My take on a Rat Rod..

Thanks to Tamiya Cowboy who donated this Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin shell, so I had to find something to do with it and the Alfa Guila M06 I had was donated to the project, once I changed chassis to short wheelbase it all lined up perfectly although to get body sat low enough at rear I had to chop out bed, and make new section higher up.

I had planned to do a rat rod with a truck Im working on at the moment but that hasn't happened so I went with this as the rat rod. The body was primered, then painted white, then primer and then a coat of ford pacific blue. I then set about sanding away through the coats to give a much used look. The rust is Deluxe Scenic Rust and is a kit that includes iron filings (very fine) and a rhin white glue (I think its watered down PVA) that you mix together then apply to the item you want rusting. After this dries you brush on the included blue fluid that must be an oxidising fluid... 8 or so hours later the rust has mostly developed.

Im really happy with the result, the bed load will be altered its just like that at moment to hide the raised area to clear M06 suspension.

In the last photo it is sat on back of my mates, King Hauler recovery truck... the rear bed is motorised and slides back and angles to allow trucks/cars be winched aboard.

Although, wouldn't it make sense to fit some corroded-looking wheels to finish the theme? Or is it because "rat look" doesn't necessarily mean old and neglected, and owners still buy fancy alloy wheels? Obviously I'm aware owners of rat look vehicles rust their cars on purpose, I just assumed that would incorporate scabby wheels as well?

that is sweet, but agree with the wheels looking to new, and the rear bed, fill it will hay with a net over lol. ala old western farm truck.

Yup that's the look I was aiming for, the wheels still need chrome centre caps but can't find any thing suitable at moment

Is that MP shell standard (no cutting and shutting)?

The shell is basically standard the only cut I did was to remove bed floor and put a flat plasticard sheet higher up to allow me to lower shell over chassis. Wheelbase, track etc are all unmodified

Pimped the ride dear fellow,

 

when i gave biggus the shell it was a state bashed up dirty and really had a rough time

now it looks 1000 time better than it did way back.

 

its wicked i love the low ride chop, and top top work on the paint and effect, you could get any more life like.

 

keep up the work buddy . am not sure if its any help but i have found up three original yellow wide wheel rims.

will hunt for the fourth, maybe possible to cut and shut them to a more vintage style.

Question: how durable is the rust effect? Having ideas for revamping our blackfoot shells, but if the effect wears off with bashing, then it's not for us.

I think for hard wearing use it wouldn't be great as it is, but maybe with a matt or satin lacquer it would be ok.   I have a tub of Tamiya satin lacquer so I will do you a test piece over next day or two.

Very decent of you, thanks. I did wonder about a satin coat on top, just, if it doesn't work, then a sad monkey I shall be, with much lamenting of a ruined shell....lol

I have given it a go and painted up the white walls.   Also found some chrome caps that work as hubcaps (22mm chrome button covers from local craft shop)

I promised this a while back, for Noj,  this is some of rust kit done on a piece of plasticard then the top half was painted in satin lacquer.

I think a matt lacquer would work better....the satin leaves more of a sheen than I expected.....however, I think this kit will work for what i have planned.
