Help with new buy

Hi I bought FTX Outlaw 6 weeks back. I managed to use the car for about 40-50min as it’s constantly faulty. I already had receiver, controller and servo replaced. I just ordered brushless engine which is due to arrive next week. When it works it’s a fantastic toy ( bought for my son for Xmas) but I can’t not longer look at  my son’s disappointed face ( I am also gutted).
I am thinking about returning the car back to the shop and getting something slightly better. Is FTX prone to faults or is it genuinely issue with all RC cars?

Any suggestion in regards to the potential replacement? Ideally I wouldn’t like to spend more than £400-450.

Thanks for you help.

That’s a huge budget. I did the outlaw route for my son and it was pretty good for a year or so. They do break parts quite easily in my opinion.
Ended up with loads of expensive ally parts.
I feel your pain with their faces when it stops running.

My by now has an arrma granite 3s blx and apart from their esc which is meant to be good but is hit and miss. Their buggies/ cars are really tough. We jump ours and his does huge back flips and lands on every part but it wheels and carries on.
Bodies take a hammering but we reinforced the rear sections as they will crack.
You may get leaky shocks doing jumps its but small beer really. You have to expect that.
I have their short coarse truck which is great too.
Granite is my lads new favourite and we have a few different cars.
You’re all in without batteries for around 270.
There is a huge difference in build and all out toughness with arrma compared to the Outlaw.
Not saying they are perfect but they are decent. Check em out.

If yours has been nothing but trouble, see if they’ll replace or swap for something you’ll want to keep.

Personally I'd say return it as sounds like a right lemon.

Your budget for a replacement is decent and personally I'd be looking at an Arrma RTR vehicle. Plenty of choices depending on what sort of thing you're hoping to do with it, ...take a look here:  https://www.modelsport.co.uk/arrma-rc-electric-models/rc-car-manufacturers/1274/9900/990010

Thank you for your help lads. I am after something similar to FTX. I like the speed when needed and off-road capability.
I looked at Arrma already. Granite looks like a bargain ( on offer around £268)  The other option is craton 6s but it’s a bit pricey and not sure if it’s not OTT.

I purchase the FTX from  the online shop. They have been very helpful and are always trying to resolve every issue promptly but I’m just getting really annoyed now.

Really

you can’t go wrong with the arrma

they do a few 3cell and 4 cell vehicles from buggies, bashers, monster trucks and short course

the short course is meant to be really tough

the arrma  senton 3s

but they are going to break, I don’t have an ftx so couldnt help here but it’s always worth finding out what little spares it’s worth having on hand like pins for this and screws for that...a spare set of arms and so on, does sound like you’ve had a rough time with that car though

if you have a particular style of car you’re after ask and I’m sure someone will let you know what’s best to buy

example

arrma typhoon...fast buggy

senton....bashing and dirt tracks

kraton...jumping and bashing  and so on

The 6S machines are silly fast, how good does he drive?

We are both new to it so I wouldn’t say great. As I said it before I think  6s is way too much for what we need but at the same time I don’t want to regret it again.

Absolutely disappointed so far.  The shop I bought it form keep sending spares and tell me how to fix it but even they run out of idea at some stage and had to contact FTX customer service. Despite all the videos provided to the customer care they  couldn’t tell what is wrong with the car. They asked me to replace part by part. When I finally thought this is now sorted as I managed to play for under an hour after 6 weeks ( during which reverse stopped working) today it wouldn’t work at all.
I am not sure if I am unlucky or whether FTX is just unreliable.

I have the 6S Senton, awesome machine. The 3S is far cheaper and still very fast, but will take a few hits.

I prefer the closed wheel design of SC trucks when it comes to bashing, shorter arms and the body covering the wheels makes the cars that little bit tougher.

If he really wants open wheel MT style, then maybe a 3S Kraton or Outcast?

Be warned, the latest versions of Arrma are coming with horrible radio gear!

This is the options I was considering

Senton 6s

Granite 3s BLX

Keaton 6s

It’s a hard choice and being new to RC world it’s even harder to choose.  I know I can comfortably spend £1000 but I now there is no point ( I might get bored after few months or so)

I said my budget is £400-450 but happy to spend less and a Happy to spend a bit more. It’s about finding the sweet spot and find something that is quick, can handle jumps  ( don’t need them to fly 20 yards), can crawl up the sandy hills and it’s capable of doing some drifts on the sand. FTX when working was hitting all the spots apart from the speed hence why I ordered a new engine which I due to arrive tomorrow.  Question is do I upgrade the car and hope that it won’t fail again or do I send all back add extra £200 and have something much more reliable.

I can’t comment about FTX durability as I never had the chance  to really test  it du le to it’s constant electrical failures.

Your lad and you won’t need a 6s anything tbh.
We have 3s arrma cars as said and they hit 50 mph in just a few seconds. And I mean FEW.
Trust me 50 is plenty and spending loads to go 60 instead just isn’t needed.
I’d save some cash.
Short course trucks are great. I have one. Only down side is bashing in English conditions means the ground is usually damp and muddy. As it has enclosed wheels it’s instantly filled with gravel and debris and cakes everything with muck.
Most Buggies, monster trucks and truggies have tight fitting bodies and are clean when you remove the lid after bashing.

I agree I defo don’t need 6s. I actually mentioned this couple if times as for me this is OTT.

The  reason why I like 6s is that they seems to be 1/8 rather than 1/10.
Big RC look cool imho but I’m sure there are cons to it.

I am beginning to think that Kraton 4s is the one. My final question is regarding battery.
I have almost brand new 2S Overlander 7.4 55C 7600mah. Do I just buy one big 4s for the Kraton or just add another big 2S and run on two?

Is there a reason why the Hyper VS never gets recommended, We know the electrics are good, And at £325 it looks much better value than the Typhon 3S.

Just depends on what people use or know about I guess.

I've never owned or used a VS so couldn't or wouldn't recommend one although I did have a VTE for a short period but sold that on as I didn't like the design of the C hubs & wanted to buy an Arrma Limitless instead. Hobao as a manufacturer though I'd say are good.

@Rafa Regarding the batteries it will depend on what can fit in the battery tray of whatever RC you end up buying. You can by all means run two 2S batteries to give you your 4S  cell count but with a high capacity mAh battery like the one you have two of them maybe a tight squeeze in the battery tray. Varies from vehicle to vehicle though.

FYI one thing to consider though about the 6S rigs is that you don't have to run it on 6S from the get go, ...in fact you can run it on 4S for starters and then if you feel like you want some more speed then go to 6S. Personally that's what I'd do. 👍

Fair comment regarding 4s. I like the size of 6s a seems big and I know it has slightly better build. If we were going to talk double amount of money the yeah no point but it’s “only” £100 and I can run it on 4s.

Need to deal with my current FTX though.

OK, I though I will give you an update. I sent my faulty FTX back to the shop.  They will replace all electrical parts. I have also purchased ABSIMA 10 Turn Sport System 3 to converted FTX to brashness.  I am expecting to received the car back on Monday.  I was initially prepared to spend £400-500 on a new car  (if I was going to return FTX and and request a full refund) so I decided I will still keep this budget and I went to buy Arrma Big Rock. FTX with the conversion was £185 and Big Rock £290.  FTX will be used by my son (it was his xmas present) and Arrma will be mine. I was very close to buy 6S just because I wanted something bigger but decided against it just in case I will get bored at some stage. I was also looking at other such kraton 4s (most of forums said its too expensive for what you get) Bison V3, DHK Maxiums etc. My main criteria for the purchase was size, UK stock only and cost of extras such batteries. I had a 5 min run (only arrived last night)with the Big Rock and its insane quick for me.  I would definitely like 1/5 scale at some point but for me (I know many will disagree) 3s in terms of performance is more than enough.
