Maybe it's just the insulation that is a bit thicker on the Vapextechs?

I'm not sure if awg includes the insulation.

The AWG rating is the size of the conductor. So your right, you can have 2 cables with the same AWG , but one might look fatter than the other.

Just had a gander round a few places, and 14AWG is commonplace for electrical installations in the US at 15A (at 120V that's a max of 1800W). Scale that down to our little world, and you're looking at 150-300A max so I'm sure you'll be fine. ;)
