Got some right pony and trap last night.

Thought i had the nifty fifty at infinity, works out i was just that little bit of.

my widefield astro attempt failed, jupiter is a large rugby ball.

and my stars have double replicated themselves.

cant work out why am getting double and triple star streaks.

i think its the rubbish camlink tripod, more so the mounting / pan tilt plate.

noticed a drop in altitude when i was using the tripod to run some panoramics

ALSO need a new lens, i just cant work with these stupid glasses without range/focus info bar.

anyone able to advise on cheap lenses that have infinity/ratio/etc etc markings and windows.

i cant find any new cheap lenses that have the infinity /focus windows, ideas please ?

18-70 or something alike ( i have 90-300) dont mind if its a slow lens i can track via motors

Thanks guy

i see a couple on LCE , but they not local.

its very puzzling why canon and likes removed the focus windows, something so handy

being removed sounds/is daft .

found the problem with mount. the base plate does not sit flush,

when panning the cameras weight makes the mount plate drop a few mm

with the motor head running. No problem when no motor head is used

but the camera sits off horizontal. not an easy fix would need a total rebuild + R&D.

heres the plan, grab a cheap as chips 18-50/5 ( will do for 28mm widefields )

meanwhile save pennys for a nice sigma or something to go with the 50mm  and 90/300

a M42 screw adapter so i can also use the kumoru 105mm prime i have.

found untolds of FD canon fit lens units with focus windows/markings. and i found some sigma lenses

also have a infinity dot marked on the body housing, and a secondary dot on the focal ring.

still being annoyed at the stupid crop factor, my 300 at max is a 480mm telezoom

my 50mm prime is an 80mm prime  ( not ideal when your wanting wide field shoots of a dark sky.)

Was messing around again with lighting, this time a slightly harder object - bottle of liquid. :)

i took this last night in a rush type thing, way 2AM in the morning, very very cold ( well was for me lol)

ISO800, 20s exposure @F2.2 with a nifty fifty canon 50mm II

works out cloud went over mid frame but look close and you can see a star cluster

nearly mid center frame. focus is out as usual with the 50mm jobbie, but its very close

this is a portrait shot with a 1:1 crop

Luckily I have a 24-105L, 70-300 Tamron, and 50mm II along with a couple very old EF lenses. Although I do now have a hankering for a nice ultra wide EF, maybe the 17-40L or even the 16-35L. :)

That's fair. I miss the extra reach of the crop sensor, though. Certainly notice it at race events. I bought a 1.4x MkIII. Still haven't used it :P

Well always wanted to have a go at car togging, so I went to the West Yorkshire Ford Meet @ Old Brickworks Leeds with Keenan (Ant), safe to say I need a little more practice, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Hi guys need your advice on a lense I bought. I Bought a 55 - 250 mm IS lense 2nd hand off eBay.

Don't really know much about photography I'm fairly new to it, the lense I received today makes a sound when I press the shutter half way down and doesn't stop, Like a faint crackling sound as if a the motor is on??

Second thing I noticed was when I looked from the view finder, the information display disappears sometimes,

Please see attached video regards to the noise and is there anything you could advise me on, is it faulty or is that normal?

Thanks

I'm guessing that this is your first IS lens? When in IS mode there is a little motor inside the lens that is moving a bunch of optics around to compensate for any movement of the lens. It's completely normal. Unless of course it still makes such a noise when you turn IS off (should be a switch next to the AF/MF switch). You should always turn IS off when you have the camera mounted on a tripod or other solid mount.

As for the display turning off, again normal. The info display usually only stays on for a few seconds after you half press the shutter button.

hehe i cheated.

take a 90-300mm lens with a 58mm filter ring fit.

now bust one of those very cheap IR/UV protector lenses.

remove glass, and pop out retainer ring.

visit http://astrojargon.net/MaskGenerator.aspx

create and save a bahtinov mask ( for a 50mm lens )

focal length = 50mm

apeture = around 27-52 (go 52 )

edge thickness = 5mm

horizontal slot = 5

angle slot = 5

cut out the mask leaving the black sections

retro fit it into the 58mm filter ring. and fit to camera.

focus up star ( a bright one ) 20 second exposure, view image and look at the \ I /  pattern produced when zoomed in.

a patter like this \I / means your just inside focus

a pattern like this \ I/ your just outside focus.

a pattern that looks like this \I/ is perfect focus.

remove filter ring and start hammering out your pin sharp star sky scapes.

gotta say i am now able to get some sharper stars now.

bang on perfect diffraction spikes

Proisbly the IS motor?

Also exposure info disappearing is normal, it's a camera setting, you just depress the shutter button to get it back.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks for Getting back to me guys, I googled what the noise was and got Some ideas what it was but wasn't 100% that's why I asked you guys.

Also please can you advise me about batteries? Original 1200mAh batteries cost almost

Cheers Harry, glad I treat myself it to be honest. Most expensive piece of glass I've bought and I told the missus I would use it. Currently been the only lens on the end of my camera since I got it. I'm even using it as a walk around and macro (ish) lens, gets a little heavy after a while though lol.

On another note, new body time, have my trusty 40D at the mo but its edging on close to 80k actuations getting close to that dreaded 100k mark. So looking at upgrading, would like to know what's out there for around

Hi all, thought id stop by and say hello, i should hopefully be getting back into RC soon, ive been into astro photography more then anything lately, not really doing much daytime togging at all. not much money either for much else as astro has been consuming pretty much everything lol, im one part away from being guide capable which i will be next weekend, so ill be able to expose for around 10-20min subs without getting star trails from next week which im soo excited about, thats where the fun starts for me :D

here is a few pics of my astro journey lately
