raff113
hi guys going to be soldering some deans connectors and I'm wondering which soldering iron to get , i don't want to spend loads around
ostewart
40w is just fine and general solder is good. Maplin is a good place to go, or ebay. I use this solder: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140986939286?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&var=440131589954&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Flux helps a lot if you can get some: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Solder-Paste-to-Avoid-Dry-Joints-40g-Buy-2-Get-1-Free-Offer-/251809262158?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3aa1006a4e Iron: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverline-Soldering-Iron-40W-for-Electrical-Electronics-Wiring-/321672053604?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4ae5260364

Oh How Original
I personally use a 30W Draper, I do need a hotter one though but it's fine for things like Deans plugs... Takes a bit to heat up bigger stuff like 5.5mm+ bullets. I'd also higher recommend Weller solder, best stuff I've used and won't be switching from it anytime soon. atom3624
I'm certain that your need and curiosity are genuine. This same question is raised perhaps once every month. There are loads of opinions, options and answers if you SEARCH the previous threads. Al.

That goes for any forum I've ever been a part of, not just this one. Didn't mean to be harsh ... 30W for lighter stuff. 80W for high power bullets. I'm no expert, have just needed to solder. 60W for me just wasn't enough for some jobs. Al.

fornowagain
I'm a great believer in the right tool for the right job. I have a digital soldering iron for IC work, very small bits etc. A Weller W100 series with magnastat temp controlled, brilliant for large jobs as it will keep pumping heat but won't overtemp and damage the bit. The Weller is as old as me, belonged to my dad. Solder, I've always used RS components multicore leaded solder, has the flux built in and flows brilliantly. I'll throw in one suggestion if you're not using the iron much and want to get some use from it. Take a look at a Dremel VersaTip, it's a gas torch that come with various bits. I recently bought one and found it very useful, it has a good range of control. Easily powerful enough for largest gauge wire and EC5 connectors and you can swap the tip and use it as a warm air blower for heatshrink, or swap the tip for a plastic cutter and make nice clean cuts on cable wrap. Works well. Edited February 25, 2015 by fornowagain
raff113
right while waiting for the postman to deliver my items i decided id cut old connector off battery and strip it ready, so cut the black wire then the red and it sprung back and hit the black and then sparks only for a second but enough to make me jump , just hope the battery aint damaged . atom3624
What type of battery is it? NiMH, LiFe, LiPo? Done it myself, once, with a NiMH - no problem. Did a few years ago with a LiPo - very, very short time - and nearly fused the contacts together!! Still, no problem. Main thing, one at a time, and insulate / tape them whilst waiting - sure you have now anyway! Al.
raff113
it was lipo , yea all done taped the 1 while done the other , only thing is i wished i had one of them helping hand things to hold the deans connector and wire while i soldered
ostewart
Yeah a helping hands really is essential for this type of soldering and they are cheap
ibo
I have used one these for a while now with no probs at all, shop around though you can get cheaper.. http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-50w-solder-station-n78ar
smeghead28
I have a couple of irons. One is a Weller 80w which has a huge tip and it good for bullet type connectors but not much else as it is just too big. There is a smaller 6mm tip available but I have just never bought one. I also have a 40w iron I bought from work for smaller stuff if I ever need it.
