ISMardKB
Hi all. I’m going to attempt to convert my old Hyper 8, from AliExpress I’ve ordered a cheap motor bracket and a SURPASS HOBBY KK Waterproof Combo 4076 2000KV Brushless Motor w/ 150A Brushless ESC for 1/8 RC. Couple of questions- Will my old spektrum DX3e radio work ok with this? I won’t be wanting to break any speed records, it’ll be just for mucking about in back garden so should I buy 3S or 4S lipo? Pinion size? I’ve ordered 11,13 and 16 to test out. What’s the recommendation for this considering it’s only a 2000kV motor? TIA
lorrylemming
Your DX3e will work fine so no problems there. Those Surpass ESCs have a pretty poor reputation reliability wise so I'd go the smallest pinion and see how it copes, battery wise it depends how big your garden is, I can drive my 4S buggy on my 40ft*20ft lawn but its not very easy. locky
Start with 13T pinion, assuming your spur is 46T, and regularly check motor and esc temps. 16T pinion should be about right on 4S. Running on grass with constant stop/start will tend to pt more strain on esc.
ISMardKB
I assume a 4S lipo would put more strain on the esc than a 3S? Assuming running at similar speeds?
locky
If your esc is 'fragile' then start 3s but you may find the speed underwhelming, as the 2000Kv motor is best at 4s.
locky
You may need to add thicker diff fluid to centre diff as brushless produces alot more torque than nitro. It should help transfer power to rear wheels and reduce front tyre ballooning.
ISMardKB
Think I might get the 3S lipo to start with. Cheaper too, I don’t want to spend too much then regret it. Thanks locky I’ll get some diff fluids and change them.
ISMardKB
How do I check temp of motor? Do I need one of them IR pointy gun things?

Just checked, my lawn is 30ft*20ft so sounds like 3S is the way forward. At least for my first lipo.
ISMardKB
If I’m using the 150A esc with motor combo as above with a 3S lipo, can I use any “C” rating lipo or are there rules that say I should use say “30C” or “60C” etc?
lorrylemming
Higher C rating is always better so buy the best you can afford. China hobby line seem quite popular on here for affordable lipos.
