HPI savage Flux XL released 18/01/17

HPI to me were like Tamiya Models to the older folk. The older folk looked in Beaties and in the Tamiya Catalogue wanting everything. I did the same looking through the HPI catalogue dreaming of one day having a HPI Proceed that did 70mph! I had a HPI Sport 1 RS4 at the time and went on to have a multitude of HPI models. Im a big fan of HPI and was gutted when they ran into financial problems. However, if all theyve got to offer is an archaic Savage and some Q32 toys then maybe they should just stay gone...

I anticipated this exact reply.... Yet aren't Traxxas doing something about the Xmaxx for example,  adding the fuse wire (lol) initially within a few months of release? Now we have an 8S upgrade pack within the year. The Savage has been around one and half decades and HPI havent addressed ANY of it....

That's more an exception to the rule. Both Traxxas and HPI are at fault. Selling any product where the first consumer advice is to immediately replace even a single part just to use that product within its designed limits is wrong.

What about those new bulletproof diffs every one bangs on about on the savage wasn't that sorted  or have I missed something not really being a fan I can't say I've followed it much but I'm sure there has been loads of changes to it

I wonder if Traxxas will address the same amount over the next 16 years or whatever the savage has been around for ? I mean come on how long they been dishing out the slash for with those crap driveshafts ?

8s upgrade kit no one wants as its a bloody rip off that kit you mean?  the one muggins here bought ;)  Fuse wire indeed if that's the best they can do well they know where that's going ?  Along with the massive beefed up Axles with that huge 0.5mm  extra thick pin worth all of 20pence but hey will charge you £20 a corner you mean these fantastic new upgrades oh yeah very nice lol

Yeah way to to go Traxxas thanks for that you really well and truly ripped I mean fixed me up . :good:

I like my Maxx a lot and I mean a lot but sugar coat it or Traxxas I won't sorry

Here's a video for the older folk,

I could be in that category as seem to have a few Savages still and dont follow latest trends for stupid power where it self destructs and not usable. Bigger isnt always better. Usable power better than more power.

Glad to see it back but those wheel nuts, really! Shame on you hpi for being so cheap and lazy. A few extra pounds spent in production could have meant so much. And the shell could have done with some thought at least.

Similar on the Trophy truggy I just went to 17mm hex hubs instead, from what I gather you can do the same on this for about £30 plus a shell £30 total upgrade package £60 bargian compared to dare I say a Traxxas lol

All joking aside I get where you guys are coming from though they could have made a change here or there but maybe they thought the didn't need to as like other companies out there they have upgrades out for those areas ?

They NEED this to work to get them back out there. I dont get why they wouldnt make some minor changes and smash the market. A sorted Savage XL Flux is great. But this isnt even a true XL, it has no axles and not even the Gigante shell. I dont get it. HPI's genuine Flux XL Conversion that was avaliable as a hop up YEARS ago comes with the axles, why doesnt the truck?

http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/102404

To me, they wanted to get a product out asap to get some money back, which is completely understandable.... buut the parts already exist in HPI's inventory!

saying that add buy this and add:

17mm kit (£26)

XL Axles (£30)

HD 18/23 gear (£12)

Gigante Shell (£30)

RRP Gen 3 Slipper (£35)

Integy HD Rear hubs (£35)

And youre there. The TVPs are still 2.5mm mind. The parts are avaliable and any weakness are known so...

114341 is the upgrade hex bodge (I mean mod). I switched my Trophy after snapping 5 axles with that same stupid nut using Doddy's you tube vid.

Still got a chance of snapping the Savvy axle with the hex mod, don't do the nut too tight and a **** load of threadlock

Aww guys, i was honestly thinking about getting this thing since my introduction to "proper" RC was with an HPI truggy, and i'm in the market for a MT now - of which there's not many to chose from in this size class.

I actually only know three: the XMaxx, the LST XXL2E and this one. I don't want a Traxxas, and apparently this one's *****. The Cen Reeper looks fun, but part availability might (will) be an issue, and judging by my non-existent MT driving skills, that's an issue for me too.

Leaves the Losi, which apparently blows up (exaggerated for dramatic effect) every time you put a 6s battery in the same room. I do understand that things will break under 6s, that's just how it is, but 4s in a big truck is just.. meh.

No ones said its ****. It isnt ****.  I believe it need those mods which will cost £100ish. I also think the fact its been out for years means these mods should have been addressed by now on a truck that the distributor NEEDS to be a success, As others have pointed out tho, that £100 of mods is alot less than it tales to sort other models out ( the xMaxx for example, a proper esc costs that).

Im sure youd be over the moon with the Savage XL, im just very dissapointed with this version, not because its rubbish, but because I built the exact same thing using the exact same HPI parts 4 years ago. The fact its 'old' could be a positive, because others have said it means all the issues are known.

The Xmaxx isnt really a comparison to the losi or the Savage however mate. The X is MUCH bigger and doesnt really have an electric rival mHeres my Xmaxx with My Savage Flux XL. My Flux XL is bigger than the new HPI one as I have true XL axles and offset Trencher X wheels so its a good few inches wider.  Same length though.

Okay, should've said "above 55ish cm in length". I knew that the XMaxx is considerably bigger than the XL/Losi, purely because it's a 1/5th, rather than.. Well, no idea what the Losi really is. They say 1/8th, but at around 70cm, it seems more like a 1/7th to me.

I've followed the XMaxx, lets say, "history" here on MSUK from the beginning, when pre-orders weren't shipped yet. I love the way it looks, and obviously there's no other RC car with the presence of a 1/5th MT. But that pretty much is it already for me. Not talking it down, and i know that pretty much no RC comes perfect out of the box, but the XMaxx took that "motto" to a different level, especially considering prices for stuff. To me personally, the XMaxx was a ballsy experiment, which (again, just imho - not talking yours down) failed. At least in regards to what i seek in the hobby.

In the end, it's like with actual cars. A 35 year old golf isn't exactly "proven technology". If i buy a car today, especially for a decent amount of money, i'd like to feel/see the advancements made in the last (in this case) 15 years. That doesn't seem to be the case, dropping around £600 just to get something that was "outdated" already ten years ago.. Meh. I assumed that HPI would've done a bit more effort. I expected like a weird space bug thingy underneath the shell like the Arrma Nero or something.

Out of date?

Against what?

The savage has proven electrics, a million and one aftermarket parts, on 6s it goes like a stabbed rat what else are people after?

What do you 'seek' from this hobby? Theres not much difference between a Savage XL and Xmaxx in terms of what you can do with them. Theyre both quite similar in a way (xmaxx is a bigger and slower version but makes up for it in theatre, the Savage is just mental and funny). I sold my XL because I preferred using the Xmaxx. Thats all, but when youre using them there isnt much difference so if the XL is what you seek in the hobby, so is the XMaxx but more so imo?

ive spent this thread slagging this Savage off, mainly because of what it couldve been with the readily avaliable parts. Id still take it over anything other than perhaps a Revo or a XXL2e. Id certainly be buying the Savage XL over anything Arrma

sell.

I don't see the need to explain myself when i say that the XMaxx doesn't offer what i want in an RC, at least stock. That's just my opinion, if you like yours, all good. On 8s it might, but then there's the small problem of it being £1400, and that's not looking at repairs and maintenance afterwards. Neither am i willing nor capable of dropping that on an RC, hehe.

Not really the thread for it here though (but feel free to PM me if needed).

Put it this way. I'm in the market for a MT, i'm looking at the XXL2e and this one. Why, apart from the looks, would i go for the XL?

edit: again, i actually thought that they'd improved on the design to accommodate the torque/power of the tork system.

The Losi has a few flaws always has allways will but only in its brushless configurations  as it just gets to much power to the drive train .. Diff casings !!! they crack loosen the cup instide destroy the outer ring and pinion and eat the outdrives cup, the slipper can't handle the brushlees power so it lets go all the time .. is there a solution  no are parts tricky to find this side of the pond yes and it's a mix of imperial ad metric would I personally ever buy another not if you paid me with the weight of the truck in gold ..

But hey your right you want an MT that offers good value for money has good parts support dosen't require you to remortgage your house to correct and factory flaws isn't expensive is the right size to have fun with, needs to be fast, strong and reliable

Which is what most guys require when looking for an RC, not really much to ask for all things considered

Now here's the thing if and I mean if you ever find one and the Losi or the savage or the Hyper MT or the X Maxx and the others guys have metioned  aren't it as they all have flaws and need X amount spent ... Please will you let me know as I'd love one my self ;)
