mikeald
Just to elaborate on my above post. I have been trying to wrap my head around gearing. According to me the vantage has a tyre circumference of around 10.64", and the FDR is 8.3:1 Now, from what I have read, generally speaking these figures should be as 'close' as possible. However, there is clearly a big gap between the two!!! THis suggests to me that the stock 23t pinion is pushing the motor hard for top speed. Wouldnt it make more sense to have a 19/20t pinion installed? Thus changing the FDR to 10:1 Can someone please clarify??? Tap MS up for a selection of RW Pinions pinions, start from 17t and work up. Also get that temp gun, give the buggy a good run on each pinion and check the temps of the can, ESC and LiPo. mikeald
Will do... Also, any idea why my Vantage shipped with a 2950 Kv motor, when the tech spec states that it ships with a 3650Kv? Anybody else had this? Cheers

mikeald
Here is the response from Wheelspin models: "Thanks for pointing that out for us. The website has not being updated recently and does not reflect the new updated version of the FTX we sell" How informative!!!!

mikeald
Another question: On the Vantage there is a big square hole beneath the motor. What exactly is this for? As I cant see how it aids cooling, as heat rises? I am thinking of covering the hole, to reduce sand damage, has anybody else done this? Its so the motor fits the brushed vantage uses a 550 size can and the brushless a 540, its so you can accommodate the 550 size can

mikeald
hmmm, either way, I see no reason not to fit a plate over this huge gap, to reduce sand intake.... Agreed???? Edited May 7, 2015 by mikeald

mikeald
Made some progress today.... All bearings in rear end now rubber sealed, I will do the front end next week. I used bearing retaining compound on the bearings in the gearbox. Hopefully that will stop some of the crap getting in. I then screwed the gearbox back down onto a thin bed of silicone. I then had a go at making some sort of pinion/spur protector out of 2mm acrylic. I also sealed up that massive hole beneath the motor.. Just waiting on the ally spur gear from the States now... Here's some pics: http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33338-bearing-seal/ http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33339-gears/ http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33333-/ http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33335-/ http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33336-/ http://www.msuk-forum.co.uk/gallery/image/33337-/ Edited May 8, 2015 by mikeald

mikeald
Hi Dan, That is just a piece of 1mm rubber gasket that I cut to size and siliconed in. I deliberately did not do a more permanent fix. However, providing motor temps etc remain ok with the gasket in place, then I will possibly remove it, and bolt a piece of ally plate there instead......
