Hyper's Axial SCX10 Jeep Rubicon Kit Build

HYPER-BOY

Recommended Posts

So finally jumped in and got my first ever out the box kit to build... Opening the box I was surprised with the amount of parts.

Having to build this at my Grandparents to keep my missus from seeing what I am buying (lol)....

Laid all out on the table, can see this taking a while!

This is the grand sum of what I have done so far, can see right off the bat the parts I want to hop up, hubs, skid plates and Y-Link.. And maybe the shocks, they seem quite small.. Will have to look into that.

As for further upgrades I'm going to keep researching, I also need to get an ESC and motor, looking at Tekin, Novak and Holmes Hobbies combo's.  Think the HH one is what I might go for.

So, me being me and being very impatient, I didn't take any pics of the rest of the build lol.. I got that engrossed in it I just finished it.  Whilst I wait for the stuff from Amain to come I went to Wheelspin and got a HPi esc and 35T Motor (only

I'm still in love with mine too, to the point it's due for another change of looks. With a new shell and colour change, new wheels and tyres and a winch. Oh and i plan on buying a roller and building a 6x6 winching rig lol.

I've got a new esc on the way for mine, and once it's in, it'll be getting a dollop of silicone where the wires enter the rx box.

Once this shell is cracked and scratched I'll buy a new 'best' shell for it..  6x6 sounds good, bet they climb like nothing else lol..

Yeah think I will dollop some silicone in the gap and see how I get on with that.  Hate to fry the rx as they are about

You'll find that the cage does alot to protect it and the quality of the lexan on the Axial shells is some of the better stuff i've come across.

I've not cracked my rtr Jeep shell yet, but have managed rip a wing mirror and the windscreen off lol. They'll take a battering too and usually bounce away from rolls from the top of a hill or pile of rocks and still drive perfectly :)

Thb, the rx boxes are near waterproof anyway, i've had mine submerged a few times and only found the odd drop of water in there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just found some Killer RC Led's hanging around from the old Baja so added them in.  They actually look really good and work in the dark a treat!  Question is, will they have major draw on the battery?  Also they are plugged direct into Aux 1 and Aux 2 on the receiver via the usual blade connector... Should I be able to program the TX to turn them off and on etc??

They are running off the BEC which is 6v, but this powers the steering servo too so would that take power away from that?  As for the amperage, I think about 5 amps?

Nice build, those front lights look awesome, need to get some lights for mine asap with the dark nights now.

I too thought I wouldn't like this side of the hobby but it's very addictive. My SCX10 is one of my favourite rc's now. All my other rc's are racers, I'd still like to add a basher to the family but there's just too much choice.

Yeah it felt mad to go out with 3 x 2s lipo's and literally have a full day out RC'ing! All at a nice slow pace too..

Think the light's do draw some power but maybe cut times by minutes and not hours.

Yeah it's great fun, I run mine on a 4200mah 2S lipo, that last me at 1 1/2 - 2 hours and I've two of them. I could run longer but that uses just over half the mah.

I'll be powering my lights off of a separate lipo when I fit them

Going to add headlights and tail lights so will power the whole lot off a separate lipo too..  Good excuse to get more weight in there too! :)

I've picked up a second battery tray to mount the lights lipo in the rear. I'll be using a light 1S lipo which is spare from my GT12. I don't want to add too much extra weight on the chassis. I'd rather just add weight in the wheels as that's low cog weight opposed to high cog weight.

I was watching a video on youtube, he used lead fishing line to wrap around the inside the wheel, I'll be trying that too.

That's a good idea tbf, most my weight is middle to low and it climbs real well.. Might try that lead line idea though.

Just a little update, raided Asiatee's and got a few new little additions.

First up - Thought I'd try out some 100mm Boomerang internal shocks, for the price it's worth a punt. I'm keeping this SCX10 to a budget and not going mad..

IMG_2238.jpg

Added a few alloy bits, steering linkage, c hubs, knuckle arms etc.

IMG_2239.jpg

Metal Gearbox and full metal gears inc Spur.

The shocks are quite good to be honest, they offer good flex, squat nicely to lower the COG.. I'm not moaning for the price. Got to mess with the shock oil and spring rates to get it perfect. Decent

Yeah those shocks are a pain to get oil and spring rate right. But very good once sorted. I went with medium springs, and 27.5wt oil. Soft springs give you a full droop setting, medium gave me some up travel, with just as good articulation.

Very smooth shocks, but the gold comes off the shafts very quickly.
