Anybody running a Vader XB

So Santa got me one of these for Christmas and I'm looking forward to running it when it gets a bit drier. I've read the stock motor is too underpowered for it so been thinking about going the 1717 route and running 2x6s 5000mah in parallel however they are huge and would need the trays sides chopping. I have a fair few 2s lipos so might look into a 4s setup, seen on the red cat forum there's quite a few people running leopard motors and my previous experience with these has been good just need to decide on suitable KV and find one with a 5mmm shaft.

Hi Stretch,

I have to say the 1717 is an amazing motor. It throws my S5 around with ease and the ESC is coping just fine. I'm currently using a 140 Amp MGM ESC. The S5 weighs approximately 8.5 kgs fully loaded, but the combo is yet to break a sweat, summer may prove different, time will tell. How much does a Vader weigh?

As for voltage, I'm happy sticking to 4s, this gives a top speed of 40 mph and Good aacceleration.

I've also had it on VERY good authority that the HW 150 Amp ESC handles the 1717 without any issues.

What motor does it come with?

Hi mate, I am leaning towards the 1717 from the XO-1 as I know it has the 5mm shaft and will also run on the stock HobbyWing esc. Apparently the motor can be made to fit the stock mount with a bit of fettling which save me the added cost of an aftermarket mount http://7075rc.flyingcart.com/index.php?p=detail&pid=5&cat_id= http://www.kershawdesigns.com/MotorMounts-Rampage.html which the leopards would need.

A couple of people have run the 1717 on stock gearing 10/48 on 6s with good results.

The spur size isn't usually that much of an issue as a couple of teeth on a spur don't make the same amount of difference as a couple of teeth on a pinion. What I mean by that is, I'm running 13/52 and she flies on that, with no heat issues as of yet.

I asked about motors on the Redcat Racing forum saying I was looking for about 35mph from it, I was told I should be able to get around that with stock electrics on 6s. Think i'll have to take it out and GPS it to confirm.

oh it is rated for 6s

ESC allows you to fit twin 7.4 or 11.1 volt LiPo batteries for up to 22.2 volts of power!

i've heard the motor is under powered but the hobbywing esc is apparently good for 6s. I'll give it a go and if it dies i'll put in a warranty claim. Might just order the 1717 anyway. Did you mate kill the motor/esc? Maybe it's like the firestorm flux that although it's rated for 3s this setup can easily smoke esc's.

This guy ran his on 6s

think the 1717 is the better option though

That video shows that Maverick, like a lot of RTR manufacturers, has produced a car that only does on 6s, what it should be capable of on 4s. I know this from experience and wish Stretch all the best with it. I've always liked the looks and general concept of the Vader, in all its guises. The model has been around for a few years now, under a few names, or certainly some very similar models.

Stretch, you had better strap a camera to this one!

Thanks chaps i'm off to JRC to get a 1717, Tug I don't think i'll be able to wait for the dry weather so might just have to bite the bullet and take it down the playing fields tomorrow, i'll film it as well.

Yeah the vader is made in china under license of HPI. Redcat XBe, Himoto and Maverick are the same except the color of body and rx/tx.

You could always keep it on-Road? Just a thought.

Nip Nip

Glad to hear you are enjoying your Vader. I've had a lot of fun with mine but only got the most out of it when moving to an 8S setup and a 56xx motor.

My feeling on the 1717 is that if you stick with stock wheels (rather than Baja sized ones) and gear low you'll get the most out of the combo.

Also the Black 1717 for the XO-1 has about 5% extra power on the original Neu 1717 and a faster spinning rotor. It will probably like the extra rpms and lower gearing.

Took it and ran it on 5s, GPS'd at 28.2mph. No onboard footage i'm afraid tug as my hobbyking wing camera lived up to it's name and flew off and couldn't be found.

LVC was set to 2.8v so changed to 3.4v. Is the hobbyking 150a esc the one that lvc's too early? Motor cogs quite badly and the radio gear isn't all that so definitely going for the 1717 and putting my own RX in for my multi model TX.

28 ain't so bad, 2 teeth on the pinion would pump that up.

Shame about the camera, expensive?

Yeah, mine are set to 3 volts for a 3.4 volt cut-off. Always best to experiment, start at 3.4 as you have, you'll soon know if it's cutting early.

Keep us posted bud!

thinking 11t and 6s might get me in the 35mph zone if it does means I can hold off shelling out for the 1717.

It was this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__17200__hd_wing_camera_1280x720p_30fps_5mp_cmos.html the SD card was worth more than the camera lol

the front arms and chassis area needed very little cleaning just a few leaves, the rear arms were right mess though and clogged with mud, the same with the inside of the rear wheels. I've just ordered some rear mud guards for it.
