Looking for Project ideas.....Hyper 7 based

Not sure what to do next when I finish messing with the Stampede I am refreshing.

 

I have:

 

1 complete Hyper 7 with nitro engine but no shell.

half another Hyper 7 ... front bulkhead and steering, rear bulkhead, centre diff, chassis, not much else

A few other bits and pieces of Hyper.

 

Now...I could just slap together a near complete roller, sell it and put a shell on the good one...or I could do something with it.

 

So far I have had a few ideas, but nothing really getting the juices flowing. I considered a 6-wheel truck....but to have 4 rear wheels close enough, I would either need the worlds shortest driveshaft or make a coupler to join the diffs.

I also considered a 6 wheeler with 4 front wheels...but that just has the same issue at the front. For both designs...I do not know what shell I could make fit or how I could finish it off.

 

What else could I do with all this that would be interesting.....original....and fun? Oh...and I have no spare cash to spend.

It's a thought...but I don't have a spare ESC. I have a spare 2000KV 4074 can, which would do the job, but no ESC to go with it. Whilst I was pleased to see a Quicrun 150A can be had for around £50, that's around £50 more than I wanted to spend......plus a motor mount.

 

That's a project for another day

Yeah...did a rally build. Still have the shell and wheels. Novelty wore off. You have to stiffen up the suspension compared to a buggy to stop grounding out. It was a simple buggy chassis with modded body mounts and very stiff rear shocks. Made some rough and ready bumpers and ragged it around for a bit. It looked better than it drove, and got used as much with onroad wheels as off.

 

If I did one again, I would be looking to really narrow the car down, rather than do the stock buggy rolling chassis with the shell looking overly wide. Will have to check what driveshafts I have, and if I can make it narrow enough. The Kamtec Escort is a 305mm wheelbase and 240mm across the arches.

 

I would also need to adapt some 1/10 scale 12mm hexes potentially....as 1/8 buggy wheels are a bit large. Kamtec to an Escort MK1 and a Ford Anglia shell in 1/8 scale. Proper rear wheel drive only, swing axle......... hmm...it's going on the list :)

Nope. I had to import a shell from Italy to fit a buggy width/wheelbase and it's not a natural proportion for a road car. The Lancia one I have looked ok, but it has wide wheel arches.

 

And the narrowest I can make a buggy with driveshafts I can locate is 270mm. That's using the short 78mm Savage driveshaft. Custom arms I can make....but not dogbones

Had another idea....which might be fun.

 

Take a standard nitro motor...or maybe 2.... and place them at the front end of a flat plate chassis. Between them...put a centre diff which has been locked up. Have the motors facing forward. Use a straight pipe and boat type exhaust facing to the rear. Use a single intake /air filter box with a fake supercharger intake. I used one on my Truckzilla twin engine build.

Kyosho called it a 'GigaCrusher' ....and stopped making it years ago. They used a 3 speed transmission and reverse....but that's not really needed.

Now....back to what I want to build.

 

Run a driveshaft backwards towards the centre of the truck, and there locate an another locked centre diff. OK...I hear you say...that's not going to work. You have only got one output from the centre diff, and no space for a front diff housing. Yeah. I know. I am not making a 2WD truck either.

 

Flip the chassis over. There is a slot to give clearance for the centre diffs driven gear. That pokes through. If you pau ANOTHER diff upside down under the chassis on a trimmed down centre support....and you have gears that mesh. Your under diff would. of course, need to be live to work as a diff.

 

So what would we have here.....a centre diff sticking out in the breeze under the flat chassis, with all the other drive stuff on top, rear exhausts, front engine and air intake. So....if we put two side pieces on to protect the diff housing......we could hang some suspension arms off them. I would just need to work out how to turn a Hyper 7 diff housing into a solid axle arm with mounting points...and I could end up with a cool monster truck. Hmm......going to need to sell some more stuck to cover the build cost though. Going to need some sheet Delrin...and either some 23mm hexes for my existing truck tyres or a set of 4 17mm ones.

Hmmm....I understand where your going...basically one diff sat in normal position (centre, on top) then another diff directly underneath that diff ....?

 

Few things I can thing of...

 

What would be the purpose of second diff? Would it be meshing with the diff above it? And would it be solely so you could power it with another motor?

 

As two engines onto one solitary centre diff would be better??

I want to put engines at the front...with the carb to the front and the exhaust to the rear. Then you can cut away the bonnet and expose engine and intake etc.

 

I then need to bring the drive back to a central point....and if I use a pair of locked up centre diffs for this purpose, with a driveshaft in between, I can keep gearing constant, use standard components, and bring the drive back to exactly where I want it. It would be above the flat deck chassis, and it would also only have one free drivecup...as I would be driving it from the front.

 

The diff underneath would mesh with the one above....and transfer drive below the flat deck where I can take it fore and aft to the axles.

 

Driving one central diff would be simpler....but that forces me to put the engines in a conventional layout at the rear facing forward....and again forcing the exhausts to point forward with curved manifolds. These are all things I do not want. I already have a twin engined truck like that.

 

Problem is, for now anyway, is that I don;t have the parts I need to do this. Or the money to buy them right now.

What I was tempted with was finding a Savage 3 speed box & making a mount for it for a bl motor.

With the easy pull off of 1st gear then the gradual gear changes through the run I reckon you could hit a ton easy using a 4074 without heat problems. Well I'd hope to.
