Resurrecting a Mud Blaster into a Monster Beetle!

Since the early 90’s I have been in possession of a well enjoyed Tamiya Mud Blaster, purchased second hand from a fellow apprentice. Fast forward to just before Christmas and I rediscovered the box the it had been laying dormant in for more than a few years! So I did some research and downloaded a pdf of build instructions.

The battery was shot, and so was the radio gear - I never figured out if it was TX or RX, but I bough a cheap £30 set up to test with. You know what - it roared into life! Even the gearbox didn't sound too crunchy!

Mind you the well meaning Loctite I had used many years previously meant ordering a new chassis as it had eaten various parts... A set of bearings and an ESC, a thorough disassembly and reassembly and the ‘Blaster scrubbed up well.  It steered stopped and handled terribly - just like when it was new  😂

Over Christmas  I ordered up some repro decals (note the totally different colours)  and a Lexan Kamtec body shell, (both not bad but neither Tamiya original sharp). Note to all those like myself, pick your first body shell in a squarer shape next time - those reverse angle curves  are a nightmare to cut out for a beginner! Most of the stickers went in straight, and did a fine job of covering up the paintwork mistakes caused by too thicker coats being applied! Colour is Tamiya PS63 Bright Gun Metal over a white backing. I think it works out well.

Nice one . are you going to run this again ? . There is a mod for the gearbox to stop the alu sides bowing under pressure and causing gear failure - a common fault with a lot of running . There are 3D printed braces ( clamps ) available that bolt onto the gearbox with no mods . I have some on my Frog runner and I have some ready for my MB restoration . You can see the braces here on my Frog between the bumper brackets

Thanks for the compliments, I have read about the mod, but in all honesty with a standard 30 year old 540 and a retirement on display I guess I will take the gearbox gamble - I have bought something current (a TT02) to accidentally bash guilt free!
