FTX Outback Fury

Is this bit misleading, "3-gear high torque transmission"? That could lead to someone expecting 3 selectable gears..
That skid plate is tiny.....

It's nice that they paid attention to people's wish for a 540 motor and some of the other subtle changes are nice. 

 

Sadly though you can't create a aggressive jeep grill and bolt it on to a toy like looking body. 

 

I do like that they have gone for a wheelbase that allows for better 3rd party body application but will that be enough to sell it. 

 

For the price I would rather have a new Carisma Coyote (albeit that is a shorter WB) or a second hand SCX10

Now before the “ftx” fan club get ready to hang me, I just want to express one point.

 

for the same money (£1 cheaper) you can have this, which in my opinion the Best (dare I say) entry level scale truck which is in fact closer to axial rigs quality wise but without the cost.

i agree it’s always good to take on board people’s thoughts and ideas for improvements good on them for that 

 

 

Hmm.  Admittedly underneath it's very different but this will surely be a hard sell up to a beginner compared to the Kanyon'ero.  Not sure what FTX's plan seems to be bar throw as many products you can at the issue and see what sticks.

 

Coyote still seems the way to go for a starter rig, though I note Carisma are pushing improved shocks that like FTX seem to be a part bin special.

The Outback V1 was pretty good. The Outback V2 was even better. Pretty much perfect, considering the price point.

 

This one should be better yet, what with it being larger and fitted with a proper 540... but that body shell is entirely hideous, so that'll need replaced! That adds to the already-a-bit-too-high-for-an-FTX price point, which, as Gaz mentioned, is more expensive than the Coyote. £220 is asking too much.

 

Personally, I think FTX should stick with considerably sub-£200 cars; there's little point in them trying to push more towards the "premium" market. A larger, 540-powered Outback, priced around £160-£170 would be ideal.

Almost certain the price is already £200, and I'd expect this to hit £180 on promotion / box shifting exercise.

 

If your able to look at this through the eyes of a 10 yr old..... Not so hideous.

Had another look and the overall package looks quite good for sub £200.
There's a picture with a winch in it, presumably that's not included in stock...
Battery at the back always baffles me but with the cms I'm thinking might be a tight squeeze getting that battery up front and shifting electronics about to accommodate.
Like the inclusion of the wipers, wing mirrors and snorkel though.
Is all that scale stuff up to going to come with it as well do we know?
I know nothing about their choice of ESC, are they any good? Lipo 3s capable? Drag brake?
Not expensive to change out for the 1080 but good to know in advance...

That fake winch is in fact part of the scale bits that come from China for a fiver as oppose to probably double that in a fastrax bag.

 

may I ask why a rear mounted battery baffles you? I’ve run a battery at the rear for years on my scx10 and still performs as good as front mounted batteries over the same obstacles, but easy enough to swap around with a little bit of trial and error.

 

the text above the last pic states that the scale items are available separately from their sister company fastrax.

 

the 1040 esc isn’t a bad unit but it’s knocking on a bit now, I had a (axial) rebadged version when it came with the dodge power wagon and that one failed but was covered under warranty. If I remember rightly it is 2-3s capable too.

 

at the risk of being hung, I still maintain, why buy this or the kanyonero thing when the coyote rtr or kit is miles ahead of this for similar money. Unless the yellow jeep appeals to you more than the pick-up shell (sorry, haven’t a clue on what model it’s based on) I just can’t find a decent enough reason to pick this over the coyote.

Carisma are a bit of a dark horse, they make/made some excellent Rc, the Porsche 959 for instance.

Battery placement is purely weight distribution for me, it's a heavy piece and I like to climb so want as much weight up front as I can get which is a common goal. Appreciate it won't make difference if you're not climbing too much though!

Well the quality of it feels much more than it costs, using “some” bits from the axial scx10 makes spare parts availability broader and to be honest. During competition at this last recon g6 they proved to be very capable in during the whole competition.

 

ask some of the owners of them on here, they will tell you the exact same.

 

as of this moment I don’t have one in my collection but I can 100% guarantee that their will be one (be new year now though) coming my way. 

As the happy owner of both a Carnage and a Hooligan, and the unhappy owner of a First Gen Surge POS, I can honestly say you're safe Gaz. There's no way I'm gonna drop 220sheets on an RTR Scaler with a 40a speedo and 20t can. I don't know what FTX are playing at.

Could this be in part due to the fact that ftx is a distributor brand....which in all essence...just means a bunch of off the shelf Chinese components compiled into the shape of an rc.... Whereas charisma are actively involved in the grass roots crawler/scale/G6 scene...so they knew what they needed from the rc before they designed and built it....

 

First hand real world user experience counts for a lot IMO... Followed the story of these guys (carisma) taking on the recon event stateside and I have to say I'm mighty impressed with their efforts...

Only just read your post properly...I basically just repeated what you said ??

It seems to do most of what everyone wanted the V3 outback to do- better motor, fixes the insta-strip diffs and has a proper servo. Shame it didn't get the randomly fantastic Fastrax Swampers that the RGT Bowler (another Outback variant) comes with as stock. But does £200 push it too far?

 

Spare parts/interchangability for the Outback's never been a problem btw, SCX10 axles (and compatibles) need only a little fannying about with links to fit. Mine has xtraspeed portals in

closer to Axial quality, i would say maybe better than Axial quality if the FS clone is anything to go by

Just bringing up an older thread, the Fury has had a remodel and is now the Fury 2.0, better body better turning circle still same 40amp esc but altogether a much better model than before, its good that they listen and improve yes price has risen a tad but £215 is only like inflation related
