourself outweighs saving a few quid, so new is best option. I have one of each. The new one still isn’t hopped up to the standard of the second hand one, but I appreciate and care for the one I built more.

This is one way to go - TT02D chassis:

  • Includes full ball bearings and CVA (oil-filled) Super Mini shocks.
  • Tamiya Sport-Tuned Motor and Aluminium heat sink is included.
  • Hard chassis (grey) parts.

Thanks for that option.

I'd not thought about the drift chassis, but not sure that will save me much, as I'll need new tyres, and planned in going brushless with motor.  I'd then want to replace drive shaft parts with metal ones.

I think I'll need to do a bit of costing up of all the mod's I'd want.

Unless you want to spend £300 plus on a proper TC then the TT02 would be your best bet. You can pick the chassis up for around £50 then spec it however you want.

I certainly don't want to spend £300 on a chassis. (Although I can see hop-ups adding up!)

Getting a bare chassis, and then adding ball bearings, CVA shocks, metal drive shafts and beefing up a few bits of the drive train gets me very close to the cost of the HPI chassis. Which has all those, and metal gearing making it 3S compatible.

I'd still go for a tt02 over the HPI, part support is great and you have pretty much unlimited upgrades.

Any idea where you can get them for around £50? Not finding them currently, and ones on a well known online auction site seem to be going for more..

Shipping is about €20 however you won't pay local tax so it brings the total cost down to around £55

I've ordered twice and it arrived within a week. Im currently selling a set of CVA shocks, brand new if you want them.

The Xpress XQ2S is often recommended as a budget racing touring car. I don't own one but the price is close to a TT02 with some upgrades.

I had seen these, but wondered if they looked a little bit less 'robust' for general carpark/tarmac running. They do look good though.
