Some old bird....

Recommended Posts

This was bought locally for a mere £9!

Built from plans from rcme magazine in 1983!!

Been hung on my lads ceiling for ages, recently swapped this 'ceiling display plane' for an old nitro seagull he liked the look of that's been sitting around my workshop for a while...

So basically I'm attempting to get this old bird in the air again!

Few model notes-

Balso frame construction,

The wingspan is V.large!

Came with a master airscrew folding prop and master airscrew 7.2v 3550 motor, there's a gearbox in it too.

No ESC in this one, i do have spare esc's and receivers for planes but they're 8 channel so i don't have a matching transmitter at the moment for that setup.

I've gutted an old RC glider , of a smaller scale , (wife treed it) so i can use its ESC, receiver and two channel transmitter .

I'm using a turnigy 60-120c 2s batt for power.

Still need to string up the servo, refit some rubber bands and I'm away....

P.s ive not flown in a long time, but this bird hasn't flown in 20 years!

Watch this space as it may disintegrate mid - air, from age or pilot error!

No flight today, spent most the day faffing around with the serpents ball diff....

So i opted for evening BBQ on branscombe beach

I have however come back and strung in the rear wires for tail rudder, rewired the ESC connections, and sourced some more rubber bands to complete the 4 i need.

Final bench (or table in this case) testing completed

So she's now flight ready!

It'll probably rain tomorrow:D, forecast says dry and bright so fingers crossed...

Im nervous of crashing as it looks so fragile.

Did you take it out today? Looks well made.

Well two words, complete and fail....Come to mind..

Just didn't get enough lift to be fair, I'm surprised it didn't fly....

Maybe my car orientated lipo was simply to heavy!

Will get a vid up asap..

I only got about 30 seconds worth of footage over 3 failed hand launches....

Then a harsh landing wiped out the gearbox....

I'm in two minds wether to retire her for good and get another old bird I've been eying up out....

Or strip the modern ESC and motor/gearbox from the other old 'easy street' plane and try again with this one...

I'll get a pic up of other plane asap

Shame, it looked like it was gonna be good fun. So annoying when you persevere only to break something critical.

Is the airframe still in good condition? If it was me, I'd lose the gearbox altogether and set it up with a bl motor and proper esc. Work out what thrust is going to be needed then just go direct motor>prop. Won't cost much to experiment with a motor and plane esc.

Airframe is all good..

Yeah I'll get my numbers worked out later....Need to weigh the glider first then I'll calc thrust from there.

I've got another motor and ESC at the ready but I'll need a tx/Rx combo...Will search eBay later

Work out the numbers? I just meant what's the biggest motor that will fit! :whistling:
