First mod will be adding some weight to the wheels as these come with bead locks. Anyone else have one? tomr Posted August 2, 2021 Author Share Posted August 2, 2021 (edited) The O-rings I’d ordered turned up this morning, the plan was to glue an o-ring to the bottom of the shock body (seen a guy do it on YouTube) which would be enough to seal the shock shaft and allowing the shock to be filled with oil. Long story short it didn’t work and was a complete waste of time 🤯 So I decided to have another look at the Carisma oil filled shocks I’d bought a couple of weeks earlier. After a bit of modifying and using a couple of parts from the stock shocks I managed to get them to fit and the best bit the actually work great . No more horrible bouncy, springing about from the stock friction shocks 😁 Trying to fill the tiny shocks was possibly the hardest part,I’ve gone with 60wt oil for now 👍 Will try and make a little test Vid shortly. Popular Post tomr Posted August 4, 2021 Author Popular Post Share Posted August 4, 2021 (edited) @chewbacca I’ll try my best to describe what I did mate but I’m not the best at this sort of stuff 👍 The oil filled shocks are the Carisma MSA-1E upgrade set https://www.modelsport.co.uk/product/carisma-scale-adventure-msa-1e-gen-2-1-24-1976-ford-f-150-1331808/tuneups-1834 Obviously I’ve fitted these to the Patriot but you could do this to the Arizona, Katakana, Land Cruiser and I’m pretty sure the FTX 1/18 rigs are the same just without the hard body. First problem was the alloy spring holder on the Carisma shocks, the fact it was alloy meant it would never pop onto the stock ball fitting (which is also a bolt ) plus the size difference between them . I couldn’t use any other bolts to fit the shocks as the same bolt holds the shock and a link in place. The only way to do it was to use the spring cup from the stock shocks but the piston on the alloy shocks is much thinner so couldn’t be threaded on .I ended up having to glue the cup on. Industrial super glue 💪sets in seconds. I wanted to use the stock springs as they’re described as “tuned” harder fronts, softer rears or vice versa, plus the Carisma springs where to thin to fit the stock spring cup . So now the next problem was the stock spring diameter was too big for the alloy shocks 😂and would slide straight over the adjustment collar. To get around this I used an o-ring just the right size to fit snug on the base of the collar. Then it’s just a case of fitting them using the stock top shock bolt and another smaller o-ring and tiny washer to take out the play between the shock mount and the bolt head .
