Glow plug igniters

New to nitro but not RC although no expert. Bought my first igniter. It's rechargeable.

It seems like I'm supposed to charge it for an unknown large amount of time. Drain it so it's empty and ruins my day before charging it again . No way to check its charge. No way to realise if I'm over charging it. No way to check if it's almost dead before heading out the door. It also gets incredibly hot when charging.

What am I missing?

It's 2021 and battery tech is excellent. Seems a bit outdated to rely on touching it?!

Stick it on  a spare glow plug and see if it glows 🙂

Doesn't tell you how much juice is left in it though does it?  I can only assume people carry several around with them in varying states of charge.

I've now ordered a Prolux Easy Glow to drive off any old battery between 3 and 20v, for example spare car and motorcycle batteries I have kicking around.

No, but would show if it's a duff ignitor. I used to charge mine and would last for ages, all it needs to do is make a bit of wire glow for a few seconds
