Si Coe
Keep the brushless really mild (13.5t or something like that) because the gears aren't that strong, and replacements are hard to sort. Otherwise though its a great car!
djyjrlz
Yeah, wasn't planning anything mad, just something to put around outside that i wouldn't be afraid of breaking
djyjrlz
IT FINALLY ARRIVED! So, first impressions, lightly run car that seems all original. Has a mabuchi motor (upgraded?) and a mechanical speed control... Tires are in great condition and overall i'm impressed. so i gave it a quick blast with the stock setup. Very tame. i had a brushed esc and a small lipo kicking about... so out came the mech speed control and in went the novak gtx after 5 minutes running it's gone pop and stopped moving. motor was still spinning under throttle so part of the driveline gave up. after a quick check it's the dogbone that's snapped, so i'll be on the hunt for a pair of metal ones

djyjrlz
Harsh Ahh well, it's all part of the hobby i suppose. found some suitable replacements on ebay, they're 70mm hsp metal ones for
Noj
Luckily you've sourced replacement parts.... Bl could kill it, which would be a shame.. Retro FTW!
djyjrlz
I've had a few over the years, nothing quite like a floppy chassis and pogo stick suspension.
Noj
Think this thread needs moving to the vintage section
djyjrlz
ahh, i didn't know we had one Took a couple of years out of the hobby so i must've missed it.
djyjrlz
Well, i've ordered some replacement steel shafts, but in the mean time i wanted to try and make something that would do. so i cut some longer spares down and epoxyd them into some copper brake pipe. here's the broken piece. Cut a spare dogbone down And epoxied it into the pipe. I'll let it cure and take it for a spin!
djyjrlz
Ahh crikey, must've forgotten to update this thread. Ok so the little bodge with the driveshaft worked for a while.. and then my parts turned up. I sourced a couple of steel driveshafts from HSP (not that keen but they were the right size) Which luckily popped right in with the right amount of lash. While i was there i might as well rebuild the gearbox and see if i can swap in a faster but less torquey motor, So in went a lightly used mabuchi motor from one of my boxes of bits. here's the photos of the gearbox rebuild and clean, what i found was a nice surprise, very lightly used gears and good clean grease, meaning it's probably had much less running than i first expected. On the operating table. Gearbox ready to come out Then cleaned, maintained and refitted. seems alien to me not to scrub the rest of the car clean but it was getting late and i needed to be up for work in the morning. Gave it about an hours running and it's much quieter with some of the added shims. Next job is to pull it apart again and clean the chassis/suspension and then upgrade the steering as it's really shockingly poor for a 2wd... NITO
I had a Kyosho Turbo Optima as a kid. Great car except the front upright kept snapping every time it went out. I ended up trading it for a Hotshot, but the Optima was the best looking buggy I ever had. I think I saw somewhere that they may be re-releasing one? Cheers Nito
djyjrlz
They've re tooled some of their old kits and rumour has it they're going to be doing a line of the most popular ones just like tamiya has done. if that's the case i'm on the lookout for a nitro usa-1. AndySeven
They've re tooled some of their old kits and rumour has it they're going to be doing a line of the most popular ones just like tamiya has done. if that's the case i'm on the lookout for a nitro usa-1. I don't need retro re-tools I just need time to refurbish what I have. A few years back I bought a bunch of spares and upgrades so it's just the time I lack. By the way I raced Ultimas and Optimas back in the 80's and they were tougher than most but if you are going to bounce them off of curbs they are going to break. Here's my fleet waiting to be worked on.
djyjrlz
So as a bit of a gravedigger bump i finally have something to update this thread with, been out the hobby again for another year as bigger cars got in the way. but i've just bought another old kyosho on ebay. An Old rs200 model with the os10 motor i'll get some pictures up in a bit!
djyjrlz
one broken body mount, tattered shell and a very poorly OS 10 engine. but by a stroke of luck i have a kyosho gxr 15 engine ready to drop in. Low compression and poorly crank bushing have spelled the end for this little mill
djyjrlz
Decided to rob the engine from the alpha i have and put the gxr in that. the little gx12 is perfectly suited the power needs of the rs200 too so it made sense so with minimal fettling i've got it all working!
