Very impressed with the 2 new apprentice's today. Today's task was rebuilding hub reductions on a dummy axle. Both really got stuck in but need a little more time in the gym. 50kg gear sets just didn't happen for them. Lol.
-
Should be an interesting day tomorrow, I'm on the interview panel for my replacement. Well the apprentice I will train to take my role in about 5 years. Really impressed that 3 young ladies have made it to face to face stage too. Very few female mechanics in the truck world.

Well it was an interesting day. Very shocked that 4 candidates didn't even bother to turn up. Their loss. Those who did turn up were very impressive. Very close call so 2 have been invited for a practical assessment, I've got a feeling both will be offered a place. I am very happy to train either of them as they appear to have a good attitude to the job.

Broke my own rule and now I'm kicking myself. Used a new brand of masking tape today without trying first. Paint bled under ruining hours of work. Furious with myself.
-
So after 3 weeks building a custom body on a 1:1 recovery truck for a customer it was delivered today. Just had a call it's been written off on its first job. Wounded is not the word.
-
Really shocked by the poor service from Asiatees. Never had issue before but with this order it's been terrible.
-
Well that fantastic. One shift left before our next family holiday and I've done my back again lifting a shackle from the wrecker.
-
Oh the joys of adblue and agency drivers. 150ltrs of adblue in the red diesel tank for the fridge engine. Fuel system ruined and maybe even the engine due to cylinder damage.

"Agencies" I hear you say? My mates wife is a nurse, being short staffed they need agency nurses, but had a genuinely bright idea that goes as follows; "if you work your full week of shifts, you can then work weekends and we'll pay you what an agency would charge us".
She gets the full 400 per shift, that's 800 notes for a weekend!
-
First short shift down. Could get used to 4 hour days. Not so keen on the back ache now though.
-
Oh dear. The Tamiya bug has biten me hard. Too many hours sat in various hospital waiting rooms seems to have lead to me buying a 3rd Tamiya truck.
-
Totally fed up now. Being stuck at home with my bad back taken the opportunity to order a few odds and ends. Royal fail strike again and seem to lost it all. Ordered a new model from Model sport and I've no idea who packed it but most of the extras I've ordered have fallen out the naff packing on route and the box is destroyed, so waiting on that resolve and to top it all off DHL have lost my daughters 17th birthday present now.

Just fabulous, been nursing a couple of bulging discs in my back for months, simple sneeze and I've ruptured one. Worst pain I've experienced, waiting on the surgeon now.

What is it you do, manual trade of some sort?
I had to make some lifestyle changes, sold my track car as it just punished my back (lowered adjustable coilovers, bucket seats, cage, harnesses - essentially not a lot of give) and track days went out the window. Up the excercise routine and play squash once a week (this came later thlugh) to try and keep it all moving. I have a desk job which isn’t great for the back anyway. I turned heavily back to RC’s for a couple of years as a bit of a coping system/distraction as I couldn’t enjoy any of the other hobbies.
Some people resolve after about 6 weeks, I wasn’t one of those, hopefully yours will be a quick recovery although it sounds like you have a few discs shot like me, in some respects, without a ruptured disc you wouldn’t have known that your back has been abused so, at least now you're young enough to make lifestyle changes and do something positive about it. My specialist said that basically things wear out, if you’re a runner you’ll wear you knees out, the more you abuse any joint the more it wears, like a car suspension, if you are on rough terrain with pot holes it’ll wear the shock absorber out faster. Hence why our discs are shot. At the point of rupture it is usually something stupid that triggers it, mine was putting an RC car on the floor, I was rotating as I bent down which is a no no, bend the knees!! I’d always had a strong back so its quite a blow spending three years not being able to do all the things you take for granted, like picking the kids up and carrying them to bed and stuff.
You’ll get there, it’s a question of time, the disc will never be as strong so you need to build up the muscles to compensate and help take the pressure off the discs and excercise better posture and techniques for lifting etc. But this is all cyclical, other times you just need to try and relax and let the muscles relax when they’re all tensed up and try and bring inflammation down through rest, listen to your body and you’ll probably develop a strange sort of stretching regime! Good luck with it, there are many other sufferers out there than you know which gives comfort that you’re not alone

My op was over 20 years ago, one week in hospital on a neuro ward, then three months off work. I had been crippled with lower back pain and sciatica for over two years, luckily I had a very good surgeon and hospital.
Yes lifestyle had to change a lot, I cannot sit for very long, and standing for long period. Although moving around is great.
One of the most important things is being to talk about it.

I'm a truck mechanic by trade. Did about 10 years road side and now I'm a damageless recovery specialist, I also do refurbishment of classic and import trucks between calls. It's all heavy work with stupid long hours up and about. Luckily I have a good amount of muscle tone from the job but the Dr even said the fact I'm a bit top heavy with muscle doesn't help. It's not been a week yet but this is the longest I've been on the sick in 20 years. Just need to learn to be patient.

The call we all dread has just come in. RTA involving HGV, car and motorcycle. Possible fatalities. Here's hoping last part is wrong. Going to be a long night, waiting for the ok to head to the scene.

No Jim Im a HGV mechanic and damage less recovery specialist. Spent over 15 hours on scene as it was one of our own abnormal loads involved. Lots of in vehicle footage to be reviewed but it appears an impatient car driver has forced passed the rear escort vehicle and colided head on with the motorcycle. The car has then been crushed by the first row of trailer axles. 1 fatality and 2 critical. Don't want to add too much detail as next of kin or still being traced.

Before I go crazy looking at servo specs any recommendations for servos for Tamiya 3 speed gearbox and steering duties on 1/14 trucks ? Always hate servo shopping, just put power HD 20kg in most stuff now. Lol.

Grand hauler and flat trailer ordered. Multi function unit will have to wait until next month. Slowly collect the other parts I need ready for the long dark nights.
-
To buy a Tamiya Grand hauler for my winter project or not. Love the look of them. Anyone on here built one ?

Finger is hovering @johninderby need to decide on a trailer as well. Just landed a job refurbishing a Leyland Octopus so looks like funds are sorted.
-
Just finished a 15 hour shift and nursing a bad back so not the greatest of birthdays but the curry is ordered, stayed off the pain meds so a few drinks are in order and I've got 3 days off. Donnington Saturday for the truck racing and a bash day Sunday if my back holds out. Got to look on the bright side.
-
After a manic day getting our daughter ready for prom and getting her to the venue the other side of Derby I can finally sit down with my well earned chippy tea and wait for the 1am phone call to go pick her up. Bash day tomorrow I think.
-
Well I must say my FTX Carnage has shocked me. It's had nothing but abuse for 3 gallons and ran like a dream until today. Lost drive to the rear, thought the diff had blown. Proved me wrong, loose grub screw. For a budget RC these things are bomb proof.
-
Oh dear. Slight slip on my lunch break today. Ordered two new aquarium's. She will kill me.
-
What a day. Spent many late nights keeping a customers truck for paint and the last 3 days flatting and polishing only for him to walk in and say I don't like the colour, can you do it candy red and white like you suggested. Close to 200 hours wasted.
-
Imagine the shock of being asked if I wanted to buy my own RC's before I realised they had been nicked !

Mental, thick as @@$# theives if they had half a brain then you'd be gutted. Ide set a cam up in the window just incase they come as a pack never know with kids of today. Criminals are fearless because it doesn't matter what crime they commit they will be protected and kept safe. Even if their victims didn't get that luxury. Even parents can't punish them the way they need it.
I saw a 6yr boy punching F out of his mum the other day in tesco 's I couldn't believe it. My mum would have laid me out lol.

Been out on the Dogs Unite sponsored walk today. Result is very muddy pups, sore knee but most importantly £80 raised for Guide Dogs.

Not the best of days, surgery on the hand is going to be fairly major. Been signed unfit for work, being self employed thats really not good.
-
Been to see the hand specialist, refered to the surgical team now. Thanks to Snap on poor quality looks like Im going under the knife.

Just got hold of ftx carnage bnib for £50. Gota love gumtree. Lol.
