Shock Absorber Oil Advice

Simon Hester

Recommended Posts

Hi

I need to replace some oil in the shocks of my RC car. I've been through the manual and on the website but can't find any info that tells me the rating of oil I need is it the cSt or the WT rating.

The car is a 1/10th brushless buggy and I generally use it for just bashing around sometimes it is on a car-park or road and sometimes on a field with some jumps.

Thanks

Simon

Hard to specify anything without knowing how stiff the springs are etc, or even what kind of buggy it is (4wd, 2wd etc) - as a rule of thumb, i'd go with 400cst in the front, and 350cst in the rear- then go from there.

I had a bit of a struggle with shock oil not long since and found this article.

It's long but near the end it gives a rough guide and as @m4inbrainsays above, gives a good starting place to work out what works for you and your motor.

Will take a look at the article.

Is there anyway to work put how stiff the springs are.

Or would it just be better to replace the shocks out with new ones.

The car is a bsd racing model from 10 year ago.

4wd buggy at the time know as a compression brushless or flux assault.

I'm afraid you have gone over my pay grade now mate. I was setting up a near 30 year old 2wd buggy, I used what was there. Cleaned it up and started wherever that article suggested for a 2wd, 1/10 buggy.

The existing springs still sprung so tried the suggested oil (was actually right first time), and went from there. Did tweak the spring tension a bit to get better return but otherwise worked fine.

Embrace the challenge, try getting the old ones to where you want them.
