stuart81
Hello, I have a GX-21. Trying to remove the flywheel, do I need a special tool? Thanks
Nitroholic
You can get a special tool .... which is basically a small sized 3 leg puller.... but you can also gently lever it off using a couple of flat bladed screwdrivers. Just make sure you apply pressure evenly and work your way around with the 2 screwdrivers opposite each other. If you are careless though, you can damage the crankcase
gavin28
what i do is remove the nut, hold flywheel around its circumference with a large pair of pliers and a short sharp tap with hammer on the pliers - hitting towards end of crank, pops straight off. papasmurf
I just tap the flywheel from behind and keep turning it so It slowly works its way off Rob

brit_bulldog
Flywheel Puller is safest option, Its the right tool for the job. I have seen so many engines damaged by people using hammers and screwdrivers etc! http://www.jemodels.com/index.php?app=gbu0&ns=prodshow&ref=TOOL-DY107030 lots of makes out there! Anthoop
As said there are plenty of ways to get the flywheel off but a puller is the safe option. No need to spend a lot of money on a specialist RC tool...this will do the job fine- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-Tools-AK419-SALE-Alternator-Battery-Terminal-Puller-Tool-64mm-Spread-/161228351655?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2589f568a7

bugster
Mine has always come off with a tap from a screwdriver handle. Have you tried heating it up with hairdryer, might make it easier to remove.
Netroxen
Use a heat gun or hair-dryer, heat it up so it's warm, not hot and then get a cloth and the blunt end of a screwdriver. Tap the screwdriver handle around the flywheel, make sure you keep the crank-shaft firmly in your grip. It should pop of with a little moral encouragement.
