FTX Vantage/Carnage owners Thread

Recommended Posts

Sits nice and low, looks good.

Thanks chewbacca for motor advice. needed 2 asap, ended up ordering 540 saturn 20t and 540 firebolt 15t. got firebolt as a near like for 550 ftx motor, which i would have got if in stock.both our stock motors gave up within weeks of each other, thought first one fried but when second one went i stripped it open and realized it wasnt an overheat problem, it was the motor fan drawing debris from the track into the motor, in said debris lies old rusty tiny chips and grains of metalic mayhem which have damaged everything in the can....have now made mods to shroud the(new) motor vents.I put high temp synthetic bearing grease(like a paste and used on hgv) in the diffs a while back to stiffen them up, it worked a treat, more like a LTD slip, but had to make adjustments to track and camber on front to sharpen up steering. They both stick to the ground like muck magnets when cornering. Will see how 2 motors compare and if 20t helps resolve traction problem.......maybe i am expecting too much of these cars,we give them a serious bashing in all weathers over rough terrain and big jumps and have to make regular repairs but still, for the money i think they are good, you get what you pay for but then again plastic is only plastic and it all breaks the same!

It seems limited to the body shells you can get to fit well and have been looking around and think i have found two projects, one for each carnage. one is a mk1 escort shell to fit like a SCT and extend bumpers on chassis and other is to rat rod a rolls royce hearse (g digger)....may turn out pants, will let you know.

reason for prior question, motor and esc getting very hot running new 15t 540 firebolt using 17t pinoin, my knowledge is minimum, but i know if only esc is hot to gear down, i would guess if only motor hot to gear up,and take a way out punt that both hot is down to too few turns on motor for esc???? the old 550 motor ran hot with the esc but not like this.the same motor and identical esc are in 2wd e firestorm

the new 20t is spot on with the 17t pinion....got my traction..... seems smoother...can get the power down now....good top end too....stays a lot cooler than 550...gonna try pushing it by lowering pinion size in stages down to 13( already had to file out motor mount to fit 13t with stock can) in fact i may even try  upping the teeth just for fun.

so far have learned that on a carnage the ftx550 can is a good can,far far better than the 54015t firebolt but the 540 saturn 20t is better for the surface we bash on..

if i cant get firebolt something like i will have to file it under science fiction and get another saturn.

its getting time for batteries and have been running 3300 nimh and have contemplated lipos, we are using probe wp esc which are 2s compatable, any suggestions for batteries and good charger..

I believe it's hot motor, cool lipo and esc = under geared.

Cool motor, hot esc and lipo = over geared

hi guys, nice to meet you all, im lee, i have recently purchased a ftx vantage, and have modded a few things, ie 9t motor esc combo, carbon towers ect, my question to you guys is, is there a metal spur that will fit the vantage slipper system. as the plastic just shreads on the standard, meshing was an issue on the first few but i think im willing to take the risk and try a metal one. thanks in advance for any replys

Ta hyper d..lj22 if you get a good pinion and mesh it up well( many tips in guide for this) the plastic will be fantastic.... i had probs but it was soft alloy stock pinions wearing and chewing the teeth up.

Sup guys, Got my carnage second hand a few weeks ago. After my last bash i've suddenly lost drive completely, didn't get any crazy hits to it or anything. Steering works fine however, tried new batteries etc for TX/RX and still no luck.

Could the ESC be knackered? It's using the non-waterproof  Etronix Pulse 3ch.

Are connections clean on esc?clean up and retry..if no worky ..then ,swap esc  and steering plugs from the tx around. trigger should operate steering, wheel should operate motor. if trigger operates steering at least u know handset is ok.etc...etc. now unless your esc has visual signal of operation(led) you wont know if fault is with the esc or motor. easy method is to test with esc motor output with a  multi meter.

This may interest some peope in regards to possible spur gears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHiYFhIRX8U. Quandum vandal is the same as an ftx vantage.

can u point me to a good metal spur.0.6 or 48dp, pitch and between mid40's to mid 70's tooth, doesnt matter, willing to get pinions to match and compensate. being able to use various size spurs AND pinions will really open up the gearing variants.

Took it for a bash on my new masher pro line tyres and 3s tonight. Nothing major broken but the centre driveshaft has slipped another pin and this time has started to gouge into my motor casing. Luckily I've caught it before it's gone right through but I'm seriously contemplating alternatives to the centra shaft from ftx with pins that seem to come loose for a pastime

yep

Hot motor = under geared

Hot esc = over geared

Hot motor, esc, and lipos = way over geared

All warm = a happy set up.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just melted my slipper in my Carnage, (see my other post in the Electrical Section)....

Just wondering if anybody has thought of locking the slipper?

I don't really jump my rcs and even with the slipper tightened up fully, it still managed to slip and has melted where the pads meet the spur gear.

I was thinking of drilling straight through the two aluminium plates and the spur and putting M3 bolts through with nylon nuts to keep them tight.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Yep, well don't bother, it doesn't work!

Just thought I would try it on my old worn slipper/spur and the bolts catch on the motor mount.

Oh well, least I got a NIB set to put in.

Worth a go I guess.

Cheers

Evening.

I currently have standard gearing and use a 3500kv brushless motor n esc. My worry is that it seems too over geared. It struggles to get anywhere neer top speed on short grass, and the motor gets very hot (not sure on exact temps atm).

My question is, what pinions will fit the FTX Vantage to lower the final drive? I feel it would drive a lot better and stop the massive cogging when setting off.
