Hmmm considering it is metal then i would weld it.

Isn't it possible to weld some plate onto the sides, front and back to strengthen it.

I aint to sure about araldite, i haven't used it very much but i aint sure whether it would bond to rusty metal or not.

Failing that, get a new one (or save moeny and buy my lipo :P:lol: )

Fitted the fuel tank and welded up the battery box yesterday.

Starting fitting lower suspension today, the rear was a pig to do and iv only down one side. I had to grind off 3 or the 4 nuts and everything was quite rusty and refusing to move without a little help from mr hammer.

Made a start on the front by removing the springs and A-panels. I found one of the springs had sheared, the A-panel are pretty rusty and the drainage hole was blocked so il give these a quick go over with some paint.

The shorter spring is the lowered one, shown just to compare height.

And you know when you've worked hard when your hand looks like this...lol

Done alot over the past 2 weeks:

> Fitted Fuel tank

> Welded up the battery box to make it stronger

> Lowered the suspension to chrome bumper height

> Rebuilt basically all of the heater box (was rusty everywhere and the foam insulater had decomposed to nothingness)

> Replaced heaterbox hoses

> Got the heater controls actually working

> Replaced Fulcrum pin bush (only thing thing that was suggested for next MOT)

Plus a lot of other minor jobs

Welded up Battery box

Lowering blocks on the rear. U-bolts were rusted solided and needed some help from mr hammer.

imag0008sp9.th.jpg

Bad pic of the new front spring, gave the spring pan and A-arm a good coat of paint too.

imag0009qv5.th.jpg

New lowered height (handles much better now, although I still think the dampers could be stiffer)

Il have to get some pics of the old bush on the fulcrum pin and the old bump stop on rear suspension. There unbelivable bad.

After all the work I went to start it yesterday and take it for a run. Something is up with the engine now as it doesnt like going faster then 50mph and theres next to no acceleration past 30mph, I rebuilt the distributer (replaced points and condensor) with my dads friend today but it still has problems :(

Sorry the pics are a bit boring, should be buying some cosmetic stuff in the next month as well as fitting the alloys (if I have enough money for new tyres :o)

Dads mate is pretty sharp with MG's, were going through the process of elimination to find the problem. He doesnt think its the carbs (he had a good poke at them :P), next thing were doing is setting the timing properly...then replacing the coil (IIRC), his also told me his got an old webber 40 he can give me (apparently it makes the car go like stink :whistling: and makes it more fuel economical as well)

I don't really like the chrome bumpers tbh imo they look American and they are very expensive, I plan on a smoothing off the edges of the car using the ST front Valance and Sebring rear Valance (and getting rid of the rb's totally). Im hoping I can get them cheap this weekend and retro show. Hopefully il have these all fitted and painted by the mini show :)

Forgot to mention I bought this, tad expensive at £35 posted but it should do the job and I might get it re-chromed if I can find somewhere cheap enough. Alot cheaper then buying one new for £85 and its actually made by MG.

Thanks for the kind comments and encouragement everyone :)

was that a joke? lol

i think you'll probably find it will be less economical as it will suck half your fuel tank through in one cycle :P

althought it depends what condition your engine is in etc.

what carbs you got on atm? are they hif 38's? or 44's? or are they HS4's?

does it splutter and misfire past 50mph? or is it just not picking up?

No, it should be more econmical because of the way it works with 2 butterflys (1 open for pootling about town, both open when you floor it). Il also be running 1 if you thought Id be running 2?

Standard SU's on the car atm, I beleive their HS4's from a quick look on egay.

Its not picking up past 50mph with the odd splutter. Like I said will be doing the timing and changing the coil, any other suggestions apart from carb tuning? Took the fuel filter out and replaced it with just pipe and there doesnt seem to be an air look in the fuel tank...only other thing I can think of is the fuel pump is getting weak, but then it probably wouldnt rev in neutral?

Are you sure there isn't just a little bit of crap in 1 of the jets in the carbs?

It could make all the difference, if it is really only working on 2 cylinders (so 2 cylinders doing all the work while the other 2 attempt to) rather than all 4.

Air filter clean? A belt slipping? Or even something stuck in one of 'jets' in the fuel pump, not allowing as much fuel through.

Carbs are fine (well set up like [CENSORED] but should work), air filters are clean and pretty new. Fan belt wouldnt make a difference if it was slipping or not.

Valves could be set wrong as it looks like 2 cylinders might be doing nothing. Fuel tank lid looks isnt venting the tank but ive run it without this and still problems.

Coil was changed today, made about a 2% improvement. Tried my mates dizzy cap and it ran worse.

Im running out of ideas, the fuel pump could be a fault but I doubt it as it seems to be pumping ok. I doubt i've lost compression in the cylinders as theres nothing coming out the back end to suggest they are. Could well be down to valve clearance's or something to do with the valves.

Iv got a compression tester to try on all the cylinders and a remote fuel tank left on my list of things to try.

Only got tomorrow to sort it (and fit at least the passenger bucket seat) before its going to a specialist, hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg :(

The MG couldnt even make it to the garage under its own steam, sounded like November the 5th with the amount of backfire going on.

Had to have it towed to the garage, luckily the guy at the garage had a decent diesel van and strong tow rope, and someone was kind enough to let them use their house phone :)

Well I the car got fixed by the expert, apperently the new points and condenser id bought werent working right. The guy also tidied up the wiring for me and was very reasonable with what he charged. When I dropped the car off I was lucky enough to get a lift back in a mint MGB whose owner was a pilot :) All this was back in July though.

Bucket seats got put in when I got the car back. They look and feel sweet B) Anyone want to donate a Mountney steering wheel and some vinyl back seats to finish off the interior :D

dscn4224ve1.th.jpg

Blown the headgasket now though :( loss of compression in cylinder 3 and a very strange grey oil/water mix in the sump (and this is with an oil change only last weekend). Only pressure is still good though, and it gets off the mark ok.

dscn4226mg3.th.jpg

Iv ordered a new headgasket, but I may be getting something better to fix this problem (watch this space ;) )

Bonnet paintwork has somehow become abmismal so im on the lookout for an alloy one on ebay.

the Grey oil/ water mix in the sump will be from the head gasket blowing as it has allowed water into a place normal only oil is in because the water jacket in the head gasket no longer seals properly.

this will also cause the engine to overheat aswell as oil/water mix will not lubricate engine well and it will not displace heat very well either, looks likes you'll be needing some more oil now aswell :(

Have fun doing a head gasket change its alot of work :D
