Hello from NE

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, my daughter and I are new to RC, she's had many a 'toy' one from shops when she's younger, she's upgraded to an FTX Bugsta Brushless, firstly man this thing in my experience is fast! Luckily we have open spaces to let loose with it. I wss wondering if anyone could suggest any upgrades to the parts such as suspension holders etc as I understand these are designed to fail to minimise damage (currently in shop having 2 front ones replaced) and if anyone could point me in the direction of some decent tutorials as id like to be able to do some basic repairs myself with her so it's not in the shop for days at a time. Hope you're all safe and well in this maddest of times.

Cheers for the welcome, sadly the FTX Bugsta is still in shop (backlog) hopefully it'll be back in a day or 2, have any of you guys upgraded the stock parts to aluminum ones?

Personally I’d avoid aluminium parts. Expensive and if bent, knackered. Plastics might break easier but are cheap as chips to replace. Carbon top plate is worth the money though.

welcome  :)

the trouble with some alloy parts is you are putting the strain of an impact further up the chain so to speak, typically suspension arms should be plastic, but parts like these are fine : https://ftx-rc.com/index.php?_route_=rc-hop-ups/ftx-surge-option-parts/ftx-surge-aluminium-front-c-hub-carrier

or https://ftx-rc.com/index.php?_route_=rc-hop-ups/ftx-surge-option-parts/ftx-surge-aluminium-suspension-arm-lower-braces-fr-rr-4pcs

just using them as an example and have made my surge usable  :)

alloy arms is a no no  :)

plastic will flex whereas alloy will send the force of an impact up to the next weakest bit and also if alloy bends it is even weaker if bent back.

that tool should cover most of what you need, and some normal allen keys for places you cannot directly fit a big straight one and a mini spanner  :)

get some of this https://www.modelsport.co.uk/zap-technology-z-42-thread-locker/rc-car-products/14329

use it on screws that screw into metal threads etc, avoid wheels flying off by dabbing a wee bit into the wheel nut before screwing in, creates a nice tight bind but never use on plastic, plastic doesnt like it, only metal to metal  :)

Welcome to the forum!
There is a really good thread for vantage and carnage owners - the Bugsta is almost identical to the carnage.
I’d agree that most aluminium parts are not a great idea but for the Bugsta I did get the aluminium suspension arm holders: front and rear. The front and rear are different though, so don’t buy two the same!

There are different views on this forum though so I’d check the owner’s thread for advice. I put the aluminium chassis on too, but this is heavier (which makes everything else more likely to break in a crash as noted above). The reason is the front bumper mount screws into a tiny piece of the chassis and so breaks off on the plastic one, in my experience.

The Bugsta is really easy to work on - must be one of the easiest RCs of all to work on. I’d just give it a go - take bits off carefully and put the screws with the part they held and you should be able to reassemble. But there will always be YouTube if you get stuck.

At some point you might want to put a stronger steering servo on as it has big wheels and does steer better with a more powerful one.

Enjoy the Bugsta - it is a fun car.

Cheers yrkoon. Really appreciate that mate, just ordered a few bits and bobs for us including a very similar tool, some spare suspension holders etc, just stuck with plastic for now till we get to grips with it all. Were enjoying it a lot 😁
