I was very tempted by those shells when I was picking mine out.

Any idea what you’ll need to do to get it running yet?

Ive bought a receiver (£40) yesterday for my NB4. The plan was to put this in my XRT. That would give me the XRT radio for this. But I think I wanna keep the XRT on a separate RX/Tx. So my Mrs can use it when I use my X Maxx (which is on my NB4). Either way I have a radio and servo. It has a motor so It could run with just an ESC say a Hobbywing 1060. I’ll probably buy a brushed motor for it mind, nothing mental. Then god knows. Theres no budget as such, but its a 24 year old Tamiya I bought to be nostalgic.

However, as Im posting here:

TL01 was technically £68 before vouchers

RX £40

£98 to go…..

Just spent £59.97 on:

A Hobbywing 1060 ESC

A 21T Cheap Motor & Proper Pinion

A rounded Lipo, shaped like the old stick packs.

Deans Connectors, Deans Lipo Charge Lead and even genuine Tamiya Body Clips

Some more creative financial play going on here. Nothing to see.

Ive decided not to use the Core 21T motor. So thats £9.99 off. Take off the battery which was £19.99 too.

So Im at £137.98

Ive then sold £56.49 of bits on ebay. Which cost me £8.90 to post so. £47.59 on sales. Leaves me at £90.39

However Ive spent £88.42 on Plaza Japan (inc postage).

TRF Shocks. Im a shock snob!
Tamiya BZ Motor. I was never gonna be happy with a Core budget motor
Rally Block Tyres x 4

I also spent £5.99 on correct 3x14mm Set Screws as mine has after market ones.

So…..

£184.80.

Not bad. Even if I include the Lipo

Any advice on how I can make a start setting up a budget rally?

Completely new to RC, but a recent purchase of Pro4 SC10 has gotten me hooked.

Looking on ebay for a chassis just brings up lots of letters and numbers following the word Tamiya..

Tips on whats good and whats not would be helpful!

I dont think the TT-02 is a bad choice, BUT those are expensive used ones IMO. Ive had plenty of TT01/2’s and theyre solid. Theres probably a better choice, but considering they dont have a  shell or wheels, you can get new for.

This has some good option parts but youd need a shell and rally tyres

This isnt a bad start either

Im not saying these are perfect choices. But showing those used ones are quite expensive.

Flick through this thread, youll see a few great ideas.

with Tamiyas you usually have to factor in cost of a bearing kit as they come with plastic bushings and also usually plastic friction shocks

Maybe i'd be out of my depth just jumping straight in.

I'll see if i can do a bit of reasearch, it may be Youtube tonight

What is the main difference between a touring car / drift setup and a rally spec?

Ridge height & wheels & tyres?

At this budget level, Ride Height and tyres are the main set up changes. Obviously a Rally orientated bodyshell is a nice touch too.

Going off topic, theres a lot more to a drift car, so some high level ones are barely recognisable to a touring car. I suggested the drift TT02 as it has some oil shocks and bearings as standard which are necessary upgrades.

My TL-01 isnt even running yet!!

Point me in some sort of direction… 😂 where do I start..

Have a watch of Mark Bryan too:

I'm leaning extremely heavily toward a TT-02.

I also found myself dragged along to the hop-up side of things.

Besides shocks and bearings, is there anything else that may be worth upgrading straight up? lots of nice looking blue & red aluminium parts.

I want to join the silver can gang but I’m not sure how to budget this?

I’m using a TT02 I’d planned to use for speed runs (never got past 40mph before crashing) which has just been sat on the shelf for a year or so.

image.thumb.jpg.9c6f88b70bf32a4524cb6e4593c99520.jpg

I think the original kit cost £120?

At the time I got a couple of hop ups, a bearing kit, and metal drive shaft kit, as well as a high speed spur gear and a set of oil damped shocks £100?? I honestly don’t remember.
Servo is also recycled, but was about £25 when it was new.

An extra RX £18 (but no new TX so not adding that to budget).

Add another £20 (?) for paint

So that’s about £275+…..Well over the £200 limit.

But it’s all pre-loved, so how much of it do I count it all toward the budget?

The only real cost this has incurred are £16 for a set of cheapo wheels with rally blocks fitted and £10 on a Kamtec chassis cover.

It currently has a brushless combo in it but I’ll swap that for brushed motor I already have and I definitely have a Tamiya ESC although I’m sure I have an old HW1060 somewhere too? “Torque tuned” still counts as a silver can right?image.thumb.jpg.737b566a564564d40b187e8a6816d00a.jpg

The shell is a fictional car that Tamiya made up. I might replace it with something more “rally” at some point. Possibly an Escort Mk1 shell from Kamtec?
In the meantime all I’ve done is trim off the front splitter to help with ground clearance and a light trim round the wheel arches to accommodate the new tyres.

I’ve given the chassis the “Mark Bryan” treatment and got some extra ground clearance.

Just have to swap out the electrics. Chassis cover due to arrive tomorrow and I’m good to go 👍

Im intriuged , what shell is that?

It’s called the Raikiri. Means something cool to do with swords I think?

It wasn’t my first choice but I got it during one of the lockdowns. When everyone had decided to buy a RC car so everything was out of stock. I quite like it tbh but perhaps not as a rally car.20580A1C-0408-4A09-8A30-A6B1CFE6085F.thumb.png.b2a337840fc9d0348f70058ca5c03ce3.png

Swapped the brushless motor for a brushed one and took it for a test drive. Handled really well and had me grinning like an idiot.
So much more useable than it was before.
Slower obviously but there’s something quite relaxing about 2S on a brushed motor, didn’t crash once.😁

Really pleased with the Kamtec chassis cover I got. Kept everything nice and clean.

Will shorten those motor/ESC wires (maybe solder them direct?) and put a deans plug on instead of that adaptor. Tidy everything up a bit.

But basically, for a relatively small outlay, it feels like I have a new car. Really pleased. 👍

pretty cool mate :good:

is this the 1 you greased up the difs on ?

Yes. I’m really chuffed. It’s just been sat on the shelf for about a year.
I’d made it pretty unusable 🤦‍♂️

4000kv brushless system on 3s with slick tyres. Needed lots of space and the slightest bump would see it cart wheeling at 35mph.

Now it’s much easier to use and it’s a giggle
